Cut PadsHi , i was just wondering what topics i could put in here when i thought of an incedent the other day that got me worried .
Baloo cut his pad on his ickle paw the other day i only noticed it because he was leaveing little red spots in the snow as we finished our walk..!
Lucky for him it was not to bad and all was well but what should i have done if it was worse than it was ..?
We had a group of kids smashing bottles over the local park where i like to take him for his training ..nasty blighters ..!!
Wont be taking there again ..but what is the answer as a paw would be very accessable to nibble off any dressing that i might have had to put on it..?

when mine have ut a paw i have just cleaned it and then put some germicidal cream on. the left it to the air - no dressing. Careful where i took him took about a week to heal.
My spaniel cut its paw so badly once i felt a trip to the vet was in order - his solution was to cut off the large flap and put on a dressing. the biggest problem was keeping it dry.
I have heard about putting chilli paste or some other noxious stuff on the outside of the bandage to deter chewing.
The worst hurt suffered was a barley awn that went u between the toes and into the foot the dog had been limping for a few days and every inspection failed to reveal any damage - so i kept assuming a sprain. when i did find it and pull it out 9quite easy as it was surrounded by pus) it was nearly 4" long. We were lucky!

I always keep a bottle of metacalm for painful injuries and a can of spray elastoplast for wounds. Nips a bit to start(and BOY can they squeal - but only a second or tow so bearable ) but it seals the tear so germs can't penetrate. HAndy for persistent chewing leg sores etc. I also use mustard to deter bandage chewing.
Hope this helps someone

Sorry last post a little ambigious! Was referring to my dyslexia as mentioned in another thread. Guy, my toys are back firmly in the pram and wont be thrown out again, sorry!
Funny Duncan wrote this thread as Tache has a pad problem at the moment.I think something may be embedded in it, wont let us come near, tried the old (no longer P.C) suturing of child routine: wrapping her in blankets to imobolize her(thank goodness for glue these days) but a distressed three year old is easier to get near to!Pain is definatly coming from the pad, will make a trip to the vets if unable to sort it out in a couple of days.

Tache - It was my attempt to be funny - having children who are sufferers I know of some of the problems.
I just thought Waaa as in 'boo hoo' - pad hurt so dog in tears.
Glad toys are back in pram.
Can you get paw into a bowl of warm salty water?

When our dogs cut a pad we spray on "Padaid" a product bought at the vets in a small spray on cylinder - its wonderful stuff.
An easy, quick remedy if you are in the park or out in the garden is to grab a geranium leaf and hold it on the pad for a few minutes. The geranium leaf works on cuts on any part of the body - animal and human - it worked on me anyway!!
Because we are often out and about in any type of terrain with our dogs, we have a first aid kit in the glovebox and it stays well stocked with both canine and human essentials. I also have a book on natural remedies handy so I have a quick reference for a natural remedy if an accident or problem occurs and we are miles from anywhere.
