When I leave Gaston at home while I am at work when I get home our greeting is not just a pat of the head for him and a glance for me; no we have to go through this long sort of cuddle thing; if we dont he thinks I do not love him anymore. He does not bark except when he is in his kennel and needs out in the morning.
Just goes to show what a clever fella he is!
We have noticed the pups, despite only being a few weeks old, have already learnt to recognise the back door opening = food is coming.Their kennel is directly opposite the door and the laundry is where the food is prepared. They will be inside the kennel fast asleep, but put your hand on the door handle and BINGO, they all come tumbling out and line up in a row facing the door! I tried sneaking around as quietly as possible but it didnt work! Even tried a plastic dish, and they knew the minute the food was placed in it!
Sophie, has already learnt that her toys are in HER basket and even Spice is politely told to remove herself if she puts a paw in the wrong place! Toddy the cat has been watching with aloof amusement then had a sneaky look himself.Sophie was on to him in a flash and threatened to nip his tail as he set sail for the top of the sofa.
I can see we are going to have lots of fun and games with this lot! _________________ Home of the canine "Spice Girls" - Spice, Sophie & Kip - and Lou the sheepdog.

Sophie sounds as if she has got it all worked out already!! Their hearing must be acute even at that tender age! I still cannot work out when they learn about Brittany time?! But I remind myself that if we wanted a robot type dog we would not have Bretons. _________________ "...amitie, respect mutuel et amour..."
In my/our experience - limited to GSP's Border Collies and Brittany's - the Brits are right up there with the Border collie in the intelligence stakes.
I found the GSP babies to be a trifle slower at learning basics - but they were number one when it comes to being diabolically naughty, wrecking everything in sight and fighting with each other. The Border and Brittany pups are more inclined to think a bit more and nut things out. GSP pups were just rip, roar, tear and break everything without stopping to think.
No need to guess who we prefer?!! _________________ Home of the canine "Spice Girls" - Spice, Sophie & Kip - and Lou the sheepdog.

I was speaking to a friend yesterday who has a litter of Irish Red & Whites - you should just SEE the damage the last litter caused. I presonally would have had them all shot not shot over
I had a Cocker that chewed through a plaster wall once. We caught her at it and she didn't stop. Her Brittany house mate was sitting over in a corner looking so guilty you'd have thought it was him.
Today, Sophie got a lesson on "having respect for one's cat" from our cat "Pepper".
Sophie was outside pottering around and I noticed her stop, quietly sit down and cock her head to one side.I said nothing and just watched. She was gazing towards some bushes and I could just make out our grey mother cat "Pepper" in the shadows and ,oh dear, she was in a compromising position (if you get what I mean)!
Sophie started to quietly to move towards the cat,who was completing her toilet.Pepper had her back to the pup and seemed unaware of imminent catastrophe.
The cat turned, saw the pup and sat down.No hiss, no growl just a mean, gleaming green eyes glare at the pup. Sophie froze in her tracks and sat down as well. The two stared at each other for quite a few seconds, then it all erupted.
Pepper chased the pup without a sound, towards the house. The pup, stubby tail flat to her backside, let out a blood cudling yell, put her ears back and shot towards the house with the cat a fraction off her backside!
Sophie cannoned into my legs and Pepper braked real hard and slid to a halt just short of me,sat down and proceeded to wash her paw.
I could swear the cat was laughing and thinking "that showed the little so-and-so". Sophie sat at my feet and literally poked her tongue out at the cat! Nearly human or what!! _________________ Home of the canine "Spice Girls" - Spice, Sophie & Kip - and Lou the sheepdog.

Right, so you tell the Breton what to do, he doesnt, so you neither say a word or look at him; well, within ten minutes he comes bearing gifts - a slobby ball and a mutilated teddy bear. Later that night, put in kennel for night still worried about being naughty; in the morning pats and welcome...well he went berserk, around the garden at 100 mph; he was so pleased that it was all back to normal; stop whistle training much better now! What amazing little dogs...!! _________________ "...amitie, respect mutuel et amour..."
Being unashamedly Francophilic, I just had to have a copy of Rick Stein's French Odyssey CD; it is lovely; well, there are two tracks on it which just seem to 'do' something for Gaston...he becomes very bouncy and joyous and always seems to come up with some hilarious antic whilst 'his' tracks are playing. Must be the beat, bass or something. _________________ "...amitie, respect mutuel et amour..."
Have been viewing the four dvds Bird Dogs Forever featuring most gundog breeds including EBs and ABs hunting upland game in many states of the US...wow, the country is SO SO vaste...living in islands as we do I do not think we can really comprehend the vastness of the land.
Watching the chapter on a guy shooting over his Wire...when he blew his whistle, Gaston, who had been asleep on the couch, suddenly woke up and when the rooster ringneck the Wire had flushed hooted Gaston was running around the lounge when he suddenly saw the door mantle above the front door featuring a pheasant (kennel name Faisan) ...poor boy, it was so cruel!!!!
