Greetings from Down-Under

Hi there from us folk upside down!
We (ie Barry and I) have had the pleasure of being "owned" by a little orange and white tearaway called "Spice" since 2000 and she has romped thru our lives like a tornado ever since. We have owned gundogs for over 35 years and in that time, I have never seen a dog capture Barry's heart like this dog has. They adore each other.
She is,in our opinion, a great anmbassador for the breed (which is still quite rare) in this country - not only because of her multiple qualifications, but because she has personality to burn (everyone she meets loves her) and she is faultless as a brood bitch.
Sadly, because of difficulties with a torn uterus after whelping, she will not be able to produce any more progeny, but we are looking forward to bringing on her daughter and in the new year 2007,we look forward to the exciting prospect of an imported dog puppy.
Those of you in the Brittany Club of GB will know we are keen hunting/field trial and show people so we will be joining in with the forum
from time to time as our often hectic lifestyle permits.

Cheers Chris

I see you got it running after all!
I hope the babies are well and you are not suffering too much from lack of sleep.

welcome

Hi Chris and Barry, and Spice and babies
Welcome to the BCGB forum. Glad to hear Mum and babes are doing fine, hope you got Spice out from under the decking!
I have discovered that I can activate people manually so if anyone knows somone who can't get on the forum or it seems to be taking a long time, let me know and I'll fix it.

Under the deck

As a follow up on Anne's comment - yesterday, Spice decided that she needed some time out from the pups,so unbeknown to me, squeezed her way underneath the timber decking outside the family room.
Normally, this little bolt-hole was the domain of our cats, who are already totally put out with the invasion of canines in the house.
I eventually noticed Spice was not around, and found her, nose poking out, from where the cats usually go under.
No amount of cajoling, wheedling, offers of food or growls from me shifted her.In desperation, I rang Barry at work.I held the phone out infront of her and could hear Barry calling and whistling down the phone (heaven knows what his workmates thought of it all)! This did not do any good either, so I rushed inside and quickly counted heads - all the pups were safely inside fast asleep, thank goodness.
In the end, our adult son, Blair lay down on the grass, put his hands in the gap and grabbed as much hair and body as possible and hauled Spice out
She didnt let out a sound but looked very sheepish at both of us and quietly walked inside - as if to say "well, I thought it was a good idea at the time".
Now the cats are REALLY put out because the entrance has been blocked off incase she tries it again. They have been reduced to finding other places for a kitty nap.

The joys of breeding Eh! Chris

mums and pups

I agree - we can never know why they do these odd things.

Freckles took to scraping vigorously anything and everything AFTER her pups were born. I'd have expected it before by way of her looking for a nest for them. She has torn to schreds the two Pedigree blankets I had proudly thrown over my family room armchairs - she had better win some more!
She has also dug up the gravel down to about a foot at the back corner of the shed where there is absolutely no way of getting in to backfill it without moving the shed, and its contents, and the run attached to it.
