If it was not for the tattoo...Not so long ago my friend's dog who was rehomed because his owner could not cope with his running off...and came back to his breeder like a bag of bone...This young dog went missing a couple of days ago - from his new home which has over 2 acres of fenced paddock- Somehow the gate was open for a few minutes and the Brit nowhere to be found
The new owners ( whose friends had had a Brit before for 17 years) looked and looked all night frantically. At 6 am they bumped into a farmer who told them that a car had picked up the dog. And gave the registration of the vehicule( clever man )
The owners called to get their dog back but the travellers type people refused to hand the dog back saying they were keeping it. was No attempt had been made to find out whose animal it was by the " kidnappers"
The police was on stand by by then...
Asked to prove it was THEIR dog, the owners said it was microchipped...but also tattoed. The agressive attitude of the thiefs changed somewhat once they were told to look in the ear. The police was ready to act.
IF it had not been for that tattoo.... .....

That settles it for me - mine will be tattooed as soon as I can find someone to do it, and my pups from now on.

Well done Anne...My tattoo lady is really useful. She shows Nova Scotias and a real dog person.
If ever a pup or a dog ended up in a rescue centre, and the owner was too ashamed to say they had parted with it...Whoever finds it can notify the Central register.
If you charge the tattoing fee to the new owners in the price of the pup, it will cost you nothing
Tattooing is automatic in France, but chipping is getting more spread due to the passport. What I like is, you only have to lift the flap of the ear to read it and don't need a scanner.
Andy had all his pups chipped-for obvious reasons- but also tattooed. I think that is very responsible. Should not more breeders identify so even if lost, the dog can be reunited with owner?

Whilst they can be tattooed as a visible sign of registration, who holds a central register of numbers? Catja is tattooed but this is only on her German papers.
Could we encourage someone to come for the TAN day to offer the service?

Patricia

Guy... You only need to go onto the Tattoo register. You CAN transfer your tattoo number into the register, even if it is foreign.
I had done it with Spot when they could not find his chip( by the jugular on French dogs!!! )
I have to do it with Clochette.
I will ask Christine to maybe even speak about tattoing if you like. I am a convert. And I want to know where all my puppies are...all their life.
If only I had known about Keith's bitch before and this method, some of her bad experiences would never have happened.
I was so happy to see her looking well, happy and settled...
So was my daughter who holds a candle for her...

is it part of petlog? do you have a link?

Patricia

Guy, it is nothing to do with Petlog.I have that too when I transfer the chip number for my imports.
The link is www.dog-register.co.uk
It has a list of tattooists. Adults can be done too.
The lady in charge is very helpful I found...

certainly would be a good topic - I would like to get in stuff that will bring back past TAN day participants.

Where are the tattooes placed? I am sure a man I spoke to about pig dogs had his dogs tattooed in the groin as the "holders" are proned to having their ears bitten. What pain killers are used? What instrument is used to do the tattooes?
|
Patricia

Pain killers? Come on...it is over in seconds
I have explained that the tattoo is inside the ear like in France. It is done with pincers. Ink is ruubed in the ear. It is thick. The ear is shaved beforehand with tiny clippers.
For those worried, there is NOTHING to it.
Even if there was( which there is NOT) - to me a dog with a tattoo which I can identify as mine- is worth a few minutes discomfort.

Less discomfort than having a grain of rice inserted under your skin I would think - I wouldn't want that done to me! I wouldn't mind an instant tattoo
|
Patricia
|
I am sure we can arrange that for you Anne. We would not want to lose you
Anyway, that grain of rice made 3 pups bleed...Hummm....cut tails or chips...or...This country is crazy.

Cedar is micro chipped, she didn't even flinch, maybe she's just tough lol I have a tattoo or two, and from the second the needle touched my skin I felt pain.
I'd rather stick with micro-chips for the dogs, Gunner and my other Beagle before have been micro chipped too and I've had no problems.
And as for cutting tails If God had meant Brittanys to have tails they'd be born with them ... opps they are I love my baby girls tail and I think cutting it off/docking it would be a lot more painful than microchipping her

With due respect, that is totally wrong. God did NOT make the dog in all its shapes and forms. WE did. we would all have Dingo looking type dogs or would also resemble Carolina dogs.
How about a tailless Brittany???
I can recount several accounts of chips moving. Even my customer's dog this morning. A lurcher. She had lost it though it was microchipped. By the time she found it through posters, it had cost her £200 in kenelling fees.
Remember, before a pet, this is a gundog. I have had the breed 20 years plus in France previously. I am not new at all this
The French are up in arms about our situation.

If a dog is born without a tail then so be it, if a dog is born with a tail who are we to cut it off? Cedar's tail is beautiful and I wouldn't change it for anything.
Re microchips, I have the vets check mine at each visit to ensure it's still readable. It only takes a few seconds and doesn't cost a thing.

Excuse me???? I have tattooed kid goats and stud calves and it proves a huge discomforture to them. I cannot envisage tattooing an adult dog without some reaction?????

I had Bliss done as an adult when I had her pups done (at about 6 weeks I think, but it's a long time ago and memory fades ). She squealed far more than the pups did - but it may have been more shock and indignation than anything else - knowing what she was like Still that put me off the idea of getting them done other than as baby pups.
I guess there is the danger of someone cutting the ears off to stop identification, but I do feel we were all born with scanners (eyes) to read the tattoo, rather than needing machines like you do with the microchip.
Saying that, Sherry is chipped not tattooed and Ozzy is getting chipped this week.

Thank you, Liz

Ghill is chipped and tatooed and she yelled when both were done...Merlin however, didn't bat an eyelid, but thats men for you

So anything I have written in my previous posts made no difference???...Because of a few seconds discomfort.
Victoria, if you were not so far, I would invite you to watch my dogs being tattoed and see for yourself.
Because of that tattoo, one Brittany was able to be reunited with its owner as it had been stolen. That is worth a bit of discomfort in my view? ???
Had I tattoed my other bitch ( the one I managed to recognise because of her " toast" markings" I would have been able to look in her ear and done something about it right away.
Is this not all about welfare???
My dogs are chipped ( they have to be because they are passported) but they can and do move.
Also, like docking I think some of the British ( not you Eddie!!!)are getting too emotional about the whole thing.
Like you Victoria, we have livestock, sheep -and have had pigs before they lost money- and cattle.
We have just vaccinated and castrated lambs ( with rubber bands) and the same is happening tomorrow with a bull calf. An elastic round his bits.
and because it is the law, 2 huge tags in this 4 day old beast. double tagging for the lambs.
So if that is OK for another baby animal, why ALL this fuss for a puppy
Come back to reality.....

As I am using a computer from hell AKA a touch screen, pay through the nose hospital patient thing (and you are typing above your head which is frankly weird ) I have to be brief.
I have two brittanys and both have tattoo's, Mugi is nearly 12 but his is clear, Chase is also easy to read. All bar Chase have microchips and he will be done when he is hip-scored so he can start his passport. Any future dogs (pups or adult) will definitely be tattooed in addition to the chip as it is sooooooo easily seen and a quick confirmation that the dog is mine.
Having misplaced my spaniel twice now I feel any help in reuniting us is a small price to pay, even if it is not comfortable in the short-term for the dog.
As for chipping, if I don't need to chip a pup then I will do as I have with Chase and wait for maturity to try to reduce the risk of migration.

Hope everything is going OK Sue???These hospitals are a racket, aren't they??? Hope you are soon sorted.
So, you're off abroad to show he??? Good on you...
I am glad I sold you this pup ( bet you're not ) so great to keep up with all his antics.
All the best Sue. we're thinking of you...

I am doing fine thanks, histology is back and I should be safe from further spread I get my reconstruction tomorrow.
As for showing abroad, I am keeping options open but also I like holidays in France and already take some dogs so why not the bouncy one .

Are you getting a boob job and other stuff while you are there When last I went into hospital I asked then to take a bit off the belly but they said they didn't have time I didn't ask what they meant by that just in case I didn't like the answer

Glad to hear all is going well, Sue.
Ozzy was chipped last night and never turned a hair. I was a bit worried as the girl who did it has only just been trained so isn't very experienced at chipping. However it probably helped that Ozzy knows her (her mum takes our training classes). She was very pleased with the way he behaved as she'd just been quite badly bitten chipping a Westie

Do not patronise me or ever again suggest to me to 'come back to reality'...I simply asked how the process went having never had a dog tattooed...I would have thought that a reasonable set of questions...

for your information, that was directed at anyone who thinks tattoing might be painful...
And only illustrating that a lot of the time, people are too soft when there is no need...
