Lick sores???What do you use on your dogs when they are licking??
Chase has a couple of thorn injuries that are bugging him, I have had a WSS who is very prone to pyoderma so have a number of remedies ranging from Hyperical Cream, Dermisol Cream, Fuciderm Gel, Silicea homeopathic tabs and Sudocrem. I am going to try a combi of Silicea and Dermisol as my first line of defence as I think there are at least a couple of thorns under his skin.
Does anyone have any other remedies that they swear by for these type of irritations? I hasten to add he will go to the vet if he doesn't find relief but most of what is in my treatment box is stuff I have been prescribed by the vet (I have been prescribed stuff to have ready for Fred if his skin flares over holidays so it is fresh not left-overs).

I assume these thorns are pretty deep seated and can't be removed with ordinary tweezers. I bought a pair of extremely fine ones for crafting and they are ideal for this sort of thing - even removed a skelf from my own finger painlessly. I have to admit my standys are two creams for degrees of irritation, one used to be called vetsovate, don't have any just now and can't remember what t was called - magic cream was it's nick name. The other, and first port of call, is plain old savlon!
Licking is a bit more difficult as they will immediately lick off whatever you put on it, even mustard! I usually put on a cover of some sort and dare them to remove it, which is fine if you are with them all the time, but the command doesn't seem to be obeyed if you aren't in the room.
No ideas other than that. Sorry

Hi Annie
Yep - not thorns that can be lifted easily. One feels like there is a teeny something under the skin, the other I am unsure if he just has an irritating scratch as I can't feel anything but it is a weal so maybe there is something in there. I use artery forceps for removing stuff I can snag them - perk of the job that in days long gone now we could acquire stuff with impugnity .
He is not worrying either spot all the time but certainly the weal is very easy for him to lick so he could make it sore very quickly if he is anything like his welshie 'brother'.
The one cream you mention is probably a steroid based thing like betnovate - great for dermatitis or eczema type skin problems?

Tea tree should keep the entry open whilst also keeping the area clean. Removal of thorn is another matter. If you have a calm, co-operative (or restrainable) patient, careful manipulation can extract the thorn, then, personally, I would use lavendar as a further antiseptic and also to aid healing. BUT, we are dealing with a 2 year old Britboy here Copper had a nasty puncture wound to the back of the neck (courtesy of Zac) which was treated this way. None of mine have ever licked tea tree or lavendar off treated areas.

I am a seriously hated being...................he is lying in his crate with his head turned away from me, he is shivering and when I do get him to look at me he is soooo sad looking. I have never had a dog hate the lampshade this much but try explaining to him it is for his own good!! I sincerely hope the hibiscrub and cream do the trick quickly as this is going to be hard for us all as he obviously feels vulnerable round the other boys.

Any ideas for an itchy dog? No beasties that I can see, he's had a good bath, changed his bedding, also did same with Hester and have kept him away from the girls in case it's out in the kennel but none of them are scratching - only him. Hasn't been among nettles that I know of. even just brushing his back sets him off. But he doesn't go around scratching all the time - he's lying asleep at my feet now.

Any one tried bitter apple spray to stop licking / chewing ?
Itchy - have you changed your soap powder recently? Or how about salmon oil supplement?

I have never found Bitter Apple effective - having Freddy who flares with Pyoderma often I think I have tried everything to stop licking and With Chase I have just resorted to the only effective method I know - ensure tongue can't reach skin..... he hates it but after 48 hrs the area is slowly looking better.
Itching - err I would mention Sarcoptic Mange. I was horrified when Brice was treated and although his blood tests were inconclusive and he was not as itchy as the vet would have expected the treatment (Spot-On Advocate) worked and so it is worth considering.

What do I look for? And where could he have got it from? Haven't changed washing powder. the only thing I can think of is our burn has been polluted with grey water - still is. Tried keeping him out of it to no avail and it has had no effect on any of the girls - but he is more sensitive than them anyway. I'm about to put him onto Challenge Salmon and potato and upped the oil in his diet too. Antihistamine stops the itching. If no improvement by weekend I'll see the vet.

The mites are too small to be seen Annie but if he is rubbing in armpits and belly then it is worth a thought. SM can be picked up from foxes, rabbits and .............. humans as it is Scabies .
Brice thinned his hair in his armpits.
Do you have Thornit? If so you could try popping some into a plastic bag and dipping his paws in to give a light dusting as that also can help a mite issue.
Of course saps are rising, nettles are tender and he could be irritated by a spring sap that will pass soon.
My boys love Challenge and are doing well on it, good value and it is great to have a single food that all can eat. I still feed some raw but poops are fine from all and no gassy bellies which is a bonus.

Antihistamine certainly worked - he hasn't scratched all day. No redness or loss of hair under his armpits and no change in training responses this afternoon - quick whistle sits, and would you believe it - looking at me. Don't they just LOVE to prove you wrong! I won't believe that we've cracked it just yet though.
