help - monet has forgotten recall!

Hi

Has anyone got any good ideas on how to stop Monet going deaf and not coming back - in the house and the back yard his recall is fantastic, however outside it has gone from bad to worse. When outside on a long lead in the park or woods he comes back...as good as gold, but once off no chance, today i even resulted to screaming his name as i chased him around the park, every time i got close he ran away...one hour later and soaking wet i caught him. By the way i have also tried the walk away in the opposite direction and still no chance, he has no separation anxiety!! Please help. Also i cannot keep him on the lead for too long as i have ripped the muscle in my right arm, making it painful to walk an active Brittany.

Hi - I do symapathise as I am trying to keep on top of exercising 3 dogs and fielding a Brittany pup with one arm in a plaster at a very weird angle!

Have you tried a Dogmatic for walking - IMHO the best headcollar out there, not a recall answer but perhaps a help.

Recall - sadly I don't know a quick fix on that one as somehow you have to be more interesting than hunting and have that respect there too - not easy once dog has learned you have a weakness.

With my lads I have one damaged goods who may well kill himself but he needs freedom too so we work through compromise. My older Brittany has the most fab recall and it is all down to his previous owners and his dependence on me when his world turned upside down at a very mature age - I used his anxiety to my ends in this respect and now have a dog who truly wants to be with me.

My hound I worked hard to get a dog with a good recall and need to work with me as I have a dog from strong coursing lines living in an semi-urban existence, I achieved this mainly by only feeding him through treats while he was out. He is raw fed so his meals came as chunks of heart etc when he was recalled. He got all his food on his walk so was quite keen to stay close.

My baby Brittany is already learning that Mum is full off nice things although he does get most of his meals fed at regular times. I have access to some land that is only accessible to myself and a friend with a fully vaccinated dog and Chase is learning to stay close and recall while he is still needy. I am not sure how this will progress as Mr Independant emerges but he has a lovely long line ready when he is big enough to drag it Laughing .

I hope your arm recovers well and that Monet isn't too naughty for you.

Sallie you could try putting a good length of light rope around his neck. Be sneaky about taking it off and puttin it on. Let him hunt out, if he makes a bolt for it just step on the rope, call then hawl him in. If you think he is wary of the rope let him tear away until he gets a bit of confidence in himself. Then when he makes a bolt for it do the same. Always roar at him when he struggles to get away and firm praise when he comes in. It really does help to crouch to encourage them to come back in close. Keep at it but don't use the rope every time. He should think that somehow at a distance you still have a physical control over him. As he gets better at returning you should still use the cord method as a reminder now and again that you have supreme control. I know it may be difficult to get the ground but also the jump from yard to wide open space might be too much, so if you could find somewhere enclosed thats larger than your yard, where you have half a chance of hunting him down if he bolts. Work him at this before the wide open spaces.
I also tend to keep my dogs hunting within a certain distance from me so when they get used to it they will look back and expect a recall.
Hope this helps some.

I found that my dogs were getting sore necks so I now use a harness in conjunction with the long line. Otherwise I agree with everything else. Too big a step from home enclosed area to wide open space. I'm lucky that I have my own fields and a chicken pen I can graduate to from the garden then on to the field.
Extra high value treats will work if he likes his food. His Mum is daft about freshly cooked chicken, really crispy bacon. I also taught her to stop on the whistle as soon as I brought her home, as she obviously hadn't been before. But she was very scaredy at first so maybe she was more likely to respond to me.
Good luck - it's a Brittany thing I'm afraid! Tell him his Mum will sort him out if he doesn't behave Wink

Tache

We had a problem with this and at times it still happens but rarely now,it is a battle of wills! Evil or Very Mad A pocket full of salami on an empty stomache does it for Tache, she also responds much better to the whistle.I must admit she will always respond within seconds to the whistle normally stopping, but she does have her moments! Rolling Eyes Crouching down and lots of praise as written above also helps!

thanks - monet loves salami!! Today whilst out with the salami - monet kept coming back to the whistle, he even kept coming back without the need to whistle Very Happy
