Food ColouringsSilly question day....
Do dogs go hyper active if they eat food colourings? Monet for example has totally lost his head this morning, i changed their dog chews as the pet shop didn't have any natural treats left... these treats are multi-coloured. He is being bad, very bad He is also windy, but i expected that due to them containing grain.
Maybe Patricia, you could ask your daughter for me please. Ta.
Until then NO treats!
Have to go he is destroying the sofa

Will do Sallie
Jessie will be receiving intensive training for the Specific vet diets and going round many Practices inlcuding all of East Anglia but also as far as Nottingham..
It is always good to have correct scientific advice from Specialists.
I have written a letter back to Eileen Geeson who made me mad( Dog World)
According to her the dogs are dying of cancer because they are being fed wheat, are vaccinated and the Farmers spraying chemicals finish it all off!
It is always better to speak to the people who know.
Jess has said before that additives and colouring is bad for dogs
Will get back to you as soon as I have a concrete answer. Good luck with your sofa

While I don't agree with Eileen Geeson about a lot of things I do agee that vaccinating every 12 months needs sorting out.
Several vets that I know of will not vaccinate with all the same stuff every year, in fact my vet does things on a three year rotation....except of course for Leptospirosis which is done every year as there are rats around the farm where we go beating and picking up. I know there are rats in a lot of other places as well so rather safe than sorry.
I lost a Standard Poodle at 2 1/2 years due to having a parvo booster only six months after having had one with his normal jabs. We were [alledgedly] in contact with puppies that had died of parvo and my, then vet, insisted it would do less harm than if he had caught the disease. He was given the jab in March 1992 and he was dead by the July having developed Auto-immune Haemolytic Anaemia. The vet still insisted it was nothing to do with the vaccine. This has been proved to be totally untrue as the antibodies for parvo can stay in the system for up to 3 years. In those days they didn't do blood testing to see if the extra jab was needed.

I also think food colourings affect dogs.
Some years ago I had a vet, think it was when I lived in Leicestershire, who was of the opinion that, after a certain age, dogs didn't need to be vaccinated every year, unless some new ailment appeared. I do get our lot done annually but take notice of Jan's experience and warning of repeat jabs that could be unnecessary. It is one of those damned if you don't and damned if you do situations

Sallie, I recall a woman I knew in Australia with a very hyperactive child and 'they' put it down to the food colourants...if it effects children like that, then it would dogs as well. Notice, in some stores, just how hard it is to buy dog and cat food without colourants!!

And how do you tell if a Brittany is any more hyperactive than they usually are?

"And how do you tell if a Brittany is any more hyperactive than they usually are?"
... Well John ... if the bottom of your sofa disappears in tatters, the stuffing is pulled out of all toys, the duvet keeps finding its way into the living room and the towels are being used as tuggies, i can safely say that Monet has had a change in personality ... the only different thing he has had is the coloured chews, which are safely put away in the dustbin... Needless to say a little Brittany was nearly up for sale today however, he is back to being placid around the house with the naughtiest thing being ... opening doors, which i think all Brits do

You are right Sallie...It is unusual for a Brittany to be that destructive unless they they are stessed and suffer from either separation anxiety or other behavioural issue.
I don't find Brittanys hyperactive myself. Just fast when out. My lot( 6 of them) go and curl up in their bed or crawl on my lap in the evenings. The pup plays with her toys and races around, but that is it. Athos HAS to point and set the cat on a daily basis but then he was not brought up with them.
So, why is Monet like it? It must be a reason?
Vaccines: I would prefer to vaccinate every 3 years but Janet is right: Leptospirosis must be done if rats have access to ponds or ditches. That vaccine lasts 9 months whilst the others much longer.
Food: Been covered before. Cheap commercial is more likely to have colourants and additives, but I will get the correct information.
As sor Farmers killing everything with sprays, humm...My husband would be dead by now!
For those interested, if those sprays were to be banned, you would get Fungi on the wheat. which is much worth for your health! That is not allowed as well as Ergot. Ergot was known to send a lot village of French people mad. They look like little bits if stick in the wheat.
Pity the BBC cannot interview more Intelligent and better spoken people

Don't read magazines, as i am never impressed or interested in the articles, plus the price ... i mean does it justify the means?
Haven't got Poppys annual boosters done for the last 8 years - she hasn't been ill with anything apart from arthritis, this is due to an agility accident.
Monet gets boosters as i'm not sure it is fair on other working dogs (gun or farm) to work along side with them knowing he might have come in contact with a contagious deseases ... i do take Monet to parks and the city centre ... these are frequented by travellers - and it is known that their dogs do carry parvo, distemper etc.

Did you know that Ergot is being blamed for the Salem Witches going daft People in those days would not have known what effects it could have on people and would have continued to eat the wheat regardless of it being covered in Ergot. It is, of course, also responsible for a lot of abortions in both people and animals

abortions in both people and animals " well I did not know that!
As for going insane that is correct. I have seen some ergot( in some years) as I sometimes tip the trailers in the barn. Little black bent stick When we went training with our HPR club, we went on the edge of a field of wheat.it was really poor and thin with litle ears. It was unsprayed and ..organic. and black looking...hummm....

| Quote: | Ergot (Claviceps purpurea) is a parasitic fungus grown in
certain cereals particularly rye. Before the use of modern
method to remove it, mass poisoning was common. It causes
vasoconstriction and uterine constriction. The former effect
can lead to gangrene of the feet and arms. The affected tissue
become mummified and drop off without bleeding. The limbs
often turn black and the sufferers experience a burning
sensation. In Medieval time, the disease was also called
St. Antony's fire after the shrine where the sufferers sought
relief. The uterine (oxytonic) effect made it popular for inducing
labour, this is not longer used for normal labour as it can cause
death to the foetus. The ocular effects of ergot include marked
retinal vasoconstriction with oedema and cataract. |
Sounds nasty

It is used today in some medicines, I believe.

I used to suffer quite badly from migraine when I was in my late teens and early twenties and took tablets containing Ergotamine which I believe is a derivative of ergot. I remember reading that it constricted blood vessels all the stuff John quoted about gangrene and such. A bit off putting, but if you have a real migraine those concerns tend to go out the window. I do not know if it is still used for migraine relief

"I do not know if it is still used for migraine relief"
Knowing the European laws, everything will be banned soon
I was suprised the other day when Jess had a delivery of 15kgs bags of Proplan. The drivers are not allowed to handle it as they might do themselves an injury.( The Albanians don't care though) so little Jessie unloaded the lot!
My builder is not suuposed to carry bricks up ladders etc..the world has gone totally mad. How do you suppose men are going to stay men if they go on like this???

Window cleaners are not allowed to clean office windows if they have to go up ladders.....something to do with health and safety laws. I wonder how people have managed for so many years without all these laws

I've had to do a risk assessment for engineers who come on site cos they might have to use a screwdriver
They have to be "inducted" and sit through a video telling them how to use the tools they've brought with them

I bet they enjoyed that

I do wonder how much of this health and safety nonsense is nothing to do with keeping people safe but restrictions imposed in an attempt to make sure that there is no chance of some greedy idiot with zero common sense suing you.

As our site Staff Health and Safety person and having to sit through three days of courses etc to get my certificate and everyday being given mindless dribble to read through, I now believe that what much of this H & S stuff is, quite simply social engineering...basically it is dumbing down, if you like!! It erodes what John Seymour quotes as GOOD OLD MOTHER COMMON SENSE.

I was at an oil company's office for a meeting last week. We had to sit through a 20 minute H&S video that told up to put a lid on the coffee cup if we were moving with it and to make sure we held the handrail if we had to go upstairs. Evidently though it was ok to negotiate the ice covered steps outside the building without the help of a handrail.

John, that is unbelievable Interesting to see what other people do and what hoops they have to jump through.
At the farm( and because many people die in farm accidents- tractors , machinery, slurry lagoons, animals etc) they sent us a booklet with a piece of rope neatly tied with string in a nice little bow. To remind the farmer to be careful and come home safe! so you go and tie them in various places
The paperwork ( and all those trees cut down ) is unreal and looking through it was baffling.
ie, don't let your cows go through the same gateway as it will destroy the structure of the soil and make mud
As Victoria says, talk about how to teach your grand mother to suck eggs) And being Crop Quality Assured, we get an inspection and a nice little sticker like a little kid who has a " star" on his exercise book
Glad to see it is the world over, makes me feel better!!!

I remember when the COSHE agreement came out, Sandy (yes, THAT long ago) came home with the paperwork to show me, because I wouldn't have believed him otherwise - that if he spilled H2O on his Lab work bench he had to flush it with ............... WATER!!!!!
