Today I was thrilled to bits - Sophie won 3RD PLACE in her second championship field trial!! I thought the NZ Champs result was beginners luck, but Sophie had other ideas - and beat Mother Spice in the process.
Stunned isnt the word for it really!
The official result is as follows:
24 November 2007 Southern Golden Retriever Club Champ Field Trial
Pointer & Setter Championship - Judge Mr R.Giles (NZ)
8 dogs entered - all ran and all but one completed their runs (3 Brittany, 2 GWP, 1 GSP, 2 HV)
Once again, the Brittanys finished within the top four places and we are waiting for the day when they can put it all together and clean out the top three. Neverthless, we are all pleased that our breed maintained our great form for another trial.
This will be our (the Hill's) last champ trial for the year and we will be coming out with all guns blazing ready for the new year in February!

Congratulations, you must be feeling very proud of your little gang
It's only a matter of time before you take all top places I'm sure

Well done, Chris, super news
It's such a pity your trials can't have the complete Hunt, Point, Shoot, Retrieve routine like a proper rough shoot day - then you'd REALLY eyewipe the lot of them!!!! But, hey - you can do that anyway! Go for it next year!

The first 2008 championship trial for the Holmbrook gang had two of the "Spice Girls" finish first at both ends. Spice was a bit rusty around the edges and moved on the traps, but basically made a nice tidy job of her run. Sophie, on the other hand, blotted her copy book completely with two huge chases when the homer was released! The rest of her trial was great, with the best rangeing of the day and an excellent dead bird retrieve. She lost ALL her points for steady to shot and game - little besom!!!!! Trouble is, it was probably my fault .....Recently, I had her out in the fields for a run, and she put up a hare and chased it. I was not fast enough with the stop whistle and she was too far out of range (both mentally and physically) by the time I got myself organised! I think the thrill of the chase took over on trial day - so she is in for some intense trap training before the next trial.
The official result is as follows:
1 March 2008 Otago Gundog Club Championship trial - Pointer & Setter
Judge: Mr K.Mattson (NZ) - Entries 8 (6 ran 2 scr)
1st Brittany - Ch & FTCh Leaningrock Lanark Spice QC (Hill)
2nd = GWP & HV
3rd Brittany - Lady Jane of Palmyra QC (Johnsen)
I must mention, in January, two champ pointer & setter trials were held
in the Southland area (way down the bottom of the South Island). The winner of BOTH trials was Bill Johnsen and Jane (Lady Jane of Palmyra QC). CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!
Coming up at the end of this month is the Canterbury Gundog Club 75th Jubilee championship trial. Two CC's are on offer for the winners of the respective classes (All Breeds, P&S, Retriever and Spaniel). Also, at the end of March, Barry is juding the South Island P&S Championship, also worth 2 CC's - so some good performances could see a couple more Field trial Champion Brittany's - with any luck!

yes they are - you should have seen a little 11 month run in her first Spring Pointing :-)

Come on then Guy, tell us more.

We ran in the GWPC SPT at Moundsmere in Hampshire - just happens to be the ground we dog in for and beat on.
She had two runs but unfortunately there were no birds on her beats (a couple did get up after she had turned up wind of them) - but she did retrieve to hand an old carcase - you know the sort, dried feathers and bones. Really pleased how she stayed in a self imposed zone, even when she worked a block of maize cover strip. On open ground i feel she put some of the other dogs to shame with her speed.
I just hope as she grows up she does not loose the sharp return she now has on the whistle.
I started the day saying i wanted her to have a good run and not find anything - so it is no good being disappointed when that is what she did.
Very pleased how her nose is developing. Her retrieving is becoming a little tiresome - but i will live with it :-) if it is on the ground or in reach it is fair game - bottles (glass) hair brushes, recycling cartons, screws, stones, strips of lead (the metal) screwdrivers, toilet rolls and that is before we get outside. The day before we had been picking up on a roost shoot - so windy the birds were hard to hit so she only had three.

What a fantastic foto!!!! Go Catya!!!!

After the problems I had getting Moss interested in retrieving I'd put up with anything being delivered as well.
Sounds as if you got what you wanted from the day, but maybe not what you expected?

Thats an awesome photo Guy - talk about action packed........!
I would not worry about the retrieving fanatic either - Sophie was the same; retrieved anything big enough to get in her mouth anywhere, anytime - BUT, it paid off being nice and verbally praising her when receiving a bit of cow pat or a dead bird! Out working, I now find she is always happy to retrieve the game, whether fur or feather and delivers it perfectly. I never told her off for finding and bringing back whatever.I believe it is better to nurture the instinct to pick up and deliver rather than admonish her for bringing me something unpleasant now and then.
Now, chasing the released bird is a different story.......!!
