Anyone heard of a Brittany type dog missing on Merseyside?
The young bitch shown at the link is classed as a spaniel cross but looks a lot like a Brittany to me.

It looks like a Brittany to me as well John.....with a tail

I've emailed Margaret and I'll give the kennel a call in the morning to try to find out more.

She sure looks like a Brittany. Someone is missing a lovely little girl.
Hopefully this will have a happy outcome for her.

If we think she is around 6/7 months Jayne or I can look up the database for registered litters around that age and find possible breeders. Dogs are not always transferred to owners names so we may not trace her owner straight away. Have the kennels checked to see if she is micropchipped? That reminds me - I must change my adress on mine.

How sad about this little pup-hope she finds her owners soon! I've found a litter that was born 11/11/2007, plus a labardor breeder was selling an adult Britt in february, Annie shall I pm you with these details? rgds Glynis & Fen

Yes please Glynis - where did you find this? Our database info comes from the Kennel club, so we only have registered dogs on it.

I spoke to the kennel this morning. All they would tell me was that she was in need of medical attention but that they had found a home for her with someone experienced in the breed.
|
Ghilliegumdrop

Perhaps they would pass on details of the club John, if you gave them the information.
|
Annie
|
So if they found a home for her with someone experienced in the breed they know she is a Brittany?????

Thank goodness Fen is microchipped. The poor owners to have lost their dog I would be inconsolable if madam went walk-about.

When I phoned them I said "I understand you have a Brittany in the kennels" They knew the dog I was talking about so someone has obviously told them it wasn't a spaniel cross. When I asked if they wanted contact details for the Rescue that was when they told me that they had rehomed her 'with someone experienced in the breed'

Nothing more we can do then, let's hope it's a success.

Some of these rescue centres are...so above themselves
This has happened before. What is wrong with the people running such establishments in politely considering that the breed club knows the dogs inside out???
And taking phone numbers to pass onto the new owners should he/ she need to know more on the idiosyncraties of the Brittany?
After all another life line is always useful...
And I'll say it again. If responsible breeders tattooed , the information would be available right away. Owner/ breeder names without need for a scanner. Vets do not always disclose the info from the microchip to just anyone.
But I know these litters will come from irresponsible people who just sell the dogs as easily trained" spaniels" who make good pets
And sell them for a song...

A good Brittany puppy, KC registered, tattoed ( or microchipped)with good breeding whose parents are hip scored, and the breeder abides by the code of ethics, will easily go for £ 500. More depending on bloodlines, whether out of imports, titles of parents, what they have achieved etc etc...
No good degrading the breed, they should be bred for excellence.
Horses for courses, if you just want a " cheap" pet. If you want more guarantees, then pay real money. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for
If you do the job, at least do it properly....

Hi all, I'm still rather concerned about the amount of effort put in to find the OWNERS of this pup. Obviously I don't know the full details, but given that Britts are such a disitnctive breed, why was the dog rehomed? How much effort (with respect to rescus centres) goes into trying to trace owners? Or are there just too many 'lost' dogs out there? sad rgdsGlynis & Fen

Glynis, they may be distinctive but there are quite a few getting " around". Many breed them, irrespectively of what happens if the new owner can cope or not
With no tattoo or chip, ( and sometimes an old address at that) there is no way of tracing the owner
It happened to me: I stumbled across one of my bitches at a Falconry fair. She had been microchipped, but the owner had long since passed her on. ...and disappeared.
She ended up in a rescue centre after the following owner opened the door and let her go. Because she was a working machine, she went.
She was rehomed through a rescue centre to unsuitable owners already having many other breeds.
Because of her distinctive colouring, I was able to recognise her and give my number to the then owner. Needless to say, the bitch came back to me as they could not cope. But a happy ending. She now has the most wonderful home with members of the club. I am eternally grateful to them for taking a wild" monster" who lives to hunt.
Had this bitch been tattoed, I would have known right away. No way would I have known after many years and had she been Orange.
I can tell many more stories like this....

|
I forgot to say....I went to the fair and saw this poor pathetic bitch, thin as a rake, with a sore ear and sad eyes.
I advised on her health and when I eventually got her back having asked for a phone number, it took me many months to get her back to weight. She was very stressed and unable to be let off. This has never happened to me before!!!
She is lucky to have now a secure and fabulous home after at least 3 owners.

Hi Patricia, if I have understood you correctly, are you saying that there is a problem with microchipping and we should tattoo our dogs? rgdsGlynis & Fen

Patricia

Glynis...After a lot of thought, it occured to me that the French are right to tattoo. Speaking to the lady in charge of the National register.
1) the tattoo is visible immediately. You ring the register and both owner and breeder are on the register.
2) You don't need a vet or scanner to see it.
3) it does not travel
4) it is painless and adults can be done. I have all mine done. My friend who has pups( and even microchipped because they are legally docked) had the pups tattoed. If they end up in a rescue centre, he will know immediately.
5) if you show in France they will read the tattoo. and you need the right scanner for the right chip!
I say, responsible breeders should have their pups identified. It may cost a bit more for the pup, but..it is worth it?
And shame on the rescue centres for not contacting breed clubs. Some do. And some insist on knowing where they go . But that is fine...

I will be having both with the new pup i also want finn tattooed
i know a woman who does it for £20 that i think is really cheap !

Many thanks for that advice Patricia, I think I will 'phone the register for advice. As I have said, I would be heartbroken if I lost Fen when I could easily put in place something that identifies her straight away (tho' fingers crossed it will NEVER be used). As ever your comments are really helpful: THANKYOU. rgds Glynis & Fen

No probelms Glynis...It costs about £20 for an adult. For a pup it is £ 7 per pup in a litter. You either charge the owner extra for the tattoo or they have a form of transfer in name.
Mine travels all the way from near Fakenham somewhere, she comes with a colleague, loves the pups ( I saw her at SKC as she has Nova Scotias )shaves the inside ear with tiny clippers -as the pups are done at 6 weeks- cleans it, then the tattoo is applied with either green or black ink. The number for all Brittanys I believe starts with JZ. like sheep, the last numbers will follow with a future litter.
Very simple, not expensive and I feel secure in the fact my pups are identified for ever.

Soooooo - do I blame you for this radioactive pup then
When he got a wet the day after he came home just over a year ago .
Seriously though, both my Brittany boys are tattooed and even Mugi's at 12 is legible.

The ear should stay dry for at least 7/10 days but tests have proven that even if the ink it is washed of soon as a tattoo has been done the holes will still be full of ink and you could still read it, this however is not recommended and the surplus ink wares of quickly.Patricia likes the green ink

Trouble is having a pup who decided to try drowning in a deerhound sized water bowl hence the dye everywhere!!

Well today Christine came with her colleague to duly tattoo my babies...
She is not too close but she is so good, I won't have anyone else!!
And I think we may be on the same wave lenght!
Though my pups will have to be microchipped too( no way they'll get lost now!) I very much prefer the tattoo.
Christine, if anyone is interested would be willing to talk on the tattoo at some future show and tattoo or/ and demonstrate there really is little to it.
Yes, I like Green and my pups now look like little" Incredible hulks"!!!
Also great to talk dogs with like minded people!!

ID Girl - first welcome to the forum - and second - could you explain for us the process. Also how to register dogs already tatooed elswhere.

I don't mind doing a talk on tattooing and even showing hows it is done. One of the questions people ask is 'Does it hurt' the answer is yes of course there is going to be a little pain the clamp has little pins in it which penetrates the ear to people who have a traditional docked breed I see there is no argument for pain and yes I have 2 docked Jack Russell's and 2 docked Rotties.
Pups are like us some will squeal when having their vaccs or chip others not and how many of you have stood on your pup and mad it squeal or shut a paw in a door it is soon forgot after a kiss and a cuddle the difference is a tattoo is done once and its there for life.
Also available now are collars which say Ear Tattooed and the HO tel No and metal signs that tell people that the dogs on your premises are tattooed for security

Thank you Guy for the welcome
First the inner right ear is shaved, this is so the long hairs do not get in the way of the clamp and you are starting with a smooth clean surface, then it is cleaned and wiped over with an antiseptic.Next the clamp is loaded with the appropriate numbers for your dog as there are litter numbers and adult numbers the ear is then put in the clamp flat and the clamp squeezed to put the holes into the ear, next the dye (which is vegetable based) is rubbed into the tiny holes thoroughly and left to dry the excess dye then wares off leaving the dye in the holes revealing the number.
Please explain about dogs tattooed elsewhere, if you have a dog that is tattooed you should have the relevant paperwork with that dog.

I have a dog tatooed in Germany, i emailed the tattoo register earlier this year but never received a reply. I don't have any tattoo papers as the dog is microchipped. Tattoo register is held by the breed club in Germany, maybe a central register as well not sure.

Pm me with his number and I will see what I can do for you
Also forgot to say if you have a litter tattooed your details as a breeder always stay on the database and if one of your pups ever lands in a rescue home you will be notified, or if you suspect one of your pups is in rescue you can prove you are the breeder and get it out of there.
I was notified when a member of the public found a lost toller wandering around that I had bred. The owner was most surprised when I called him to ask had he been reunited with his dog.He lived over 100 miles from me and was very surprised that I knew what had happened. Tattooed dogs get a tag to attache to the collar.

I have imported a few dogs from France and all tattoos are done there obviously.
All I do is ring the Tattoo register and transfered the name on a pink form with my name and address. Though it is not an English tattoo, it is on their record should the dog be lost.
And, like Christine,a pup my friend bred was found wandering. The breeder knew before the owner!( Mind you the owner had not transfred into their name!)

When I have a litter I under take the transfer of the new owner then I know it has been done,if not people tend to forget
