Bad end to a good dayWell I had a day of mixed fortunes yesterday. Went down to Midland Counties and managed to qualify Sherry for Crufts (assuming it takes place ) OK she was only 3rd out of 3, but that was good enough for me.
Had a great journey up from Stafford to Gretna with Anne and Allez and our friend Janice and her Red & White setter.
After I left them, though, things went pear-shaped and in really rotten wet conditions I hit a patch of water and aquaplaned off the road, down a steep bank and ended up in a deep ditch at the edge of a field of sheep!
Fortunately neither the dogs or I were hurt - apart from jarring my back - but the same definitely can't be said for the car.
The Police were great (why do they all look so young ) and decided they couldn't cope with all the water to get me back up the slope, so then a fire engine turned up and I was half carried up the bank by a load of firemen. The youngest fireman was delegated to get the dogs out the back of the car for me. Sherry got out the car and promptly dragged him into the ditch. Ozzy wasn't so confident what was going on, but he was fine too!
Fortunately Bill had hired a van for a workshop today so was able to come down to pick me or I don't know what I would have done.
So this morning it was phone calls all round and we had to go back down to where it happend - about 30 miles from home - to supervise them getting the car out of the mud. It looks a mess - but the engine started first time when they tried it. I expect the insurance will probably write it off, so I've got all that bother to go through next.
Still it could have been very much worse - 10 yards further up the road and I've had ended up in the trees!

Liz, it must have been a dreadful shock for you. As I said when you phoned to tell me, I doubt if I'd been so composed. I am so glad you weren't badly hurt and hope the aches and pains will go soon. Oh, and congratulations on the double Crufts qualification! No harm in making doubly sure of getting Sherry there

Hoping you get over your shock soon Liz...
Must be really scary to slide off the road...I guess it was your Scenic? they are quite tough, after having had someone " spin" us right round in France in ours...
Get better soon

Re: Bad end to a good dayI hope your back's OK and that none of you are put off traveling. I dread to think what sort of things go through your mind as something like that is happening

I bet it takes a while for him to live that down.
Best of luck getting back on the road.

My first thought was "Oh sh1t I've really screwed this up". My second was "Do mobiles work in this area" (fortunately they do - some areas nearby don't get any reception at all).
Patricia - there's a lot to be said for solidly built French cars like the Scenic
At the moment I'm still very stiff and sore, but I've managed to get an appointment with the chiropracter for later today, so I'm sure she'll sort me out.

Hi Liz, sorry to hear about your accident. Do hope you will soon be fully recovered. It is a horrible feeling. Many years ago I turned a bubble car upside down and the smell of petrol still reminds me of it. Thank goodness your dogs were uninjured. I would have loved to see Sherry taking the fireman for a walk. I bet he will not be getting a Brittany!
Take care.
