Mugi

Mugi has fun

Tonight Mugi stood in for Freddy my welshie at my agility club.

I train with a club that uses Cheltenham Racecourse so we are not able to train for three weeks of the year as the venue is closed for the Gold Cup Meet. We have hired another venue which we run at a loss to the club and tonight I could have done with sitting in front of the fire as the hail was falling but I decided I should go. Freddy is my agility dog but he managed to scoff his and my deerhounds ration of lamb rib yesterday and has dodgy tummy, Brice the deerhound loves agility but some of the collies are too reactive and he has been bitten before so not a good combi.

Mugi was therefore the dog of choice to go. He has done a teeny bit of agiltiy but never at club level and he is now 10.5 yrs. Bless him he has fans!!!

He declined doing contact work and did his jumps at Mini Height, he feels jump one, miss one makes life more interesting. He loves tunnels and he just wagged and bustled through the evening. When I felt he had done enough he did some tricks quietly in a corner (he doesn't do quiet watching of others) and he ended up with an audience Wink .

Next week he joins the club officially as he and Freddy will be sharing a flyball class (aim to get Brittany to retrieve ball and run small obstacles with summat in his gob away from dummies) and he has a fan club already Laughing .

He is such an advert for taking on an older rehome, nothing fazes him and he is just such a character.

Very strange you posted this Sue as I was going to ask if anyone did any agility with their brits! I'm just finishing off my first phase of training goals with Tache and want to move into agility now she is older. Please keep us informed of your progress. Jenny Smile

Sue, give Mugi a big hug from his mum!

Tache, I've been attempting agility with Sherry for the past couple of years. She's now 5 and I feel we are beginning to get it together. With her the basic obedience was the hardest part, so I took her through to her Good Citizens Gold, which has helped a lot.

We train in an indoor riding school, and on bad nights she is really only interested in the rat holes round the edge of the ring. Evil or Very Mad

On good nights she is a tremendous jumper and thoroughly enjoys herself barking her head off all the way round. Laughing

We're never going to be top class - if you want that you should get a collie - and like Mugi she doesn't believe in contacts, but it is enormous fun, and we get the added bonus that she wants to work with me.

We had a little fun agility show this weekend and she actually managed to get round without getting eliminated - yippee!

Hug has been dispensed and enjoyed Wink . He is tucked up on bed at the mo with a tumy full of pilchards as he was sooooooo busy during his swimming session earlier.

Thanks Liz Very Happy We are going down the good citizens route too! Or should I say up! Tache is only 16 months old so have not started her in agility before now, and like you need to get the basic training done. I understand the strain on ligaments and hips is too much at a younger age. Do you think she is old enough, not only from a health point but also a mental approach one?? As another brit owner I'm sure you know what i mean!!!!! Laughing Jenny.

Hi Tache, I only started agility with Sherry when she was 3, but I wish I'd started earlier. We've got a really super group here, which is I think the most important thing.

A lot of the more experienced people seem to start their dogs as very young pups - no jumping at that age, just with the poles on the ground - and it gets the directional commands well into their heads which gives them a huge advantage once they start jumping for real.

Sherry has good days and bad days - when she definitely has left her brain at home, and can be quite easily distracted. Evil or Very Mad I've found, though, that working her in the obedience/agility makes her far more attentive to me. She's no angel, but certainly the most obedient Brit I've had so far.

I was worried about starting jumping, as she has a pretty high hip score, but the vet's opinion was it was better to keep her as fit and well muscled as possible. Certainly she is now in very hard condition, and has had no problem with injuries - in fact I was quite flattered when one of the trainers said she was one of the most fluid jumpers in the class.

All in all, we both find it great fun!

Wish I could find and agility group up here, I'd love to do it with Freckles. Only one close enough is on a Saturday afternoon so I'd miss a lot of them in the summer.
