Did You Know...

Did you know ......

Sailors in the late 19th Century referred to the heavy swell that preceeded a gale as THE DOG BEFORE ITS MASTER?

How to say Bow-Wow in:

Chinese = Wung Wung
Czech = Haf Haf
Dutch = Waf Waf
Finnish = Hau Hau
French = Woa Woa
German = Wau Wau
Hebrew = Hav Hav
Icelandic = Voff Voff
Portugese = Au Au
Russian = Gav Gav
Spanish = Jau Jau

DOGMA has nothing to do with dogs.It comes from the Greek DOKEIN - "to seem good".

CAVE CANEM (beware of the dog) is a motto that was worked into the mosaic floors of many ancient Roman houses. Some authorities now believe that it was not meant to warn against vicious canines,but to prevent visitors from accidentally stepping on the family's diminutive Italian Greyhound.

A FIRE SPANIEL in 19th century British Military slang, was a soldier who enjoyed lingering around the fireplace in the barracks!

Chris, there is a song about a nine dog night; apparently it is referring to a very cold night thus you need nine dogs sleeping around you to keep warm? I cannot think of the name or the band??!!
Finally, found the explanation of a saying my father used to quote...
dog in the manger - a person who will not let others enjoy what they themselves have no use for.

I so appreciate the companionship of my dog for I know of no other living creature, with perhaps the exception of a tsetse fly or a famished leopard seal, who would traverse 300 metres at maximum physical speed to reach my waiting arms.
