Nice to have a contest where I'd have a chance of winning.

This is as deep as Bracken will go into the water and that's after a treat is thrown in for him.
He is getting better, he used to jump over puddles rather than get his feet wet.
Does anyone else have a water shy Brit ??

I have been working on getting Catja to go in from 'dry', she has been reluctant to do so and that has has cost us two working tests.
I would suggest you need to roll your trousers up and get in ahead. Also get a white floating dummy - ie very visible, a treat on the water will not be seen once the dog is swimming assuming it floats (the treat that is)
Does he know he can swim?
Could you get a light line across the pond? you could then reel him in - ie you go around and a helper holds the dog. You encourage him across at the same time as taking up the slack, you are not playing a fish but denying him the opportunity to return to the original bank.
Give him retrieves at the distance he is now happy, no steadiness just let him run in at them, lots of fun and lots of noise. If you do it on a windy day and he won't swim out just wait until the dummy comes back to where he will go.
Can you borrow a dog that does like to swim - a bit of peer pressure often helps.

A suggestion I was offered today was to wade in with the dog to the point where he was just touching the bottom then throwing a dummy onto the far bank. The theory being that he'll be swimming before he realises it. Haven't tried it yet but I'll let you know if it works (or you can let me know if you try it first).

Bill takes Ozzy along the river every morning, and up to a month ago he wouldn't go in at all.
Suddenly he started going in, first of all just paddling, but then suddenly started going out further and further, and is now swimming happily every time.
He's seen other dogs going in the water and I guess he just got the idea from them.
Our dogs have varied very much how they take to the water. One of our Weimaraners used to drink from the river by wading out till the water was up to her chin, then opened our mouth to let the water flow in!

Problem I have with Ghil is getting her out of water........when we took her to France she went into the sea, just out of reach and swam up and down, up and down and refused to come out for AGES

Same as that Jan,
Cedar will come back to me when I call her (she's very good lol ) but she seems to think that this doesn't apply when she's in the water .. she swam across the lake the other night and back again and was heading off again untill I used my sternest "come here now" voice and she hopped out of the water and wagged her tail in a "I'm here" fashion. Monkey dog that she is!

I know you've had a lot of rain recently like us but your weather would narmally be a lot warmer. Do you think that helps getting the dogs to go in the water?

WaterFor Merlin, No, makes no difference, he loved it in the UK and in winter here he goes in even when there is snow on the ground, he literally launches himself from the bank, no fear at all.
He seems to be oblivious to weather and wetness, nothing stops him. The winter before last he went out in the garden with a chew bone and lay chewing away, the snow was falling and he disappeared under it, but he was as happy as Larry!
The Chasse guys here think he is just smashing, but alas we do not work him.
Merlin has turned out to be a great mushing dog, I have a dog scooter and he has a special harness and line and we go for huge, very fast scooter runs through the mountain forests, he just loves it.
Scootering is getting trickier now though, last thing you want is your lead dog to turn on a sixpence and go on point )!!!! Makes for very sore knees when he does!

Extreme sports are proving to be the making of our Breton, he is such a relaxed, happy chap these days.
His food has changed a lot, he now has high performance food with an additive (minerals etc) to protect muscles and bones doing things like dog sledding.
My hubby has a fitment for his mountain bike for safe dog running and they go miles together.

ScooteringIt is truly brilliant if your dog has the know-how. I got my scooter from Diggler in the USA, but you can get a paw trekker in the uk, it has a rear wheel frame and is safer for road and footpath with your dog. I opted for the Diggler Dirt Dawg as it suited the mountain trails.
Lots of dog scootering on Youtube too.
