Lungworm in dogsI heard yesterday that Harry, Chrissie & Crispin's brother (16 mths old) has been very ill and is not yet out of the woods. He is owned by my cousin and she came home a few nights ago and Harry came to greet her and was staggering. He was immediately taken to an emergency vet. After extensive tests and blood tests they have diagnosed lungworm. His symptoms were not typical ie coughing, exercise intolerance, lethargy - he had none of these. Harry is wormed regularly with Drontal which is not effective on lungworm. Several young dogs have died from lungworm in the area (Surrey) and my cousin had just heard this from a friend which was very lucky because she truly believes that had she not said to the vet "it couldn't be lungworm could it?" Harry may have died because his symptoms were not typical.

Thanks for the warning Barbara. Will check to see if Stronghold is effective against lungworm.
Wishing Harry a speedy recovery.

Milbemax is also very effective and is what my vet gives if dogs are going abroad, I have said this before about lungworm. When I was down in Wales two years ago and Ghill had to have stitches in her side the vet that we went to had a big notice up warning of lungworm. It is becoming more prevalent due to dogs going abroad or coming in from the USA. These days you need a wormer that will cover everything not just the usual tapeworm and roundworm. Don't forget that there is also heartworm as well as other nasties lurking.
I hope Harry is better soon Barbara.

Does milbemax cover heartworm as well then? I'm going round to my vet for mine this week so would like to know before I go.

I have just spoken to our vet and they said it is very rare in our area, South Herefordshire although there are hot spots around the country. They confirmed what John has said that we could use Panacur or Milbemax as a preventative.
Harry has to have four treatments of Advocate Spot on (I think one per month). After he was given the first dose he developed a haematoma on the neck which bled profusely and he had to be rushed back to the vet. The bleeding is another symptom that can develop.
Also is in Scotland - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7492135.stm

Harry is still very poorly, he was in a bad state last night and throwing himself around. They took him to the vet at 2am. He can't bear to be touched, only stroke his head, if they touch his body he cries. The vet said it is the poison coming out through the muscles etc. and should ease a bit in a couple of days. Poor Harry can't lie down as it hurts and just stands there with his eyes shut. He is on two painkillers and five other tablets. It sounds horrendous. Nobody had any sleep last night and Martin was rushing back from work tonight to take over from Marilyn and tripped over and twisted his ankle which is black and blue and swollen.
