Champions

I found this interesting information about Labradors in this months issue of the Shooting Gazette:

From 1946 to 1982 there were 220 lab show champions and 133 champions, i.e. 60 per cent were champions.
From 1983 to 2007 the number of champions has dropped to just 19 per cent.  Since 2003 there have  been just eight champions and 50 show champions.

The author, Gaynor Bailey, ends by imploring the labrador community to get back to training all their dogs.

I wondered how the Brittany compared, I seem to recall that there used to be a list of show champions and champions on the old website, but I can't seem to find it now.

Very few full champions, Keith - will try to find the file for you.

Good thread Keith...
We now have 6 Full Champions in the UK...
They are:Ch Tchao de L'Hospitalier, bred by Georgine Weber, owned by Mike and Pauline Beaven.
Ch Lorca de Keranlouan, bred by Patrick Morin, owned by Patricia Rush
Ch Patouche Jiji, bred by myself, owned by Alithea and Malcolm Lockie.
Ch and Dual Ch Tournesol Toutou, bred by Alithea, owned by Rory Major.
Ch Patouche Toscane, bred and owned by myself.
And the latest Ch Rochus Volcan, bred and owned by John and Barbara Anderson.
Mind you, the full champions are getting old now,Ch Jiji has sadly left us, Lorca is not too good... Crying or Very sad
looking forward to some more???

I've just checked the old site - we didn't have a list of champions on there.  Another job for Donald I think - they should all be on the database though it would be difficult to pick them out - I'll do a search on the main one.
Annie as admin

Right - I've got a list of about 30 Show Champions on the database Jayne does, I think - will upload it here and get Donald to put it on the website later.  Jayne, perhaps you'd check I've done it right

Hi,
If the database has all the information, then it is easy enough to set up a page that searches that and lists the different Champions.
I'll verify some details with Annie/Mum and get working on it, we should have such list available on the site shortly
barbara

Hi Annie

There are two recent SH Ch's - Eastonite Veep at Byeways & Vanilla Ice
Patricia

Well let's wait for some Full champions...With all those training days, it should become less worrying for people to take the plunge and have a go at various events like spring pointing for instance.
Sadly the KC does not recognise the importance of such activities, yet it brings to the fore the nose quality of the dog and its hunting desire for birds.
Show Champions with the amount of CC's we have won't be too difficult to count. Purely for me I want to know my dogs can do the job they were developed for. So an award in the field is more meaningful.
But...that is only MY way of thinking. Rolling Eyes
Annie as admin

It shouldn't be MORE meaningful - it shoud be AS meaningful - as it is in France - DUAL purpose Patricia NOT single purpose Wink
Annie as admin

Patricia - Donald is trying to set up a search facility on the database and wants to know the meanings of all the French initials - he may email you.
Anne
ps -anybody sent him photos for your entries on the database yet?

Nope cos I am assuming you want decent pics showing conformation as opposed to lunatic pictures of playing Brittanys Laughing . Will get a decent pic of both over the next few days and send it to Donald.
Annie as admin

Not all Brittanys in the UK are shown so a show pose may be difficult - anything which gives a fair idea of what the dog looks like will do.  Mine might be a head study of Allez - don't know what Donald will choose, or it might be a show pose as Ida took some nice ones last week
Patricia

Anne,
You know I try to breed my dogs as close to French conformation as I can!! Cool  Idea
I am going to push it here and say...like the French. Not a Sh Ch not a Ft Ch but simply a CH. Exclamation  In France, a show dog has to have an award in the field and vice versas. No Sh Chs'. A dog who does not work nor retrieves with poor hunting ability, however beautiful he/ she may be..is no good to me. Embarassed
I get huge satisfaction out of getting the rewards of the training put in.
The same as I get huge satisfaction out of a judge who knows what he/she is looking for in a Brittany. Wink
kandjt

Thank you for all your replies, I look forward to seeing the figures.

Reading the same magazine I found a quarter page advert from the Kennel Club for the Working Gundog Certificate.  I've not seen the advert in any other Shooting magazines and wondered if the KC had put the same advert in any of the other dog magazines/papers.

Keith
Annie as admin

I haven't seen it, I must admit.
The KC tests have been worked out for Retrievers and not separately for HPRs.  However there are various ways you can take the hunting and pointing test, then add in a retrieving test separately I believe.
Annie

The WGC can be achieved at a variety of events:
    A shoot using game.
A WGC day for dogs that retrieve using dummies
A WGC day for dogs that point
    A Gundog Working Test (GWT)

Show and Showing (Champions)

This is the first time I have been on your Forum, I was reading the list of show champions and noticed that the name of my bitch was missing off it, is there a reason for this or is she so uninportant that no one has noticed especilly as the list was as the 16th of July?
Just for the record her name is Sh Ch Eastonite Bracken.

Gill and the Mabeleen.
barbara

I am sure Bracken missing off the list was a pure oversight, Gill.  I have to admit I hadn't noticed.  I did check to see if E Veep & Vanilla Ice were on there as they were so recent.  There may be others missing so we all ought to look at the list.

There is due process in putting information on the website.  I receive an update from Jayne, our database co-ordinator, every so often when she has the time to update everything - show wins, new litters, changes in owership, hip scores etc.  It is then passed on to my son who is the Webmaster, when I have time, and when he has time he updates the website.  All changes can only be put on when they have been announced in the KC Breed Record Supplement.  Like everyone else, Jayne has a family life as well as our breed club and her own dogs.  Like everyone else on your hardworking Committee she does the best she can in the time available.  As soon as the update is received with your dog on it, believe me it will be put up here. No slight has been made nor intended.  You will note that no preference is given to any person or dog. The last update I received from Jayne was on 6th July, so perhaps the announcment hasn't been in the Supplement yet.
I hope you like the rest of the site.

Hi

In regard to the post regarding the missing Show Champions I would just like to point out that the data base is only updated when the breed record supplement is published and the missing Show Champions on the data base have not yet been published in the breed record supplement.

Thankyou Jayne, I except your explanation that is was an over sight. I get all the breed supps and I know when the KC anounce the confomation of Champions.

Gill, you are mistaken.  This was NOT an oversight!  We cannot presume nor put anyhting onto our website until the KC print items in the Breed Supplement.

It makes me wonder should the club 'special' ShCH dogs - as in put on special training sessions for such animals to help them make it to up a full CH?
Annie as admin

Yes, I think we should - perhaps this should be one of the items up for discussion in Ocotber? I'll pm you Guy
Annie

Yes Anne, I didn't say it was an over sight that was the good Jayne Cutler that said it in her mail to me., and as I say I reveive the Breed Supplements too. I agree you can not puplish what has not been confirmed by the KC!
I am sorry I am a bit touchie about this subject but I received NO well done from anyone in the breed when I won any CCs or when I made the Mabeleen up into a show champion. I know I am new in the breed but people I am not going away. I have grown to love this little quirke breed and I want more. I am not a John Thirlwell who has a good dog just to win in the show ring with, I want to do everything in this breed, work it, learn about it and show it. Hopefully breed it some day and judge them when I feel I have leant enough about them. I would like to be excepted in the breed as I feel I can offer my own experience in dogdome to this breed. Most people I have met in the breed are lovley and I have learnt alot from them and thankyou for that.

Gill and the Mabeleen
Annie as admin

I am sorry you didn't receive any congratulations on Mabeleen's CC's, it IS nice to receive them, but to be honest I think I could count on one hand the ones I received for Freckles' CC's and I believe Allez's Best in Show at Gundog Breeds only got three 'well done's'  I think you may have a good point there though - we perhaps need to acknowledge our Breed's wins more.
How about if everyone on this forum starts sending congratulations in some form or another to new Champions owners - an email, a card, a telephone call, a text message - whatever form which appeals to you.  We have a great little dog, and we all feel the same as Gill about falling in love with it and wanting to do lots of things with them.
I've sent Gay and Brian a text message and put Soufee's win on here, but as her breeder that's only to be expected.  You all know Gay our newsletter editor, so start now! Laughing
Ghilliegumdrop

With all due respect Gill.....not everyone goes to all the shows, nor do they read all the reports when they get their dog paper [if, indeed they take a dog paper] so very often people have no idea when a dog is made up.......also not all the writeups are in the dog paper straight away so it's very easy to miss something. If it is posted on here that you and your dog have done well then we do congratulate you. [by you I mean anyone who's dog has done well either in the showring or working].So please don't take it as a personal thing, it happens to us all at one time or another Very Happy
The moral of the story is....if you've done well stick it on here so we can see the results as Annie did, I believe, when Mabeleen was made up Exclamation
Patricia

Hi Gill Very Happy
Maybe it is different in Welsh?
I don't find many congratulate people on their achievements to be honest. Not even for a show champion...( also maybe differences of opinions????)
Can't say it bothers me too much!
When we first had CC's in the breed in 1997, I was astounded to win BOB with my newly imported Ivry de Keranlouan under Kathy Gorman-at Crufts-.
Can't recall many Well done etc...Even had a mediocre report of my bitch from a  well known French breeder who wrote what he thought on the whole judging in the French magazine. I was quite hurt. But nowadays, I just could not care less. Wink
As I know I would not swope my dog for anything!
So, no matter hey! Wink
highclare

Hi Anne, Jan and Pat,
Thankyou for your words.
I am sorry about being so prickly about this but it is because Mabeleen and I feel like outsiders even though I have been to all AGM's, open show's, training weekends, seminar's and champ shows. Also I feel I can only win under alrounders, and before you say it the win at Crufts was out of the blue and I didn't show her!!!!!
I have never pretened to know it all about this breed and have always wanted to learn, but I have 30 yearse in dogs, I have made up many champions, including full champions, been awarded 23 field trial awards, been placed 12 times in groups at Champ shows winning 2 and going BIS at Nat Gundog, but I was more thrilled when I made up the Mabeleen. What really upsets me is when I get spoken to like a child by people who are on there starting blocks in dogs. In saying that I am willing to learn and I have a long way to go in this breed, owning one Brit is me on the starting blocks!

Gill and the Mabeleen.

highclare wrote:

awarded 23 field trial awards,

Always interested to hear about trialling - can you tell us more?
highclare

Well Guy, I won all those awards with of course my Welsh springers. That is why learning with another breed is so exciting.
The only problem is I have had many opps in my life after horse riding accidents, so standing for long periods of time is very hard that is why I do alot more shows, at least you can sit down most of the day (Ha Ha).
I still go shooting as many times in the season as I can but only do a half day.
I have trained an English Springer Show Champion to its full Champion for someone else and I am currently training an Afterglow AM Cocker for the same for Mike Gadsby.
I have passed the show Gundog working cirt with 5 genarations of Welsh.
Now enough about that bull shit I want to learn to work or maybe trial the Mabeleen so all the help would be great!!!!!
guy

shame you are in Essex - a bit far away to meet up and do some training.
Annie as admin

There must be someone down there who can help Gill.  My geography is lousy - how far is Essex from Pat & Alan's place?  I was thinking of the next training weeked there in September.
Annie
eddieh

Depends what bit of Essex (Lovely county wav ) Smile ) But I would say most if not all of the county is within easy driving distance of Pat & Alan. Especially when you consider the distances dog people travel for various events. If, as I believe, Gill lives somewhere near the A12 in the north of Essex, it would be a fairly easy journey.
highclare

Thanks all, I live about 1hr 45mins from Pat and I am going to go to the next training weekend there in September. I have never asked Pat to help before because of the problem I started this subject with and that was not being excepted as a serious Brit person.
Now I can explain myself on this chat line maybe I will be taken a little more serious and we can all get on with the job of enjoying this lovely breed.

Gill and The Mabeleen.
Ps Anne can you put me down for the weekend at Pats pelase.
Annie as admin

OK, will do - I don't have prices from John yet, but in the meantime I have put out and 'APB' to all forum members asking who wants to go.  Just a bit too far for me though, even with the van.

For those in the East of the country...We already hold training days for the Norfolk and Suffolk as ( being Farmers) we have land and ..game...and lots of hares-  we try to breed as many as possible for the sheer entertainment of coursing Wink -
My cat is busy trying to thin them out, but !
We have had friendly rough shooting days in the past with " locals" like Trevor Lewis, Mick Young , not so local..Lester Anderson and Co...and Andy Coveney. This gets the dogs a chance to get shot over.
I get some help from my friend who is chairman of the N&S HPR club who has...those German dogs Cool .
He trials and always helps me when I need it. So maybe others too???
The only snag is. We need some released game too as everything is wild here and toddles off in the nearby woods later in the winter.
(We have neighbours who release for driven shoots)
. I have already said we can have shooting training days if the club buys the birds...
guy

I am not sure that should be a 'whole club' commitment as not everyone would be able to take part.

But how about a 'syndicate' within the club or even the HPR world; a fee, perhaps a day ticket to come and train a dog /s on the ground.  If you wish to shoot a separate 'bird' charge.  Number of days determined before the beginning of season, dues paid at beginning to allow it to self finance.

Perhaps to break even or make a small profit -to buy a 'bumper boy' type four dummy launcher for training?
Patricia

I know what you mean...but for shooting training days, you need birds and my neighbour tends to attract them later in the season due to the woods.
We don't charge anything, hence the idea of birds.
I have suggested it to the N&S HPR club who come here from time to time.

Hi all,
Just want to congratulate Harry Nelson on making his Brittany dog Sh Ch Eastonite Veep at Byeways into an Irish Show Champion.

Welldone to Harry and of course Amanda the breeder.

Gill and the Mabeleen.
doganjo

Yes, congrats from me too.  Harry just called me with the great news.  Well done Harry and Cynthia, and Amanda Veep's breeder.  And watch breed notes at the end of the month for full details.
