The view I am giving is taken from the French way...And since it is a French native, here goes...The trousers are cut off fairly short, no long trailing ones. Usually cut with thinning scissors- My job is groomer-
The hair of the ears can be stripped and the hair behind the ears thinned out too.
The Black usually carry more coat. I thin out the neck hair too. and in between the toes. Never should they be shaved American way.
Regarding the moving, if the dog is obedient Rolling Eyes  he/ she should pay attention. They are normaly free standing.
I find some of the dogs which are worked can find the whole thing a bore and the look in their eyes" Oh, no, not again,, I thought we were off shooting".
As I Judge too, like some on this Forum, I myself don't expect our breed to behave like a robot. They have to behave but they are quite exuberant and some even have a bounce or two! Very Happy
Over to the others now... Wink

learnt something new, trousers cut off fairly short, most working spaniels have long trousers .Is there a reason for this?
Patricia

Christine...They are not a Spaniel Very Happy
Remember the French do the opposite to everything the British do... Rolling Eyes
The trousers are cut short to emphasise the cobbiness of the dog and the squareness of its body. As the tail is docked very short, you trim short below the tail and thin out the trousers.
To trim the ears, you can on an Orange: take a stripping knife and pull from top to bottom the fluffy hairs. Thin behind  the ear excess hair with thinnning scissors. Neck too if too hairy. On Black dogs, the hair can be more abundant, you can thin it again with good thinning scissors. Round up along the ear.
In between the toes, lift the hairy bits, cut with normal scissors.
Or even better...ask Gill to show you, she is a groomer too( sorry Gill Laughing )

two of us having spent only minutes short of an hour picking cleavers from Topaz's ears, chest (looked like a green breastplate), armpits,  in fact any feathery bit.  They only took about ten minutes to get in there  Laughing .  He will soon be getting a 'hunting trim'  no trousers, little feather, reduced chest wig.  Could masqurade as an AB Laughing

In the meantime the suggestion I have had is a ball tipped grooming brush - but is there another or easier way?  No tangle spray? stripping comb? for instance or even a 'non stick teflon spray' before the event?
sallie

Monet is not too hairy - quite thinly coated for a Brittany, he certainly has not got a fluffy bearded chest like a lot of dogs on here - like Guy i want to have Monets feathers on his back legs cut back for the hunting season - no-one around here has ever met a Brittany before and i have never cut backleg feathers - how do i go about it please?
doganjo

Use thinning scissors - preferably the double serrated blades rather than one straight and one serrated.  Go up underneath the feathering and cut, then use a pin brush to remove the cut hair.  Do a little at a time until you have the effect you want.

grooming....

Do you guys know of any good websites on how to do this...
or maybe even a utube video. I cannot get the nerve up to
trim the neck area of my dogs... I would hate to give a bad
haircut.

Any suggestions on how to get my dog groomed for the show scene?

Do you have American type lined dogs or French type lined dogs???
Makes a kind of big difference as to which ones you are showing and in what kind of events.  I have both and so groom them each differently for the venue I am participating in....where in western Can. are you?
There is the BC Brittany club and the BSCofC which has the bulk of their officers in Alberta/Sask.

I have a link to the "American" cliping if you are showing in CKC or AKC.
But if you are showing in CFC (Canine federation of Canada) it is under FCI scenario and minimal triming is the norm just ears, feet and tidying.
So far they only hold event in the eastern parts.
dakotawinters

Hey I am on Vancouver Island. I believe the American clip would most likely be the best... what is the link for that?

How do you tell if your dog is a french Brittany, or an American Brittany?
do they speak french... lol.

Sorry I am newish to the breed (3 years)
Wyngold

Well I would have to say that if you don't know which type you have then most likely you have the "American" version since the French version are advertised and promoted as such.

Here is the Link that Jessica carlson made up for grooming the American Brittany.   She is a breeder and professional show handler and is fast becoming a darn good field handler as well she just won the most recent ABC Nationals with her Dual Ch/Amtr Fld. Ch. that has placed in the ABC 1 hour type championships.
