loosing fur under the neck Hiya guys,
dont know if anyone can help but ive noticed for months now that archie has been loosing his fur under his neck, its also quite rashy and can get quite red, we've tried leaving his collar off but obviously he wears it whilst out walking, the hair doesnt seem to want to grow back and it seems to be getting worse, any suggestions as to what we could do
thankyou

What type of collar is he wearing ie leather, nylon etc? If it's leather he could be allergic to it.

Hi Olivia
Have you tried a Halti or a harness, to give him a break from the collar?

Hiya sallie, thanks for the suggestion it is a possibility, although we flea him regularly and we have already been to the vets before about it but mites were never mentioned, will consider revisiting though
thanks

Hiya, he has always worn a nylon collar, which he seems fairly comfortable with, i dont know if he could be allergic to the nylon though, i dont think it explains why hes got a small area on his stomach thats bald though, cause that can get quite rashy too

Hiya John
well starting from yesterday he no longer has the lead attatched to his collar weve started up using his harness again but kept his collar on when we walk him, we will give the harness a good try though and see what happens
thanks

When we first looked after Ellie she had this problem. Her collar - leather was very snug, like a greyhound's - the buckle and dog tag had always been riding in the same place.
I have observed some chain collars, the smaller linked ones seem to do this more, compounded with constantly 'working' them in an effort to get the dog to stay at heel. The links trap a hair and the hair is plucked out when the chain is tightened.
It might also be worth looking at diet. As Ellie also came with areas of missing fur on the top of her head with small dried scabs, Much money at the vets and topical creams later I changed her diet. Removing any wheat or rice products. Whilst I don't suggest this is the answer for you, it might be worth consideration.

Hi Cedar gets this too and the vet said it was a mite and gave me some drops quite like frontline. This seemed to clear it up, until Crufts when I put her on a chain again and it flared up. In Cedar's case I think it's the chain collar and I'm going to invest in a half coke, leather or nylon to see if that sorts it out.

The problem with half chokes is they need to fit well to start with otherwise they have no effect when in use. If you can get it over a Brittanys head then it will not work as a choke. There are half chokes with quick release buckles available - but very hard to find. I tracked one down at Tony Orchards Dog Training Shop in Oxfordshire.

Mine don't wear collars at home, and when out walking they wear their collars and tags but I use a rope slip lead for control. No problem with hair loss on any of them.

well we do have a check chain but we dont use it because archie finds a way to slip out of it, as for his diet i dont think thats the problem, we spoke to the vet before and he seems to just think it could be his collar or possibly a skin complaint.
were going to give it a good go at keeping the collar off as much as possible and using his harness, since weve been trying this he hasnt had any redness or rash so hopefully it will do the trick thanks for everyone help so far, we will see what happens
