Mugi

Laryngeal Paralysis

A friend from another forum has suggested this as a possibility for what is wrong with Mugi and certainly the symptoms fit. Does anyone have any experience of it in the breed? It can be picked up as an older dog issue as opposed to being breed specific and I know the vocal cords are part of what Mugi is having checked out on Friday as he was gagging when Ken tried to look at them today when he was awake.

My vet is great as he is not Brittany savvy so he is open to learning anything more about them, he has already researched if the breed if prone to any specific heart issues when he knew Mugi was coming in.

Seems to be a pretty common disorder of late being reported in older Brittanys in the US.

Sometimes it gets confused with laryngial spasms which are sometimes due to dry throat or a slightly elongated soft pallet causing that sucking
behavior in some dogs, or from an allergy that causes just enough swelling to cause a throat irritation.

Thanks so much - I am not thrilled with it as a possible diagnosis in the one sense as I can't decide on letting him go through surgery but if it will help him then perhaps I owe it to him to try.

An AB that I bred developed it when he entered his 14th year.
in everyday norms he was fine...but anythime he went to the groomers
or his environment changed he would stress and hypervent and collapse.

They tried steriods with minimal success.

It is also associated with one of the trigeminal nerves that either gets damaged or de-mylenates with age.

It does seems to affect a few dogs when they get past 14 so it is often considered an old dog syndrome.    Yet there are many dogs who get to be 16-17 that also never have such issues either.

No one knows for sure but now I pretty much tell my puppy folkis when they contact with issues of any sort to submitt DNA with a note on the Vets diagnosis to the free DNA database at UC Davis for Brittanys.
Someday science willl have identified these "issues" and it could benefit Medical research down the road.

Well the good news is that this isn't his problem.
