This is what Pierre Willems says - in France it works on a 20 letters basis (no K Q W X Y Z, as they are scarce in the french laguage), and yes, this year for registered french dog, it is compulsory in France that the pedigree name begins with a "C".
It is very practical as when you have to compare two dogs you know immediately their age and, of course a performing "B" (2 yrs old) deserves a bit more attention than a good "T" (6 yrs old), which is supposed to be already at the top of its qualities.
And, of course, you may use any pet name you wish for domestic use.
At my home, LAVANDE is PANPAN, SARRIETTE is POOPIE, ULINE is LA SOURIS (the mouse) , etc..

My April litter last year were Aberdon B's, my planned litter thsi year will be Aberdon C's and next year D's.
Fosscott Alaine over Aberdon is Allez(he goes like stink), Aberdon Sgurr Mhairi is Freckles(she has LOADs of them), Yarak Viola to Aberdon is Belle(name speaks for itself - she is BEAUTIFUL)
Have fun everyone!

Freddy the welshie came to me with a pet name of Red, my youngest nephew can't say R's clearly Red became Fred.
Brice came about cos I wanted a Scottish origin boys name and it apparently means FAST which for a deerhound off coursing lines seemed apt. Sadly his definition of fast is related on being first to the sofa.
Mugi - who knows?????
Kennel Names.
I have an affix although I don't breed as a birthday pressie from my parents to link my lads together. I designed it from the KC affixes of the pup I am waiting for and the dogs I have or rather had at the time.
Callmillard - CALL comes from Callisae (future pup), MILL from Millbone (Freddy) and ARD from Ardneish (Brice).
Mind you I now sooooo prefer not having to write out entry forms by hand as they are quite long.
Millbone Ginger Kool at Callmillard and Ardneish Eccentric at Callmillard(and I chose his name aptly I think) and soon Boisels Minstrel at Callmillard. Then just the wait to see who els joins the brood. _________________ Sue, Chase and the non-Brittany boys - Brice & Piper. Pets first and foremost.
Never forgetting Mugi and Freddy

My boy is officially named Gaston after the great Gaston Pouchin of the CEB! take that...although he does get Teddy (cos when he arrived he looked like a little teddy bear which we try to avoid because he has such a good name), sweetheart, darling, plonker, ratfeatures, gorgeous, bon chien, you b..........d (that one is from Bryan after Gaston stole a piece of steak off the barbeque - not his fault, if chef mad enough to leave said meat unsupervised!!). I have to tell you this little story...attending the Pointer and Setter club's training day...first off was a demonstration of how each of our dogs responded to the stop whistle; well you all know about me, G and stop whistle, anyway, darling orange and white mucks up; yes, ok, mucks up big time and one of the organisers yells at me to get my dog...so I call Gaston - himself is a tad reluctant to respond and is back on the lead...the organiser comes up to me and said 'well, if I had a name like that, I wouldnt want to come to you either'...peasant, plonker....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ "...amitie, respect mutuel et amour..."
As you know, we have Spice and Sophie :
Spice was christened fairly early in the piece with the nickname "pocket rocket" by gundog club members who had never seen a Brittany before, let alone one who did everything at 60 miles an hour.
Shortly afterwards "Fidget the midget" emerged - based upon Spice's habit of fidgeting whilest in the group lineup's at shows.A ring steward noticed my vain effort to keep her under control and his comment was overheard by a few friends - and it stuck. Often she is called "Spicey".
Sophie, being one of eight pups in the litter was often covered in nameless stuff during games with her brothers and sisters; she didnt care where or when a game was always on, and often she was covered in food or "other" things which meant I was forever cleaning her. Hence "pooey-puppy" evolved into "puppy poos" and lord knows why, but it has remained her pet call!!
Of course, when they are in trouble, both of ours get a strongly worded call starting with B.....!!
For naming litters, over the years we have chosen a theme of some sort to distinguish one litter from another. Our kennel name "Holmbrook" is very English sounding so we thought that mixing it with german/scottish or French words would sound wrong, so we opted for the theme idea.
For example, our last GSP litter were named after American Indidan
tribes - Panamint, Sioux,Apache etc. One of the Border Collie litters were named after the placenames I could remember from my childhood;
Erdington,Bromwich,Shardend and Yardley. The Brittany litters have been harder - 1st litter was singular names like Gaston, Pasquale,Francois and Madeline and the second litter have double-bangers eg Claude Marrac, Deniel Andrev,Loeiza Melle and Aimee Rozenn, Sophie Neveu (named after the leading lady in "the Da Vinci Code").
Luckily, I have a book of Celtic names from the Border Collie days and these are also appropriate for the Breton. _________________ Home of the canine "Spice Girls" - Spice, Sophie & Kip - and Lou the sheepdog.
I may be absent in mind and body but always addicted to man's best friend.
A dog doesn't care how much you know until he knows how much you care.
I knew a man who bred Burmese cats and named one of them Bloodyp Esther [you have to say it quick] best part about it was the GCCF allowed her to be registered and he showed her to her title. I cannot remember his prefix. There are a lot of names that I have thought of for pups but I am not sure they would be allowed. Naughty Knickers for one who kept taking the underwear from the bedroom.

Well...the Ghilldog can open the washing machine, drawers are sooooo much easier!! Added to which men have a habit of dropping their dirty washing on the floor [at least the one living here does] Used to get a bit disconcerting turning round and spotting a little face, almost hidden by a pair of unmentionables, peering round the door. Now we have to make sure every thing is hung up or she brings it to us. Bless her.
