Just learnt that NSW will be permitted a season for duck, quail and pigeon.  The Victorian shooters and most definitely their Breton are hoping that the snipe season will again be a happening thing.

I live here and haven't heard that one yet?
Let's hope it's true.
Cheers,

Waldo, I understand they have allowed a duck season on the rice...silly question, but do they have a paddy field type growing like in Asian rice production?

This is for the irrigation areas. They found that more rare bird species were being killed by farmers protecting their crops than by informed hunters with their dogs. No irrigation areas near me, but Waldo may be near the Riverina.

Thank you, Gundoglover...yes, I feel very strongly about this subject actually...many do not understand that true hunters are conservationists who understand probably better than anyone that sustainable management of any species will secure it...!!  So called hunters who go out blasting and being total galloots are not in this category at all.

I know what you mean, Victoria. I remember seeing a cow in a field with "cow" painted on its side when I was travelling through the outback and so asked at the local pub about this. I was told that the recreational shooters  come through town, get drunk, go spotlighting for roos or pigs and end up shooting the cattle. You wouldn't get a gundog hunter doing that, the dog would know better! Laughing

Hi Victoria, in NSW we can hunt ducks (although the licence actually say's "harm") over crop paddocks under a crop mitigation scheme. There is a number of conditions such as: the landholder needs a permit which will indicate how many and what breed of duck can be removed, the hunter needs a permit and obviously permission from the landholder, returns need to be submitted by both the hunter and landholder, failure to return will see no further permits granted. The ducks can only be hunted over a crop paddock or a dam in a crop paddock, NO the paddock or dam on the paddock next door with no crop is a no go zone, the birds must be shot over the crop, good thing ducks don't fly otherwise you could inadvertantly shoot a duck that wasn't eating the crop!! Rolling Eyes
We used to do a bit of this BD (before dog) and got quite good at shooting ducks that where outside the dam banks so they were easier to pick up. The rice growing areas are only about 2 hours from home and I went a couple of times in the past (30 + odd years ago), pretty hard work, it's usually hot, mozzies are absolutely huge and if it does show any signs of rain you had to leave quick smart otherwise you could be there for weeks and I probably should mention the snakes (not real good for the dogs).
Duck opening/seasons used to be huge here, absolutely amazing and those ones during my early teenage years with my grandfather, father and brother hold very fond memories, special times indeed. I can recall my father saying at one time when we where out that these years that we were experiencing will be the best ones as it will just get worse from here on, he was right. I would love my son to experience a duck opening as I did but it just wont happen, but we have had good times chasing the deer the last couple of years (with Annie along) so I would like to think that he will look back on these years as special.
Cheers,
Waldo

An illustration of gross lack of respect, in my view...unbelievable!!

Thank you for your reply, Waldo...I can see how the mosquitoes would be a real bother!!!   And it would seem that your lovely bureaucrats need to check their dictionaries...!!
