there are bones to chew and there are bones to eat. What are you looking for; increasing calcium intake or increasing jaw muscles?

I buy 'roasted' beef bones which last my boy months and months; these are the ones Guy refers to as sources of calcium. I am very careful what bones Gaston is given; obviously sharp bones are to be avoided; some people say never give them chicken bones, some say never give pork bones and so on; a good t-bone steak bone seems ok as do shank bones. But while we are worrying ourselves silly over what is good for them and what is not; you turn around and here himself is eating something that horrifies you!!!!

I see bones to eat as bit of rib, lengths of shin - with marrow still in etc, dog gnaws off meat and gets out marrow and then devours the bones. Large knuckles and large bones baked or otherwise we call 'dinosaur bones' in our house - these seem to be best for entertainment and fighting over.
Barley - if you offer him a meaty bone he will shy away from it, once Topaz has chewed the meat off it he (Barley) takes ownership. It is not the meat bit as he will polish the pattern off his stainless steel bowl when given raw meat in bits or mince. Any one any ideas?

Ditto with Gaston, Guy. I have bought big raw beef knuckles with meat scraps on them and all he does is fly around the garden with it trying to find a suitable place to intern it; the roasted ones he loves. So he gets them now and I make stock for Madeira or Perigueux sauce with the raw ones!
