Help PleaseA short time ago a committee member had a fab suggestion of putting together a newsletter to be sent out reflecting the working activities etc for our breed as run by the BCGB. To make it interesting we want to add some stories, tips etc etc. I am trying to pull stuff together now so dates for the season can be out in the open ASAP.
In no way is this trying to replace the fab club newsletter but just trying to get info out to our members in a timely way for the season. So planning a summer edition out ASAP to give people an idea of what is on offer, and a second editition at the end of the season to round up results, stories of non competing working dogs etc.
At the moment I am looking at an A4 format of one or two sheets and so it is not just a 'Sue has done' .... I would be grateful if people can send my any bits of info about working with their dogs, training tips etc. Doesn't need to be essays and if you have pics all the better as there will be space for a few to make it interesting.
Thanks in anticipation, lets hope I can get it off the ground!

Can this not be incorporated into the main newsletters? Gay sometimes has difficulty getting articles for it. Would a simple diary not be sufficient for the working season? Gay also has a 'dates for your diary' section, where all the Field Trials, Tests and SPTs can go so people have enough notice. We don't really want to duplicate or dilute, and the newsletter is fantastic as it is and covers all aspects of our breed. In principle it sounds a good idea but seems to me that we should try to keep it together as one unit. JMHO

The problem is Annie, we don't have confirmation of dates in time for the deadline for the summer newsletter. This means that some of the dates will not be published until entries have already passed if we wait for the next newsletter.
In the time I have been helping John I have heard a fair bit of criticism about how poorly we advertise our events! So knowing that not everyone has access to the internet we need to find another way of getting this info out.
Yes I could just compile a dry diary but wanted to expand the idea a little. We are also VERY lacking in info for Game Fairs etc when you look at what is on offer from many of the other (ok probably bigger too) clubs and while we couln't use our main newsletter as handouts a small working orientated newsletter would give some info to be shared out.

Ah, I see what you're getting at now. Yes, makes sense. What about scanning through the Training diaries section on here to start you off? Bound to be some tips in there when folk ask questions - why does my dog do this for example? Bill's answers are usually pretty good

Way, way back, when I first joined the club, I seem to remember there were boxes to tick if you were particularly interested in certain activities. A ticked box would get you a newsheet about upcoming events for your indicated interests. Not detracting from Sue's idea in any way, just saying it worked before, so no reason for it not to again

For those members who circle their main interests it is still recorded on the database but recently quite a few application forms have come through without the second page so no main interests indicated. I still give people the old form with everything on the first page.

Lin, I was thinking of adding a slip to return to indicate if you still wanted to receive the working info. But then thought that for some people, like me ....... I bet I never ticked working as an interest on my membership form - cos at the point I joined it wasn't .
Jan, Barbara means the Membership Database as opposed to the Breed Database.

I like the idea Sue. If you're sending out a return slip would it be worth asking people how they would like to receive the working newsletter?
I'd be happy to receive it electronically, to save paper and postage costs, same goes for the club newsletter, but that may be too awkward to set up this late in the day.

Quite right Sue, you circled 'family Pet' & 'Agility'
I will update the database to include Field Trials & Gundog Work.
If anyone else would like me to check theirs just let me know.

I can't remember what I put it's so long ago - Yes, I REALLY am that old But Agility/Pet/Show//Gundog work/Field Trials would appear to fit the bill nowadays.

Everything is ticked for you Annie because you wanted all information posted to you.
The headings are:- Show, Field, Obedience, Agility, Falconry

Sounds good Barbara but (and I'm not blaming anyone just asking the question) is the information ever used?
I'm just reminded of a saying, "There's nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which need not be done at all"

Yes John but before I was Membership Secretary. I believe information on individual areas was only sent to those who expressed an interest.

Perhaps Sue you should put something about opting to receive as pdf saving the club 60p in postage and envelope (or whatever the cost is)

Not sure what I put when I joined but, whatever it was, you can now tick all the boxes except falconry:twisted:
