The view I am giving is taken from the French way...And since it is a French native, here goes...The trousers are cut off fairly short, no long trailing ones. Usually cut with thinning scissors- My job is groomer-
The hair of the ears can be stripped and the hair behind the ears thinned out too.
The Black usually carry more coat. I thin out the neck hair too. and in between the toes. Never should they be shaved American way.
Regarding the moving, if the dog is obedient he/ she should pay attention. They are normaly free standing.
I find some of the dogs which are worked can find the whole thing a bore and the look in their eyes" Oh, no, not again,, I thought we were off shooting".
As I Judge too, like some on this Forum, I myself don't expect our breed to behave like a robot. They have to behave but they are quite exuberant and some even have a bounce or two!
Over to the others now...
Any tips for a novice on how to deal with trimming feet and ears? _________________ My goal in life is to be as good a person as my dog already thinks I am.
learnt something new, trousers cut off fairly short, most working spaniels have long trousers .Is there a reason for this? _________________ Be safe not sorry
Christine...They are not a Spaniel
Remember the French do the opposite to everything the British do...
The trousers are cut short to emphasise the cobbiness of the dog and the squareness of its body. As the tail is docked very short, you trim short below the tail and thin out the trousers.
To trim the ears, you can on an Orange: take a stripping knife and pull from top to bottom the fluffy hairs. Thin behind the ear excess hair with thinnning scissors. Neck too if too hairy. On Black dogs, the hair can be more abundant, you can thin it again with good thinning scissors. Round up along the ear.
In between the toes, lift the hairy bits, cut with normal scissors.
Or even better...ask Gill to show you, she is a groomer too( sorry Gill )
Or even the wrong end of the dog _________________ Jan

Pull [n or v] An equal and opposite force perpetrated on both ends of a lead that results in the inevitable tripping and falling of the human involved!!
two of us having spent only minutes short of an hour picking cleavers from Topaz's ears, chest (looked like a green breastplate), armpits, in fact any feathery bit. They only took about ten minutes to get in there . He will soon be getting a 'hunting trim' no trousers, little feather, reduced chest wig. Could masqurade as an AB
In the meantime the suggestion I have had is a ball tipped grooming brush - but is there another or easier way? No tangle spray? stripping comb? for instance or even a 'non stick teflon spray' before the event?
