Mugi

Any ideas???

Shall I start by saying he is ok now and he will be seeing a vet tomorrow (or the next few days so I can see my fav vet if he stays stable).

Mugi, 12 next month was in his crate and suddenly gave a frantic bark. I immediately popped the others outside thinking he needed a pee and went to open his crate (less than a min to do this). As Mugi tried to get out he first walked into the bars then he fell out of the crate and staggered outside. Once outside he was slightly sick, then collapsed onto the ground and 'fitted' with all limbs spasming and his eyes glazed but not moving. I supported him and after only 15 secs or so he shook himself and went to cock his leg on a shrub and had a wee. He then staggereed back into the house and sat in the kitchen looking marginally confused.

I gave him 10 mins and then fed him which he ate with relish, although he sat to do it which is unusual (my thinking incase he had low blood sugar I would offer the meal he was due) and I have now popped him back in his crate where he is gently 'grizzling' as is his norm.

He seems fine in himself now, his gums are a good colour, his heart rate steady and he is breathing ok.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Liz - I have sent you a text if you read this before you see your phone just to let you know I would be posting.

My cavalier did something like this Sue.........my vet thought it was the equivalent of a mild stroke [dogs don't have a stroke the same as people] she was OK after a few hours but slightly lopsided. I hope he is OK now.
Mugi

Thanks Jan, he is having a snooze now Laughing .

I will see how he goes but a stroke sounds feasible.

Are you talking yet Question  Question
Mugi

Nope Rolling Eyes  - 1st July is D-Day - or talk day, and eat proper food day as long as I have no problems with the graft before.

Not long to go then..........everything OK at the moment Question
Mugi

Pretty much, I have a minor infection in my donor site but otherwise I am ok thanks.

Lorca ( 13) has done something a bit similar. Went inside and collapsed backwards as if doing a flip. Shook himself a bit confused too and then OK. He has fallen another time. He is sick from time to time and wretches. Of course we went to the vet and had blood tests done. His liver is failing but nothing else showed up.
The rest of the time he is perfectly OK...
Mugi

Thanks Patricia

Mugi was diagnosed with mild Renal and Liver Failure last year and he has a Heart Murmur so I guess it could all be related. He is still a bit uncoordinated but is currently snoozing by my side so I will wait for an appt with the senior vet unless he deteriorates. Ken knows me and my attitude to dogs, he will not try to get me to have tests etc that for a nearly 12 yr old dog are purely speculative, he will get the best of care but he won't be put through scans etc unless there is a very good clinical reason to.

Sue I sympathise...We all hear of Brits who go on and on ( I imported a male who is now 17, Gallo). but the reality is they go downhills and suddenly they look old ...sadly. Crying or Very sad
Like people they vary, I find they go senile before anything else...
But, noticeably, the back end muscles seem to wither, they get stiff in their movements.
Lorca's breathing seems laboured too when asleep, though I will add he is quite happy, he is the one who found the dead hare first and carried it. He still runs. He is deaf and snores...but as long as his quality of life is good...Old age is a sad thing.
Hope Mugi is OK...

Hi Sue

My Parents have a border-collie cross springer. He is about 14 years old and has had a series of mini strokes. They have taken him to the vets and he has confirmed that that is what it is. He is still very happy and we all call him wonky dog as he walks around with his head on one side.

The circumstances were very similar to Mugi. The good news is that like in humans it can affect animals in varying degrees and it sounds like it is very mild. Good luck tomorrow, fingers crossed.
Liz

I got your text OK Sue thanks.   Sounds like it cound be a sort of stroke, but I know dogs can make a very good/full recovery.

Give him lots of cuddles from us.
guy

the three britts Julia and i have our fingers and paws crossed for him.

I agree it is probably a mild stroke.  Brett had a few of those and happily lived to 16 years and four months.  Clyde reached 13 and had a massive one that he never recovered from - just fitted, was given calming drugs but didn't wake up.
Bonnie was 17 years and 3 months when she died nd had three minro strokes that made her 'wonky' too, but she was very fit and well otherwise.  I think Lorca is heading for the title of oldest UK Brittany  Laughing

Sorry to hear about Mugi, Sue.  He's a tough old boy though isn't he?

If he wanted his dinner 10 mins later sounds good to me  Laughing

It reminded me of our L/H Weimaraner, Jason, who had a torsion and was operated on at 3am (he was 9 years old) and lived to be 13.  Unfortunately he was never the same dog afterwards because if he ran he would pass out, collapse in a heap and come round a few moments later.  In the end we had to keep him on a lead, not much fun for a dog that loved to hunt.

Hello Sue,

Hope the Mugi boy and you had a comfortable night.  We are all sending positive vibes to him and you .  He's a tough old boy with a love of life.  From others experiences of minor strokes in their dogs the prognosis seems positive.

Lots of love to you both. XX
Mugi

After pampering my pooch - I sat up with him most of the night Laughing , he loved that but it is not happening every night!!!!!!! This morning he is bright, coordinated, all bodily functions are normal and he has had brekkie.

I have spoken to the vet and he doesn't want to see him unless he has another episode, he feels the most likely cause is low blood sugar related to his liver failure, next possibility a 'stroke' and final cause epilepsy. I am to keep him a diary of food, exercise, behaviour for a few weeks and see how we get on, if I am worried in the meantime obviously he can go for a full exam.

One suggestion was to pop him onto three meals a day, Mugi will adore that so don't you lot dare tell him it is the same amount of food per day just spread through three meals not two Shocked  Shocked  Laughing  Wink .

Glad you've had a chance to talk to the vet - sounds positive.

I'm sure Mugi will love getting an extra meal - don't let Rosie know or she'll be jealous Very Happy

We put Toby on to 3 meals about 6 months ago (for different reasons) and he has done very well since then.

Hope Mugi continues to do well.

Fantastic news!  Very Happy

I hope he is ok; Mugi is such an identity and we all love hearing of that wonderful boy.

I agree with Liz and your vet, I'd put him on 3 meals a day.  And by the way, that's how I've managed to lose weight - reduce size of portions and spread over the day.  I now graze all the time but never eat a big meal.  My problem was low blood pressure, kept falling down, may have been blood sugar related too????

Glad to hear he seems better.  I'm sure he'll get whatever attention he needs from you Sue.
Mugi

Well, he is doing fine but is less than impressed that I have kept him home today, mind you he is quite sleepy so in reality I think his spirit is stronger than his body today!!
