Lost - but not with a Brittany aroundWell Mugi got a huge gold star today. This little dog is really coming into his own on the shoot.
Today, after we had done some really nice hunting, we had had to sit quietly behind a gun and Mugi was marking the birds as they dropped although he wasn't allowed to pick up as there were plenty of picking up dogs today .
First drive after lunch we were walking back from where our beating line had finished, the shoot owner, 2 guns and 2 picking up handlers with 5 dogs were searching for a lost bird. Mugi and I were ambling along when Mr Mugi went very alert on the hedge line, a really solid point and there at the base of the thorn hedge was a bird, somewhat dead - I sat him and inserted arm into hedge and retrieved the bird myself, a lovely plump partridge in beautiful condition. Mugi got himself a pat on the back and a load of praise. For an untrained dog who has now only been out working 6 times it is amazing to see how he is blossoming.

Nice one Mugi. Don't know what your pickers up are like, but on our shoot if their dog doesn't trip over the bird or can't be directed onto it they'd never find anything

I think those are the best shoots to be on John, at least they are fun days out and you and the dog get to enjoy yourselves

True, if it wasn't for the chance to laugh at the pickers up and guns beating would be boring

I know the feeling, especially when the Ghilldog takes off after a bird.....talk about mortified She is, at the moment, the only dog on our beating line so she is forgiven anything, not so her owner, she gets the flak Mind you she still gets invited back as she gets more birds up that would be missed if she wasn't there. Worth £20 of anyone's money. I just wish that I got her £20 as well

Perhaps there should be an award for the dog/bitch that did the most to promote the breed. Given out once a year at one of the club shows?
My vote goes to Mugi.

Mugi is modestly blushing Guy.
If the club would be interested though 'Mugi' would consider donating a special trophy for the best rescue/rehome at one of the shows if a class was allowed to opened up for non-registered dogs, like a companion show class?? Not sure if such a thing would be allowed but as I am so lucky to have his papers and I know some people aren't able to trace the origin of their dog it might be a way of including such dogs in the spirit of the showing side?????

I am behind you on that one _ i suggested the same in Barleys name but it appears it is a no go - at its simplest there is a problem about non pedigree dogs and the KC and champ shows.
But - how about something on Saturday - the working day - along the lines of village fete exemption show?

I guess the main problem I forsee there would be the amount of work needed to make it worthwhile in amongst all the other things that are going on. For instance Liz only had 3 dogs doing their Bronze but there was still alot of work involved and potentially we are not talking huge numbers of entrants, certainly there are some rescues that can enter the show legitimately as we know.
So as the next thought - if there was an expanded parade of rescues at the Champ Show 'Mugi' could sponsor Rescue Rosettes for the appropriate dogs but I guess again they need to be entered NFC which could cause problems with the KC.
I would like to donate something to the club from Mugi as he is so special and has introduced me to a great breed so it would be fitting but trying to link that into his rehome status is problematical .
Although Mugi is hugely flattered by your idea about promoting the breed I feel that is somewhat subjective. Mugi has a huge personality and he makes friends wherever he goes but there are many dogs that don't have the opportunities he has to get out and about but who, given the chance would shine as well but they are first and foremost loved pets. I would hate to be the panel trying to judge which dog had promoted the breed best, as you would have to consider all aspects of showing, trialling etc plus the dogs who are at the ground floor level just going about their job but not in the limelight either cos they just 'do it' or they don't have a pushy parent who boasts of their slightest sucess (note to self to tone down boasts!!).
There must be a way to acknowledge that rescue/rehome dogs are great and as Mugi is proof of - 'mature' dogs can be taught new tricks, as long as the instinctual behaviour is present and the dog is motivated correctly.
My next thought then would be whether an award could be given to the rescue/rehome dog 'improving' best through the club training sessions awarded by consensus of the trainers and awarded at the Champ Show?? So like a points system if the owners were interested in registering their dogs. Some years I guess it would not be awarded but we know there are people learning about the breed through rescue dogs as their start point not just me.

Not just champs shows - the only shows where pedigree but non registered dogs can be shown are Companion ones (previous Exemption Shows)
We had a non-competitive parade of rehomes last time - perhaps we could have an award/certificate for each one that takes part? We could certainly have some sort of competition on the working day, but they might take part in the events that day anyway.

We kind of cross-posted Annie.
If we were allowed a non-registered dog parade of rescues at the Champ Weekend then Mugi would be very happy to sponsor rosettes for the event. If the club can confirm if this is feasible then I am happy to undertake to provide rosettes for a period of years (in his name) to be specified at a later date. I would not get them year specific so could run them on to ensure peeps got a rosette if they entered last minute.

This years Le Weekend working day could be quite a cracker.
TAN and super TAN
Companion dog show
Brittany golf - as born on working HPRs
An agility course?? I could bring up some agility bases
Another idea that came to mind would be an art show - there have been several bits and pieces shared on various forums - i am sure many of us have a number of artefacts that could together make quite a display.
Perhaps we should split this off this thread and create anew one?

We can certainly have a parade - we did it in October! Rosettes would be very nice and quite acceptable I think, but run it past Paul first please.
I'm on the phone to Jan right now - her friend makes rosettes and if you are at Coventry or LKA she will give you a catallogue.
