Today I took Brice to the vet nurse for a nail trim (shame that I can 'do' Chase but can't do a hound with white nails Embarassed ) and as always he popped on the scales.

I was horrified to see he has lost 5 kgs in 4 months and now is a totally unacceptable 41kg while not seeming ill.

He has always been hard to feed as he can't be bothered eating but I thought I had cracked it by feeding Performance Challenge as he got a lot of nutrition in an acceptable form (for him) - he also has a couple of meals of either lamb breast or chick wings each week.

I am going to try to add in an extra meal of fatty lamb mince or tripe but feed too much and he goes off his food - he is also intolerant of rice and grains so I am limited (why Challenge has suited) but if anyone has any tips for weight gain that don't involve additional bulk and bearing in mind he is very bloat prone I would be grateful for thoughts.

Sue - is Brice an entire male?  Soufee was an absolute nightmare regarding feeding and weight until this time last year when she had to have an emergency hysterectomy.  Now she looks for her food and I am having to be careful she does not put mon weight.  Her problems were obviously related to hormones.  I assume males can be affected in a similar way.

If not, then there are various supplements you can add to food to improve appetite etc. which might help.

He is entire Gay - he is very high risk anaesthetic wise sadly as he has a cardiac condition so will only be 'done' if he needs another life threatening op.

Thing is he has been kept with entire in season bitches in the past and has never lost this amount of weight while still seeming to eat a reasonable (although not huge) amount.

I think I need to look at appetite stimulants so any ideas welcome.

Can you add Complan to a dog's food?  It's a general tonic and appetite enhancer for humans, loads of calories in it.

Sue, have a look at Dorwest Herbs website.  They do a malted kelp appetite stimulant and loads of other good stuff too.  I know how worrying it is having a picky eater, Ru has driven us to distraction over the years but we have cracked it with raw lambs hearts and have also got used to him just not eating much for a few days.  His weight isn't quite so up and down (more down than up usually) these days.

Sorry no ideas, but I hope you can come up with an answer for the big boy, Sue.
