Dog Buggers away through back gate

hey,
waldo's son here just wondering how we can stop our dog trying/succeeding to get out the back gate...
she's only just started going out the gate when we go through recently. she used to be very good.
we're still in the training stage and after she gets outside with all these distractions like cars, other dogs, birds, scents she doesn't really want to come back quickly

Cheers,
Zac

Keep it locked?

Is she opening the gate or sneaking through when you get out???

As I have 4 dogs of which two are very fast at getting through past human legs both my back gate and my front door are double protected. Both areas have the ability to shut the dogs securely behind a secure gate prior to opening the access to the road. When one dog is loose only they are made to sit and wait and I give the command before opening the gate, till I was sure they were safe I didn't risk them sneaking through.

If she is able to open the door herself then it is a matter of finding a lock that can fool her. My WSS is very adept at figuring out how to open doors and he can sometimes manage round door handles too Rolling Eyes . He has recently cracked opening a patio door as he knows to drop the latch before pulling on it while making sure his bodyweight is not holding the door closed - too bright for his own good that dog.

she can't open the gate, the latch is about 5 foot high

she goes through when people go through, particularly if somebody has a bag or is carrying something with them, so they have to open the gate fairly wide

I'd think seriously about discouraging her from approaching the gate while people are going through it.  She needs to sit a few feet away until called through.  As you say she is still int the training stage please make sure that the sit is well implanted into her mind.  Sit means sit and stay until she's told to move.

I would also keep her on lead to make sure she stays put till called through, and don't let her just run off at teh other side of the gae either.  Make sure she heels for a bit before being given the release.

Hi Zac
what is the reward for getting past you? and if there is one do you have any control over it.?

Like Sue i had a dog who could open a door on his own (inwards) quite amusing at first but irritating in the end as there was  no way of keeping him in the house if i was out.

I make mine sit at the doorway whilst i go out first and then call them through.  Not only because i have no wish to compete with them in the narrow space but also there is an element of 'I am the hunter and I am going out to check what is out there and you can come and help when i say'  Now i don't know if a dog thinks at all like that - but it works for me.

They go through the same routine on the way in, sit and wait until called and at styles (steps over a fence) but here they are sat first, i get over and they are called over by name, different order if i can manage it so there is no anticipation.
