Mugi

In the right place??

I have been offered rearing facilities for Quail to train Mugi on but I was then asked what 'breed' I want and I have no idea. Oh being a novice at this game is soooooo humiliating at times. Any thoughts please???

Nothing is humiliating if you are learning. Ask anything on here - NOT ONE person will nor should make you feel humiliated. I've had this breed for 25 years and am only now getting involved with what they are best at - working. Wish I had started years ago. I'm learning fast though(even at my geriatric stage in my life Laughing ).
Quail are fine, but they aren't indigenous to the UK so you have to be careful about making sure you get them back. I know there are some wild ones about but the authorities aren't that happy about it. (the eggs are fantastic though) I have been offered some baby partridge which I will put in with my ducks and hens - need to get a net over the run first so they can't escape. Apparently they imprint on the chickens and come back at night through an opening in the chicken run big enough for partridge but not for hens. Foxes aren't usually a problem here (we do have quite a lot of them) as my BIG HESSIE(GWP) runs around and checks everything last thing at night. Wink

You might want to check out Derry Argue's video Game for Bird dogs which deals with this subject, primarily using Bobwhite quail. Although he trains setters and pointers there is a lot of useful information in all of his videos and especially his book on the pointing instinct. You can get fertile quail eggs from e-bay, last year a guy from NI was selling Bobwhite eggs - I havn't checked recently. Derry's use of dizzied pigeons is excellent - I heartily recommend that you check it out.
Hope this helps
