Mugi needs your thoughts again pleaseLittle Moo has been to the vet this morning to see what we can do for his heart failure. After a really thorough exam his heart isn't too bad but Ken feels his issues are mainly coming from his airways. He is going to have a chest xray and bronchoscopy on friday to see if he has any strictures or masses pressing on the wrong 'bit'.
At the same time he is having a rapidly growing lump checked out on a hind leg - initially as a Fine Needle Aspiration. Ken is not happy that it is 'just' a cyst and it certainly doesn't feel like a fat lump.
I am in two minds about all this, on the one hand Mugi needs some help as his breathing at times is a mess but if it is bad news then I won't be doing anything. So I am hoping that there is something simple going on that we can treat to make him happy again.

Sorry to hear about his problems Sue. Our Chloe has a lump on one of her front legs. This is a recurrent cancer that cannot be fully removed unless her leg is amputated. This returned when she was 10 years old. We decided to take no action - the vet said about six weeks. She is still with us, and enjoying life 3.5 years later. She has several other 'lumps and bumps - vet thinks these are just fatty lumps' but we are not putting her through any more surgery so are leaving well alone unless they trouble her. These things are so unpredictable. We are keeping our fingers crossed for you.

Interestingly, Chloe was shown for a couple of years following the recurrence of the lump on her leg. Only one judge ever felt it and commented. This was an Irish judge - I will always have a great respect for her opinion as she obviously goes over the dogs thoroughly.

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed here too! Hope it's the simple explanation. Ceilidh had her leg amputated for cancer last year but was fit and well otherwise, then it was found elsewhere just under 10 months later and she became ill so was given peace. I would do nothing if it is cancer and let him enjoy what time he has left. I'll be thinking of him on Friday.

Well, despite his rythyms being ok one of his problems is most definitely his heart! These little dogs are bloomin amazing as how he has worked this last season (and been happy) astounds me.
So on chest xray his heart is pretty much double what it should be , he also has very congested lungs with possibly a few areas of concern BUT as he is so congested my vet feels it best to just consider it all as his heart. He didn't need the bronchoscopy as the reason for his symptoms was all too clear. Bear in mind he had a chest x-ray soon after I got him (so only just over 2 yrs ago) and his heart and lungs were within normal limits.
We have started a very high dose of diuretics and also Vetmedin to try to help his heart and he will be seen again in 10 days.
In addition Ken was unable to take a FNA from the lump on his leg. He got some cells but all were connective tissue and possibly abnormal. I am so lucky to have a vet who a) listens to his clients and b) has the same type of mentality as I do. So he has not charged me for the FNA, he has sent nothing for histology and we both agree that even though this rapidly emerging lump is probably not good news he doesn't need a full biopsy as at over 12.5 yrs he won't be having further management.
Thanks to everyone who has supported us these last few days, esp those that have rung me to offer advice and help. It is appreciated.

We wish you all the best Sue and that courageous old boy...
It is always so hard as those huge characters that Brittanys are, and with whom we have such strong bond, get old and sick.
I know that feeling only too well. They are indeed amazing, they keep going and don't slow down until they drop.
I think Mugi has had such an amazing and quality couple of years with you, may he enjoy his retirement...

Hopefully you will be able to keep him happy within his limitations. They are such brave little dogs. He has had such a great time with you, Sue.

Woo hoo.
Mugi has been for his review vet visit this morning and he has been given a good report.
He is still coughing a bit but nothing like as bad as he was, his abnormal beats have dropped from 1 in 8 to 1 in 40 and he is brighter in himself.
My vet wants him to continue the same drug regime for good (shame that we can't drop the diuretics but hey) and he will see him again in 4 weeks and all being well he will then just let me pop in if I have any worries. My vet is also spending a few days trying to source meds for Mugi cheaper without me going online and sourcing myself - he was looking on his computer when I was in the consulting room and cost to him to dispense (and obviously to add on his mark up) as gone up by just under 50% from Dec 2008 and Feb 2009 - he was not happy!!!!!!!!!

Glad the drugs are working well for him. Hopefully with the vet's help you will be able to source them for him cheaper.

Mugi's medsThe owner of the kennels I go to has a Rottie that costs her £180 per month in meds. She found that pet dispensary is the cheapest. Said to her vet these were the prices and if the vet could match them she would continue to use her. The vet said she couldn't even buy them at that price, so check it out on the internet. It might save you some money.

Is it safe, though? That is always my nagging concern???

Thanks Joanne I am researching meds for myself too although of course now vets are able to charge prescription charges again .
Victoria, most of the UK based online pharmacies are fine but you just need to check that they are definitely UK based and that they are sourcing decent medications.
