Hi from Australia, just trying to fill in some time so I thought I would try and fill you guy's from "over there" on what goes on in my little part of the world "over here".
The Brittany as a breed in Australian could be considered un-common, with most people asking if mine is a ESS???? and one even thinking she was a young GSP? It seems to be only people with prior exposure actually know of the breed.
'Annie" (she is around 15 months old) is my first experience with the Brittany breed, I researched long and hard and looked at various breeds (Weimeraner/GSP/Lab/ESS/etc.) and settled on the Brittany.
One of the main reasons was the enthusiasm of the breeders I spoke to and club members. They appeared genuinely interested in keeping the breeding lines sound and I got the impression from some that if you didn't intend to take it out in the field you would have struggled to get a pup.
I couldn't be happier with my choice, I'm a novice trainer and she is coming along nicely, loves to hunt and just gets better all the time.
Conditions over here aren't all that conducive to bird/duck work, a few drought years in a row and duck seasons cancelled on a regular basis means opportunity to hunt birds are limited. We can hunt ducks over dams on crop paddocks with a permit but it's not what one would call challenging shooting, "meat" shooting a friend has called it. Another option for ducks is shooting over the rice fields, but to take a dog there with the snake risk some would consider foolhardy.
Field options for my Brittany has mainly been foxes to date and I am preparing her for deer (Fallow & Sambar) the next Australian autumn where I hope she can utilise her many talents to the full. We have been hiding deer ears and hoofs in the back yard for her and she gets on the scent very quickly, so it all looks good for next season.
It's a pity the breed doesn't have a bit more exposure in Oz, as they currently seem to be a well kept secret (well at least in my part of the world)?

Waldo, as far as I am concerned, I am very happy for the lack of publicity of the breed...until there is segregation of the two types i.e EB - AB with the endorsement and implementation of kennel clubs globally and a stop to the indiscriminate admixture of the two types...then long may the poor publicity reign...why, because, puppy farmers will continue to do what they do best... _________________ "...amitie, respect mutuel et amour..."
