Gas firesDoes anyone have a gas fire, and can they recommend it? I am going to replace this stupid light only electric waste of space and want a gas fire that is efficient, and gives out decent amount of heat. I have a fireplace, so an insert one would be best.

Depends if you are on mains gas or if you are going to have a gas cylinder outside
As you know we are on mains and the fire which we have is brilliant, as you can see when you come down again. we very rarely have to have it on more than the lowest setting and then it's only when Aunt Amy is here because she likes to have her legs on fire

i have to disagree with confucious - its cheaper my way Anyway thanks for asking Jan - its picked its moment to happen - it had all of summer and it chose the weekend of the first meeting Poor Monet - seems pointless time training him up.

Definitely worth a look to see what's on offer or ask if anyone has one they don't need anymore. It's amazing what people are prepared to give away on there. Mind you, you'd need to be sure a gas fire was in good nick.

Eddie, we have a gas fire and backboiler. Coal effect fire, which puts out a very cosy glow on the low setting and an aunt Amy approved leg melter on the high setting We always have loads of hot water and a cosy warm home. We've had this set up for about 15 years now so it may not now be the most cost efficient or eco friendly available.

I wasn't doubting the efficiency of gas fires, but thought that, if getting one secondhand from freecycle (or anywhere else), you'd need to be sure that it was safe to use.

Not just safe to use, it would have to be fitted by a CORGI engineer to be approved and accepted for insurance purposes and other such stuff.

I agree, Eddie, I wouldn't ask for one on there, although my cousin's husband is going to fit it for me and he is a Corgi installer (own heating business) so I guess it might be OK. I just got a knitting machine tonight from Freecycle Clacks.(Clackmannanshire) so hope to be producing woolly jumpers soon (Not not green sheep)
