Today I have spent 7 hours moving a dog of 18 months old who will be heading to his fourth home.

He was a massive weim who will weigh more or less the same as my Brice I guess but poor lad has moved from the northwest to near the New Forest. He has travelled for a similar time to me today and we did it with minimal changes as while it was done through breed rescue the collector, myself and final home are all friends so I certainly went further than I would do normally.

Why do some dogs have so much turmoil? Merlin has done no harm to anyone and is just a victim of human priorities.

The point of my post on a Brittany forum?

I think breeders should be proud of themselves that rescue/welfare is not a huge issue (although I know for a fact as I work for a springer rescue too that some bretons come up as spaniel cross in generic rescue centres) but while 'we' are a fairly minority breed this will hopefully remain the same. But we need to be aware of the fact that dogs are viewed as disposable accesories by many and become too popular and a bigger problem may follow.

As you can probably tell I am fed up today ........... this month I have done 2 homechecks (thankfully some people offer homes) and two transport runs plus I am fostering although that is slightly different as it is an informal arrangement with a friend.

Saying that, after my health scare last year I will not condemn without knowing circumstances but my dogs are my pets for life and if I ever had to let them go I would move heaven and earth to ensure their happiness.

I understand exactly what you are saying, Sue. For that very reason I always insist that my pups come back to me if there is ANY reason the new owners can't keep them. I include it in the bill of sale, and hammer it into their heads at every opportunity. If more breeders did this there might not be the same problem.

It has also happened that some Brittanys have had 4 homes in a short space of time. Usually for running off( well they go hunting don't they?)
It is heart breaking, I know, I have come across this too.
Don't be despondant, think of how lucky the dogs you transport are Wink

Indeed it is difficult to rehome a 10 year old and when people asked for a " rescue", 7 years was the oldest they were prepared to take on. That is why Sue has my full respect and am very pleased she has fallen for the Brittany. ( on top of all the imaginative ways she cooks up to deal with various issues Wink

Taking on an elderly dog is not everyone's cup of tea. Crying or Very sad

Like Anne, I ask to have the opportunity to take back my dogs: but what I have found worked well is asking for owners to contact me quickly should they encounter problems.
Lately I have had sickness in the car questions and how to resolve them, and the latest, how to stop a pup chasing rabbits whilst he is normally good!!! Idea

So hopefully if they listen you can iron trouble before it becomes a real issue. And may prevent a rehoming...
