Brittany - Living DiggerRecently, Bailey has started to go into the garden and dig, in fact he digs inthe woods and in the pub garden when we are out. Now I know that Brits have a keen sense of smell, and some say that the digging is in response to small rodent burrows below ground but he has now started to hide his bones inthe garden as well.
I know its not through bordem, he has many many things to be doing and gets at least 2 x 1.5 hour runs during the day if not more ( mostly in the woods) and we do not take toys away except when playing at home..
We have just redone the borders and getting ready to returf the lawn but would rather kill the digging problem before hand if possible.
Any ideas.??
PS, when at home, the back door is open 95% of the time so he has free roam to do as he wants!
Thanks
Tim

I am waiting with baited breath for possible cures as our new garden resembles the Somme! We have holes everywhere, Tache digs then sticks her snout in and snorts like a pig looking for truffles, the more moss around the louder and longer the snorting!!!!

We laid new turf last year (just before 6 weeks drought, but that's another story). Most of it is fine, but there is a row of potholes along the front nearest the house. The worst culprit - Bliss, the 14 year old, closely followed by her daughter, Rosie.
Can someone explain to me why when they dig a hole there is never enough soil lying around to fill it up again?

I found this as well, but on closer inspection and by watching Bailey dig (hidden of course) they really do kick the dirt a long distance. The new 'pot hole' we have in the missle of the garden is a prime example, big hole, little soil around the outside but noticed soild a good meter away from the hole

You could always plant spuds in the holes!!

The burying of bones is as ancient as the canine!!!!! I just love how they will resurrect a particularly nasty internment when you and visitors are sitting on the patio enjoying the second round and they have just told you what a lovely dog he is - yeah right!!!! You're right about the dirt where does it go! My boy is not a great digger; unless it involves a rabbit stop!!

I have to admit the only time mine dig is out in the field - but only if I have someone else with me and we stop and chat - then they get so enthusiastic about that hole that we could be visiting you in Oz and NZ in double quick time.
