Excited barkingI hope this is in the right section.
Tommy is now 10 months old and is driving us mad with excited high pitched barking in the car. When we approach somewhere he recognises – the forest, the beach, etc. where he goes out for a run - he gets into a frenzy of barking. Our other dog, a ten year old Springer, recognises the places also but she doesn't bark, just gets restless. I think Tommy picks up on this signal and it sets him off. (They are secure in the back of the car with a dog guard)
Apart from this he is very good – walks well on the lead, comes back when we call him, is well behaved and relaxed in the house, very affectionate, not aggressive – it's just this high pitched barking in the car. They both get lots of exercise on and off the lead.
Any tips please?

Does he do it if you take him out on his own Ghillie will bark at people and dogs going past but, so far, Merlin leaves her to it. You could try the water spray thing but I'm not sure that works

You could end up with a very wet inside to your car if you take up Jan's suggestion

We are going to try taking him out on his own today. I have made a list of things to try ... I had thought of a water pistol ... We also give them both a good run around in the garden before we go out.
Judy gets restless when we are near a favourite place then when Tommy starts barking she leaves him to it, she doesn't join in.
It's not a guarding bark - it's a high pitched "I can see the forest and I want to be out there" bark! He recognises the place where we turn off the main road ..... When we arrive we don't let him out of the car until he has calmed down. He likes being in the car and will happily jump in even when it is in the garage.
Apart from this he is a happy and friendly dog and is responding to all other aspects of training.
I will try the bark on command and then quiet on command suggested by the posting referred to by Guy.
thanks to you all

In the car Judy our Springer (10 years old so very experienced) likes to sleep in the well in front of the passenger seat. We can be driving along and when we get near one of her favourite places she starts sniffing the air vent and then gets up to have a look out of the window. She must identify places by smell. Tommy hasn't started this yet ..... no doubt she will teach him ...
