Mugi

Is it a good idea???Mugi and I have been invited to go rough shooting (rabbit and pigeon) and as I am sure at his age he is unlikely to ever go out for a more formal day shooting I am seriously considering doing this. Mugi is not keen on retrieving cold game or dummies but if anything sparks him it would be a fur dummy so I have no idea what he would do with warm game. He is good off-lead, very responsive and stops to shot. The person shooting is also training his working ESS so is very tolerant.
If we bear in mind that Mugi is a 10.5 yr old novice and he is not going to be worked or compete formally does anyone have any thoughts as to why I shouldn't take up this offer?
Also, on the thought of a Game Licence?? Do I need one for rabbit or pigeon?? See, not only is Mugi a total novice but so am I .

Just go for it, Sue amd Mugi. You will both enjoy it and your friend should have the game licence if he is shooting - as far as my knowledge goes anyway. Perhaps Guy can help?

You don't need a game license for rabbits or pigeons Sue as they are not classed as game. You will find a flip side to your Brittany as his instinct takes over when he starts to hunt. I hope he puts a few rabbits in the bag for you. Best of luck.

have a good day out.
Don't forget you can always put Mugi on a lead.
As you are rough shooting with a friend you bothe will be able to set the pace.
The only thing i would avoid is letting the two of them work together.

Well Mugi and I are going to go for it just as soon as my op is far enough down the line to not hurt like ****!!
TBH I think the friend wants Mugi to go because he feels Mugi is more steady than his youngster and he is keen to get out. Dexter is a nice dog but very young and he really needs a bit more work before he can be worked IMHO.
Guy, yep lead will be in use till I see how he is .

I have a very good little dog!!! His first time out with a shotgun and although we found nothing for him to hunt he was great with the gun. He sat steadily while both barrels were fired by his side (off-lead), he walked by my side off lead and he recalled beautifully. He is also learning to carry his soft toy puppy (don't laugh it is a means to an end) all over the fields without mouthing/dropping.
Hopefully we will be off out again at the weekend with more luck.

Well done, I hope you get a point this weekend Sue. You will be hooked hunting your Brittany and counting down the days until the shooting seasons open again like the rest of us!
