lost microchipToday, it is a horrible day and it is pouring with rain...
I should be vaccinating my sheep, but..it will wait til the morning.
Instead I went to see my friend's 10 week old pups... Athos is a grand dad!
As they work their dogs, like we do, they were duly docked ( legally of course) and duly microchipped.
Only one snag...The chip is inserted at 8 weeks. usual place. But one owner rang to say that when being vaccinated, the chip was...nowhere to be found!!! Where it is, God only knows
So, I guess more paperwork and another chip?
If it had been tattooed, none of this would have happened.
This law is made by as...s..and trust some British to abide by it all...

Sorry Patricia. As an Englishman, there are some things I will not tolerate. Surely, although the law has ben referred to as an ass, you mean it is made by ar..s. Can't stand these americanisms

Hi Eddie...You can't expect my mastering of the English language to be perfect
Apologies for the Americanism, I don't like it either!!!
I am mad that a little pup has to have a b....y big needle just to identify it because of some " Do gooders" who have not got a clue about dogs.
Don't worry, they are in France too
Over there they treat the shooting people as alcholics and murderers. Probably the type to buy their meat in little cellophane bags without any idea where it comes from
Don't worry, you British are wonderful!!!

Patricia (and everybody else)
If ever I say anything which could possibly be interpreted as being offensive or personally critical, please read again, as I would never intend to be either.
I must say that I am completely confused about microchips and tattoos. I would assume that each carries a code which could then be referenced against a database of some sort. As you correctly point out, a tattoo can be read without any equipment whereas a microchip requires some sort of equipment to recognise it.
I have worked in a technical environment for the whole of my working life and am constantly amazed by the fact that people will opt for the latest technology whether or not it is appropriate, simply because it is new technology. Sometimes, a pen and paper can't be bettered.
Could anybody give a good account of the way in which microchipping and tattooing work (who holds the records, how would those reading access those records etc)?
Patricia, your command of English is much better than many people who have lived from birth in this country ( I am sure that many people could find grammatical and spelling errors in this post which would embarrass me greatly). I would never find fault with your English, but I have a childishly impish nature which I find hard to suppress

All my dogs have been microchipped, the numbers are recorded on one of several central databases, the UK ones happen to be on 'petlog' which seems to be linked to the KC. Catja is on a European one (so not going to be much use over here) I need an access code to change the address details - which I don't have.
I understand most microchips are of a standard type now so can be read by nearly all equipment, you will after all have a record of the number so you can prove the dog is yours - the database bit just means someone can trace the ownership for themselves.
Tattoo - here again the German one is recorded by the German Breed Club and not centrally - Patricia has put a link up for a UK register. Her number is made up of the sequential number of her birth and the year of birth (01507- so she was the 15th pup registered in 2007); but even in Germany you would have to recognise her as a Brittany to get to any records!
As a point of interest all their microchips were put in between the shoulder blades and now somewhere else. One at the elbow which I find a little concerning. I read somewhere that the chips should be put into the muscle rather than just under the skin.

It's OK Eddie
French sense of humour differs from English! My husband laughs like a drain at some comedians which I really don't find funny...I am more into Benny Hill
Sometimes I write and it does not come across quite right!!! Ask Anne!
Anyway, regarding identification. In their wisdom, the little people who sit in their offices decide one method is the right one without experiencing the problems.
My reasons: I rehomed a dog ( whose owner no longer wanted ). He was microchipped. The owner did not have a transfer of ownership form.
Fortunately, the vet who had alerted me of the problems dog/ owner gave it to me. But they are not supposed to. I rang Identichip, transfered it and paid .
2 companies: petlog- Kennel club
and Identichip - when you have the dog passported through the vet.
One name , the owner. You must notify changes of address.
Chips can and DO move. Let's say your dog is stolen. It must be scanned. Or like me, you come across a dog you bred and recognise it. It has a chip. Not much use at that moment? but a tattoo would!
The tattoo: done at 6 weeks, painless, have not found it to fade. If so, get back to the register and talk to them.
Black or Green ink, small or large numbers. Brittanys have a unique number and each follows the last one ( from previous litter) like sheep.
I believe the Brittany to be JT....oo3, then 004 etc...
You get 3 forms, one for the Register, which is National, one for the new owner, one for you. All details of the pup are there: including name.
Parents's KC numbers , colour etc...also hip scoring.
Some say: you can cut the ear off ( like a greyhound) but how many dogs do you see going around earless.
Also, I read the chip can be cut out.
Athos's chip has wondered somewhere in his neck
I am also told that the chip is inserted between the shouder blades as there are 2 ligaments who will hold it in place.
But not in a young dog
So again, the system is poor. A bit like DEFRA. Trying to do the paperwork and form for a cow or a sheep is a nightmare
So to register my little bull calf born this morning I will ring and plead my ignorance in the hope they'll do it all for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you good people reckon your system is bizarre!!!! The government (bless its soul) introduced microchipping...but the local district councils were not ready...unless it has changed recently, my understanding is that all our chip data is held in Australia!!!!! The local council then access that database (with the mandatory bureaucratic time lapse, of course ) and hopefully one's dog is listed.
