Ideal weight for age of pupHi everyone,
We have a 8 month old pup called Bracken.
We don't and are not planning to work him in the future, he is our pet. We attend obedience classes each week with him.
Tonight our trainer told us in her opinion he is under weight. His current weight is 14kgs. He is fed morning and lunchtime with a total of 230g Beta Adult (maintenance) dry food. This is the recommended quantity stated by the manufacturer. During the day he gets the odd tit bit but not loads.
Our question is what weight should Bracken be? We would welcome any advice.
Thanks,
Chris and Gill

Well Merlin is 8 months and he weighs in at 17.6kilo and here's me trying to get him to eat more. He is on one meal a day now as when he was on two meals he was as picky as all hell. I now have him on Pedigree Advance and he is really doing well [apart from being the Demon from Hell]

PS What is Bracken's breeding etc

Yes, and what height are they both too? Weight is in direct correlation to height in our breed, presuming they have good strong bone density. I would be interested in his breeding too.

OMG - porky is currently weighing in at 19.2 kg at 8 months!!!!
Actually I think Chase is looking a lovely shape at the moment and I don't want him to lose weight, he is bursting with energy but not frenetic. I have no idea what height he is although he is still smaller than Mugi (who weighs in less than him but looks chunkier).
Although this picture is not good quality cos it was foggy it does give an idea of how he is looking at the moment. This was taken last sunday...
...and this one was taken on Oct 24th.
From a comparison point of view he now eats a raw diet so it is hard to judge amounts. Till he was 6 months old he had 2 raw meals and one meal of Purina ProPlan Puppy.

Hi Jan and Annie,
Thanks for your speedy reply. Looks like Bracken will now be getting extra rations from now on. He will be pleased.
Brackens name is Alitalex Cappuccino, his parents are Kenmillone Crakerbox and Fosscott Vivette. Looking at his blood line most are from Fosscott.
He is a tri colour natural bob tail. He is approx. 51cm tall.
He walks well off the lead but has a habit of pulling while on the lead. Whenever we are out with him we are often asked about him. Most people who ask have never heard of the Brittany. We are lucky where we live as there are many open fields / woods for him to run free in.
He usually does as he is told, especially if there is a treat!
He live with two cats who are both the boss of him. He sometimes chases them but is never aggresive in the slightest.

They all have a habit of pulling on the lead. I have tried a halti and an easy leader both with varying success. I am giving him 300gram of food per day now as he was a total pain with not liking this and not liking that, now he just gets it and if he don't eat well hard luck Try Bracken on 300/350 grams per day and see how he goes.

Annie,
Quite the opposite, he hates the water, he was only standing in the river because we were both at the other side and he was not happy at been left on that side of the bank.
Do most Brittanys like water? He watches other dogs swimming etc but won't join in.
Jan,
Yes he is from Alex Whittle at Standish.

I have a job to keep Ghill out of water, we took her to France a couple of years ago and she discovered the SEA. Straight out just behond reach and then she swam backwards and forwards so we couldn't get her. Took us ages to get her out. We had to keep her on the lead if we were in a rush as she made a beeline for the water [and still does] I blame her breeders for bringing her up wrong and taking her swimming very young

Just had Merlin's rabies jab done for the pet passport....got him weighed as well. He is now 19.2kg.......an elephant demon he has put on near enough 2kg in two weeks. I thought he wasn't eating enough for his age and so I have been stuffing him with whatever he would eat. He is now on Pedigree Advance and seems to like it, at least he's stuck to it for the last three weeks which is a blooming miracle. I wonder if they level out, weight wise, as they get older [that's if he does get older] otherwise I shall end up with a donkey

Bracken is putting weight on quite quickly. He is now 17Kg! He still looks lean though. He is not a fussy eater. He scoffs his meal down as if there is no tomorrow. He will eat all most anything that is offfered to him including Banana, Apple, Toast, Yoghurt, etc.
Changing the subject, one thing that we have noticed is when we are at obedience classes is he will do anything you tell him to do, but if there isn't a treat, he will just stand there looking at you ignoring the commands. We keep getting into trouble with the trainer if we "bride" him to do as he is told.
Is this a common thing with Brittanys?

YES Also the bit where they will do anything at home but when you get them out and in public.......... Merlin has this habit of sitting with his head back and he looks down his nose at me, I cannot make my mind up whether he is daft, dense or shortsighted or even just having me on [I suspect the last ]
