Discover Gundogs

I've received an email requesting Brittany representation at two Game Fairs.

The first is the Yorkshire Gamefair to be held at Harewood House (near Leeds) on May 24th and 25th.

The second is the Royal Gamefair (formerly Southern Counties) to be held at Mapledurham House, Reading on July 3rd/5th

If anyone wants to do the Yorkshire one I need to know by the end on this month, those able to go to the second event don't need to let me know until the end of April

You get a parking pass and entry tickets (caravanning is available at both events if you want to do the full show, passes are available for this as well)
johnhod

Following the resounding response to my first request for people to help out (4 replies, one of which was positive,  thanks Keith for offering to do the Royal in July)

As the final date for registering interest in the Yorkshire Gamefair to be held at Harewood House (near Leeds) on May 24th and 25th is fast approaching I thought I'd try again.  I need to know by the end of this month so I can get FREE passes, etc.

I'll be their both days so even if if you can only do one day  it will at least enable me to take a break
doganjo

If I was nearer I would, but with times as they are 3.5 hours each way in petrol is a lot of dosh.  Sorry.  I usually do the Scottish Game Fair at Scone but the NE in France is the same weekend I think and I'll be there.
Lin Dyke

John have sent you a pm re' this .
sallie

Sorry John, i can't help you out there... if request further to home come in, let me know and i will help out.
johnhod

Thanks all.  Lin I'll get in touch.  Annie and Sallie.  It's understandable that not everyone can help at all events (especially when they conflict with other events).  If anyone has anything we can decorate the stand with I'd appreciate it.

Leaflet attached - do you want photos or do you have plenty of those?  Feel free to use anything I've put on the Internet.  Did you have anything else in mind?

John - these are the handouts we had a Crufts.

I am not sure a game fair would be the best place for the background photo strips - until we get them laminated and stronger.

I agree about the photo montage Guy.  I'm also aware that there is other display material but the problem is getting it.

I'm happy to make do with photos and leaflets though, it doesn't matter too much if they go missing then.

Hi john
I have 3 or 4 poster sized Britt pics

I currently haven't got any of the stuff used at the CLA last year, I am looking to change the format of that display anyway so once I get hold of it I will send you on te spare photos if you like.
johnhod

Those of you helping at Harewood, I've had an email today saying the passes are in the post so I should be able to post yours on by the end of the week
Dave A

Hi John

Thanks for that , I was starting to wonder what had happened.

Information sheet here - feel free to use any part of it or all of it for any promotional events.  I did it, so also feel free to change anything as you see fit.  I've removed names.  I've also attached some photos of French dogs which can be printed and used for displays.  HAve loads more if you want them.

A big thank you to everyone who turned up to help out at Harewood House.  We had two busy days with lots of interest in the breed.  At one point on Monday we had nearly as many Brittanys visiting us as we had in the display area.

I think we need to invest in some more good quality promotional material if we are going to accept the invitations to these events.  I know we put on a good show at Crufts and the CLA but these smaller shows are, in my opinion just as important.
Dave A

hi John
Well done to you and family, It was a big effort from yourselves especially in the rising temp over 2 days.
And yes i agree something a bit more polished in the banner department would look better

Dave A

sounds like an AOB for Sunday.   Laughing

I will bring along the spare piece of Crufts banner.

John, Edna and Hayley bore the brunt of both days in a very hot tent and not forgetting their three dogs who also had to put up with my very bossy bitch.  I agree with John that the breed needs to be present at every show we can get to, not only the small shows but particularly at the Midland in September.  This show is probably the most important show of the year for many sporting shooters, last year they had 87,000 through the gates and the breed wasn't represented in the sporting gundog tent!  I was a little disapointed because it was at a Midland show many years ago I first fell in love with the Brittany.

Keith
johnhod

Hope everything went well at the Royal this weekend.  Trust it wasn't too hot.
kandjt

It was a brilliant weekend and lots of thanks to Lin and Jim for all their help.  The dogs were the stars of course and Copper deserves a medal after being henpecked by my girls all weekend.  Although it was hot it wasn't as hot as Harewood and the site is probably the best I've seen and made all the better by the Thames through the grounds, there was always one or two wet dogs in the tent.

We had lots of interesting conversations with of course 'the obligatory they're Spaniels discussions' cropping up regularly.  Perhaps we need to think of forming a demonstration team to show a Brit pointing?  All the demonstations of gundog work this weekend were very, very similar no matter what the breed, cockers, IWS, Chessies, Labs and Springers.  The Tollers did a little demonstration of their dance but the majority of their demonstration was exactly like all the others, even the training session at the end covered the same ground.  There wasn't one demonstration by an hpr or pointing breed.  I know that it isn't the easiest thing to stage but I remember many years ago seeing a GWP demonstrating pointing with a domestic duck in a very small arena and was amazed by the number of people around us who hadn't seen a point before.  I do think that many people who regularly attend shows are a little bored by what is essentially the same old sit, recall, retrieve demonstration.  At the end of sunday we had an impromptu training session by the river and easily attracted a small audience who got really involved.  Just a thought, but a Brit wearing a bell suddenly coming on point is IMHO one of the most exciting and memorable experiences in gundog work.

John, Louise asked me to thank you for all your help and that she'll pass on anything she gets about the Midland and that she's organising both shows next year and will be touch.

Keith
johnhod

Thanks to you all and to the dogs.  Glad it all went well.

I agree it does get boring watching the same old demos.  Doing the same thing all the time is the easy way out though, isn't it?  Although you do have an idea of what's going to go wrong that way.  Well it's something to think about for the future
Lin Dyke

We had a brilliant time with Jane and Keith and their girls  Very Happy  Would love to do it again  Smile    Copper had a great time  Very Happy   Keith, I agree with you re' the demonstrations, they were very much the same thing each time.  Copper's swimming lesson did attract quite an audience, some of them getting a little damp  Shocked

Day off today so will attempt to post photos later.

That really shows the stand well.  The banner, imo, was the most outstanding one there.  Great job Keith  Smile   Jim put together a photo montage and Jane produced a very neat threefold leaflet  Cool

Well done it looks great, It sounds like a competition for next years Yorkshire game fair J H.

Why reinvent the wheel.  I'm all for stealing other people's ideas.  That's not to say we shouldn't get some more stuff to improve it even more.  I'm sure the committee will approve some additional spending on display material Evil or Very Mad

Ah yes, but will the Treasurer................. Wink
johnhod

Of course she will.  She's a truly wonderful person who belies the scurrilous accusations of meanness laid against the Scots Very Happy  Wink

Do you mean she isn't Scottish, but pretends she is to justify being thrifty ?

I am Scottish to the point of mean-ness!  Believe it and believe it well!  My ancestors were horse thieves, raiding the English B-------s stables and heading for the mountains of Skye ! Laughing  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing

How much spending is envisaged and what on?  Since I am more work oriented now and slightly less show oriented I COULD be persuaded.  Wink

The guy taking the official photos at Royal County has posted them.  Look here for pics of Britts (and owners)

Thanks for posting the links John.  Jim went to their stand  but it was so busy he couldn't get to speak to them.
johnhod

Dates for next year have been posted so plenty of warning to keep spaces in your diaries.  Yorkshire Gamefair 30th and 31st May, Royal County Gamefair 21st and 22ng August (I've queried that one though as it's a lot later than this year)
Tricky micky

I would like to do leeds weekend with caravan if thats okay Iohn

Lin Dyke

We're more than happy to do The Royal again.  It is a lot later than this years one but change of date could be due to it having clashed with another little local do downstream from Mapledurham, ie Henley Regatta  Wink
doganjo

Might try and take the motorhome to Yorkshire one, John.
johnhod

That would be good.  It's a lovely site and the Discover Gundogs is really well organised

Hey, you're a useful person to have in the Club!
eddieh

I notice that two people have already shown an interest, but, If there is space, I would love to do Yorkshire in 2010.
If not I'll just have to come as a visitor.
Very Happy
I can probably do this (visit) more easily than Mick, and definitely more easily than Anne, and they have more idea what they're talking about. But if you're pushed.........

In fact. If you're pushed for any in the South of the North, the North of the South, the East of the West, the East or the Midlands.  Laughing  Let me know.
doganjo

Well I may not make it after all, as I'm going to sell the motorhome in the Spring - not getting enough use of it as it's too big to drive on my own. So you'll just have to do some swotting (and travelling) Eddie. Laughing  Laughing
johnhod

Thanks for the kind offers.  I'm stuggling to keep up with postings at the moment as I've managed to lose internet connection at home.  Hoping to get fixed up with a new IP soon (but it could be a couple of weeks) so in the meantime I have to rely on making time in work (not too difficult usually)
eddieh

Nobody with an unsecured wireless network near you then John?

Have you thought of P/Xing the thing for a boat Anne?

Oh very funny, ha ha. ha bliddy ha.  My chickens now have webbed feet.  I take my dogs for a swim every day instead of a walk.  I have just treated myself to an early Christmas present of a tumble dryer because I have three loads of washing to be done, another two sitting wet in baskets and an other two outside that have been there for a week!  I HATE RAIN!!!!!!!!

My dad learnt to swim in the Thames at Barking, downriver from the northern outfall.

Your problem is?
