Mugi

Grumpy soldier

Mugi is not a happy bunny Laughing .

Today was booster time so off we went - STARVED!! My vets offer blood screening to older dogs and as I know Mugi has Renal and Liver Failure this is a good way of monitoring how things are going. Missing breakfast however was not appreciated!!!

Well, he weighs exactly 18kg, eyes, ears, teeth and general health good. His incontinence is an issue so he is having a months trial of Propalin (don't tell him it is usually used on GIRLS Embarassed ) because we then have a dilemma.

I don't know if any of you heard him coughing at City of B'ham. Tis embarrassing cos people think he has KC but in fact it is his heart Sad , his murmur is worse and he has congestion on the left side so the cough is him decongesting his lungs. He could have an x-ray but as that means a sedate I am not sure it is worthwhile, the reason for x-ray would be to determine the best pills to manage his heart but from clinical signs we are looking at diuretics Shocked .

Now already Mugi is wetting pretty much every day so the thought of him on diuretics is pretty daunting but obviously his comfort comes first. Hence seeing if Propalin helps his control which will make it easier for us both as he doesn't like weeing indoors.

I am currently leaning towards 'just' starting diuretics and seeing if symptoms improve rather than going for the x-rays. I may be looking into doggy Tena pads soon Rolling Eyes  Wink .

My vet is amazed though at his exercise tolerance, he was asking how much he had slowed down and my answer had to be, hardly at all although he does sleep deeper when in his crate after a run.

Diuretics are hard as it makes them wee such a lot...
I had a Bouvier bitch who sadly had cardiomyopathy at 6 ...She had fluid on the lungs and the vet gave her diuretics. Poor thing was so embarrassed, she used to flood the floor. She coughed quite a bit and had to be PTS as she would no longer run with the Brits, which was her passion.
Life is so unfair at times...I still felt privileged to have owned such a fantastic bitch and had those 6 years with her.  Crying or Very sad

Our first Wei suffered heart problems towards the end of his life, but he was so embarrassed when the vet put him on diuretics and he was peeing everywhere, we had to take him off them again  Embarassed

Hope the propalin does the trick for Mugi.

Got Mugi's liver and kidney tests back yesterday and I am happy to report that his liver and kidney problems have not deteriorated over the last year - yippee!!

For him it means he can continue to eat what he enjoys (as opposed to a prescription diet) and it also means that when I do pop him on heart meds there will be no contra-indications to take into account.

Propalin is helping his dribbling incontinence I think but is not having any impact on the flooding so I doubt I will continue at the end of the month. I am looking at doggy nappies if we start diuretic treatment.

Yesterday he had only one point where he was a tad 'blue' and that was after he had completed a really good hunt through asparagus for about 30 mins at high speed, a short rest and he was up ready for the next drive so I think I will hold off treatment a while longer unless he seems distressed.

Excellent news Sue and Mugi  Very Happy

In America they use belly bands for male dogs that 'drip' might be worth looking into Sue.
