coat conditionCan anyone tell me what has happened to Monets coat - it used to have a deep shine and the fur was of good quality with well developed feathers. Now although there is a shine down his back the fur down his legs and on his sides has gone fluffy. almost downy...it catches loads of debris and turns knotty. Monet is one and a half now is this a normal coat for a Brittany?
Thanks Sallie

It is possible then his coat his coming through more fluffy as a result of his castration, I will leave it to more experienced peeps to advise but you may be able to improve the coat by stripping out the fluff.

I'm afraid Sue may be right. Castration can have this effect. Why was he done so young? and why at all?

castrationMonet was done because he was very hormonal - bonking everything in sight. plus i am not going to breed from him... however, monet is still bonking everything, so castration didn't work. That is a very lovely picture of monets mom - i can see where he gets his good looks from...thanks for the picture

It's the only bit of fun he can have now.........just got back from LKA with Merlin who has been with Hayley since last Sunday, guess what he's trying to do to Ghill I put it down to the bad influence up there
PS My daughter had her Border Collie done at about the same age as Monet..... About two months later he mated a bitch and tied for around 20 minutes. My daughter [not knowing any better] said it was a right hoot watching them wheelbarrowing round the room. She and the other dog's owner were very lucky as the other dog was a Jack Russell and quite a bit smaller than the B/C.

hormonesthanks for that insight - very interesting i'm glad that its not just Monet with raging hormones. he did try it on once with my other dog Poppy, but she soon put him in his place I think however his coat change was due to a diet change, i changed him from james wellbeloved to arden grange because of a windy bottom i also found that with arden grange he put on too much weight, so now Monet is on Burns. his weight is coming off again and there is a sheen coming back to his coat, but it is still fluffy

Neutering a dog at younger than maturity is in my opinion sheer moneymaking for vets and a great mistake, nor is there any need for it, if you don't want to breed from a dog you just don't let it have access to bitches in season. Brittanys are well known for having high sexual urges, his breeder should have given you information on the breed prior to purchase if you hadn't already researched it. They tend to grow out of it by the time they are two or so. Mind you I don't suppose you get this sort of info in books
You might find that his coat will always be fluffy, but what could help is making sure he has an oily supplement. My adult dogs all get a tablespoon of ordinary vegetable oil in their breakfast every morning. Helps keep joints supple too.
Here's another photo, Belle and Allez with my new cat. It's a bit dark but maybe you can brighten it.
