Thank you
he is really fat lol
sallie

Fat and happy  Laughing  he looks a really nice dog
alibindahouse73

If anyone has any ideas how i can get him to lose weight that would be great ?? his got fat since he was castrated lol
Annie

Same as us, Ali - more vegetables less meat and carbs.  You can make a veg puree and flavour it with herbs. I had a Cocker bitch that worked with.
sallie

Hi, try cutting down his kibble and bulking it up with veg, fill treat balls with part of his dinner so he has to work for it and a smaller bowl might help so he thinks he is getting a big dinner when actually it's being reduced. There's no quick fix - Monet has 3-4 hours of walking/hunting/training a day and is a whopping 18.6!! So if you find something that works please let me know.
Annie

18.6 is NOT heavy for a standard male. Allez is that He is 49.5cms
guy

don't think 18.6 is that heavy.

Ali Finn looks great. If I could describe my Finn in human terms he is kind and gentle. Im sure his brother is the same. A little gentleman. The rest of them are a bunch of Yahoos compared!

Finn is the same , I can leave jack who is tens weeks old on the floor on his mat and Finn is fine with him , Finn just likes his bed lol .
I do have to say when he is off his lead he can be ok for 10-15 mins then he justs runs off ??? its like a monster has taken over him lol .
But i cannot fault finn what so ever if all brittanys were calm like him i think i would end up having loads lol i just love them .

Has your Finn always been calm or has he settled down when he has got older ?
Patricia

Poor Finn is really fat!
Indeed castration does not help but coat and weight can easily be managed by more exercise- off lead Confused - and a controlled diet.

There are some good weights reduction foods on the market. One is Hill's
science reduction diet. As Anne says less carbohydrate. It worked well on my Scottie who refuses to run if she carries too much weight. Crying or Very sad
Bitches can get too fat too.
I have seen spayed bitches looking like wooly things and little round balls.
It does no good to the joints or heart.
Brittanys need at least half an hour off lead to run off excess energy, release frustration and stay in condition.

Hi Annie, stealing the thread a little - but i thought that the top weight for a male Brit was 18k? Monet is just a little taller than Allez at 51cm at the shoulder.

Sorry Ali - i know i am being rude by stealing your thread - but it might be helpful in the long run to you Embarassed

Ali if there was a crisis in the dog world Finn would be and always would be the cool head in it! He has always been more refined than the others. I would say he is unflappable, or unimpressed, I haven't made up my mind yet!

He does have a curious trait of 'giving me his paw' I don't know if he learned it as a pup before I got him or its just picked it up along the way. I haven't encouraged it directly. He will sit beside you and put a paw on your knee. Not as much to say 'heh, pet me!!' but more I feel to draw my attention, as in, 'excuse me but have you seen what those young ruffians of dogs are doing over there'.  Laughing

Maybe he just like to strike a pose as when sitting he likes to get above you and place a paw on your head. Mad dogs!

There is NO weight standard for Brittanys in the UK, only a height standard, as quoted below
Size
Ideal height at withers:: Dogs: 48-51 cms (19-20 ins); Bitches: 47-50 cms (18½-193/4 ins).
Over 51 cms is over standard, as is under 48 cms, bitches as above

Our Finn loves to lie across johns shoulders on the sofa lol he is just lovely .

Finn with his exercise and feeding he has a long run off his lead and then i or john walks him at least 3 miles around the country roads morning and night . His feeding , Well he dont eat that much but if he had his way he would eat the whole house lol and the cat !

Below is a picture of Finn before we had him . I am trying to get him looking that thin again lol

Patricia

From the French standard: with a tolerance of 1 cm for height. Either under or over. You will be surprised how many bitches are NOT 18 ins. Ditto for males under or over ideal size.
Only a proper measuring stick will tell. Either way a dog/ bitch on the high side of the standard is tolerated as long as he/ she are excellent specimens of the breed.
46 cms and under make it harder for the dog to work in higher cover/ retrieve large cock birds or hares. Crying or Very sad
Regarding the weight, it is nothing for a bigger dog to be near the 19 kgs, ditto with the bitches. Run your hands down the side, look for the " going in" at the waist. You should feel the ribs without them being prominent. Jut a nice overlay of fat!!! Very Happy

Finn does look a lovely dog, kind, gentle and placid... and to me thats the most important quality in a dog, especially around children and anyway it won't be long before he looks slim again, it's summer with lovely long evenings!
alibindahouse73

i know i love walking through the fields , We have 1 feild with 8 horses in it and every time i blow the whistle they all gallop towards me and for those who have seen me i am only 4ft 11  Embarassed so i have to run away from them lol  Embarassed

Keith, Gaston does something similar; he is not wanting food or anything, it seems its just a connection.   When I am sitting at the table he will rest his chin on my leg and just stand there.   I'll pat his head and he is quite content!!   Aren't they funny little gorgeousnesses!!
Annie as admin

Whenever I sit down, Allez will get up from wherever he is and come and lie down right beside me with some part of him over my feet or leaning against my legs.

You've got a Finn and an Oisin! Do you live in Tir na n'Og lol ... Lovely names!

Oisin ???????
mcelkek

Oisin!

Well spotted Naomi! That's where I'm getting my names from. I like those names and would call my kids that if I had any! I would say they would love being named after the dog like Indiana Jones!

That reminds me of a thing we did for laugh down the pub the other day. Have you ever played 'Find your porn name?' You take the name of your first dog and your Mothers maiden name and that's your porn name!

Mines Max McKenna!

Not as bad as my mate who was Fluffy Doherty!

I nearly fell off my bar stool when I heard that one!

Using my first dog's name, I'd end up as Holly Salmon. Another way of doing it is to use your first pet's name which is a little more amusing in my case. My first pet was a budgie called Tinny.

Ali, if you feel the need to look down on somebody, I could introduce you to my 23 yr old daughter who is 4ft 10 Smile

Mine is fairly ordinary - Susie Donald

Count yourself lucky Annie, my mate Fluffy has not been called by his real name since!  Laughing

Maybe Sula McConaghy would be better - at least we're both female  Laughing

Well, I could be Brandy Donald or Major Donald instead Wink  - Susie was my own first dog (cross Cocker/Lab), but Brandy was our first pedigree Cocker after we married, and Major was my Granda's shooting companion(Working Springer) that I grew up with. Laughing
