Help!!My dog is 1 year old and has sporadic, but often bouts of diarrhoea and terrible wind. He has been checked for every illness under the sun - costing me hundred of pounds in vets bills. Nothing is found even when tests are sent to America for analysis! He is healthy otherwise but the cost of this and the fact that sometimes he cannot be walked due to the severity of his illness is causing us to tear our hair out!!
It is getting to the stage where we feel we cannot cope with him
Can anyone help???
Has anyone experianced this ??

What are you feeding him? Including treats and any extras

If I feed Ellie anything with gluten in it we get that problem.

i am feeding him with Chappie, but we have tried Wainwrights, and Science Plan and otgher dried complete foods. He does have treats and bono biscuits in the day - do you think this may be the problem??
The vet suggested chappie and it seemed to work, but only for a while, then we were back to square one

Try a gluten free diet and use some of it for the titbits as lots of these treat type things have sugar in them and, according to this weeks dog paper, sugar upsets a lot of dogs. Ghillie used to have sporadic periods where she would pass blood in her poop....since I have been feeding Purina this has not happened. Some foods have lots of colouring in them as well [and this includes treats] so that may be part of the problem. Try a food with fish in it and check the contents before buying for those hidden extras......try a small 3kg bag to start so you don't waste your money if he doesn't like it.

What I would suggest first and foremost is to get his poor stomach and guts to settle...
1) Starve for 24 hours
2) Re-introduce food - small portions initially (maybe split his meal into two), e.g. some well cooked chicken breast and rice (a very bland and easily digested meal) - for a day or two.
3) Some live yoghurt (good bacteria!) to line the stomach - just a couple of dessert spoons in with his food
Then, to go back to dog food over approx 7 days (gradually increasing the amount)...
With several success stories from feeding the following, even though it's slightly more pricey than your average diet, (though less expensive than vets bills and prescription diets!), I would try Pro Plan Salmon & Rice.
Not just because I work for Purina, but because I have seen some even worse case scenarios - where it has worked very very well, and the dogs have not looked back.
The Pro Plan Salmon & Rice is actually branded as the "Sensitive" diet - for skin and stomach. It is wheat gluten free, no colourants or artificial preservatives, no soya, no egg, and very limited in ingredients - meaning if it is the diet that is causing these problems, with less ingredients, he is less likely to have such a reaction.
Oh, and I would not feed any other treats or titbits whilst changing the diet, as you need to know if it is the food causing the problems first.
I hope that helps (I worked at a vets for 4 years - so picked up a lot!).

I forgot about the yogurt, use the proper full fat natural greek stuff not the half fat rubbish.
Sorry Patricia I thought the food was Purina, just goes to show nobody reads the bag

Hi Debbie,
You should check out Arden Grange white fish and potato, it has no grains in it including rice which can also be an irritant to a sensitive stomach - other foods to avoid is soya and also lamb. I have done an awful lot of research into manufactured food and Arden Grange comes out one of the best, but every dog is different

When one of my labs had bllody diarrhoea, as well as starving for the time previously suggeted I gave him Rhus tox 6c potentcy 3 times a day (until symptoms stopped) plus slippery elm powder to 'line' the GI tract and slowly introduced bio yoghurt, cottage cheese and then bland food. And yes, pro plan food is VERY good!
