My worst nightmareAs I write this, I am shaking, a grown man with tears in his eyes and a stiff drink and its only 6:30..
I received the worse call of my life, Bailey had been knocked over by a car.. One of the kids had left the front door slightly open whilst chatting on the drive and Bailey decided he wanted to be a part of it.. One of the kids run across the road for what ever reason and Bailey followed so I have been told and Bailey got hit as about 40.. I was getting the car MOT's and the missus was in Sainsburies shopping...
A passer by picked Bailey up and the daughter and took them to the vet where I run all the way to see my poor baby battered and bleeding on the counter.. Severe shock, broken rear leg, possible broken pelvis to name but a few items without the xray..
Morphine and drips are in place and the initial xray shows his chest is clear and lungs are ok... They need to check everything else, but until the drip has gone through and he perks up and warms up, they want to let him chill for a while..
It's amazing how attached you become to .....
I'll leave it here for now and let you know how things go....

Thanks all for your kind words.
He pulled through the night and the vet has said his vitals have recovered and now has colour back, so the shock issue they were worried about has subsided.
He was taken out for his 1's and 2's and coped on 3 legs, so the vet thinks Bailey has gotten away with things, so he goes under today to check his rear end damage and do the repairs.. The vet has said he thnks the damge is higher up his rear leg, so probably hip or pelvis, but the xrays will confirm..
Things are certainly looking up, fingers and everything are still crossed though..
Thanks again all..

Thanks again guys/girls
Latest update,
Dislocated hip which is going back in but pops out again, so has a special sling on to twist his foot and knee and then raise it up.. They are going to teach him to walk on 3 legs for the time being
Xray showed grains on the abdomin, and an ultra sound shows pockets of blood, further checking has showed a possible tear on the liver but spleen etc seem ok.. Huge amount of bruising on the left side also.
He started to go white again whilst under, so they are going to keep him in for the weekend caged and settled to help with the recovery..
Just waiting on bloods to be checked to check liver/kidney function.
so, not out of the woods just yet, but looking better

Sending lots of positive thoughts for Bailey. Are you able to visit him? This weekend will feel like a month to you guys. They can be surprisingly agile on three legs. Josh popped a hip at about 14 months of age, he was strapped but it popped again and he had to have the hip done. He led a full life and it certainly didn't slow him down too much, especially if he got the scent of deer They are tough little dogs. Keeping everything crossed for you.
Best wishes,

We are going into tomorrow to se ehim.. His bloods came back, not great, his blood count is low for both 20-25 and it should be 50-75.. It appears that his liver took the brunt of the damage and there is another count they take which has gone of the scale.. They will now do bloods daily to see what happens.. He did raise some concerns that he may still be bleeding internal or worse still, that he has his bile duct ruptured which is not good, but that doesnt show for a few days.
Thanks all for your really kind words, I havent anything else to cross now, it's just a waiting game and like most men, I hate waiting

My vet is working at the branch that Bailey was moved too this weekend and he gave me a call this morning.
His blood count has gone upto 40 from 20 and they have now taken him off his drip for the first time..
He has eaten and drank some water, so it looks like he is on the mend.. Will be trying to get into see him today if the vet can fit us in as he has loads of emergencies today so far, but all in all good news, the little fellow is pulling through..

Vet has said Bailey is improving each day now and should be able to come home tomorrow. He doesnt think the Bile Duct is an issue as Bailey would have shown symptoms by now, so just need to keep him calm and give his Liver a chance to heal more.. I have suggested I get him tomorrow night if he is allowed home so he gets nearly another days rest as I wouldnt want any clots to start bleeding when he got home.
A couple of very expensive bottles of win and big boxes of choccies will be onthere way to the vets tomorrow I can say
Thanks again all for your kind words, always very helpful in these situations

Just how do you go about keeping a Brittany calm?
|

Vodka
Not sure, its going to be hard not to play with him, but I am going to have to in this instance.. Lots of chews I think, that keeps him occupied

Here's wishing Bailey a happy home-coming. Is the vodka for you Tim, or Bailey All my Brits have enjoyed a finger dipped in whatever wine I'm having (the Springer is more a lager lout /bitter boy ). Seriously, I think he will instinctively know his limitations. Make sure the rest of the family do too and he will be fine.
Best wishes,

Bailey looks at a glass of wine. vodka or whatever and just shy's away... Think he is nervous of the shadow/reflection... Mirrors get him going so it wouldnt surprise me..
I shall have a few tomorrow when he comes home, believe me

Well,
Good news, Bailey is home.. Went and collected him today and to say he is happy is an understatement.. Had a good moan at me when I took the pictures of him and his leg so he's his normal self He keeps forgetting he only has 3 legs and keeps trying to jump up onto his cage (where he sits) so trying to keep him down is proving interesting.
Just got to get his leg sorted now, so a few more trips back to the vet but all in all, I am one very happy bunny!
Thanks again all for you lovely comments

Well,
Bailey is doing fine, he seems to be abck to his old self, even with 3 legs and enjoying all the attention..
He's back at the vets tomorrow (Friday) to have his strapping removed to see if his leg will hold in place.. fingers crossed.
Heres a picture of him when he got home the other day (if it works)

That's a complicated looking bandage he has there He's looking bright and breezy anyway. Good luck for Friday.

It is and I cant for the life of me remember what its called
It basically holds his leg up in place by twisting the leg one way and the foot the other and then strapped to his hind..
I took Bailey out for his first walk yesterday.. A gentle walk the vet said.. This is a Brittany we are talking about.. Gets to the field and off he went, runs just as fast with 3 legs as he does 4 Much needed though.

Fantastic news Tim and Bailey - sorry, I have only just caught up with this thread..... but I am so glad to hear Bailey is on the mend!
We sometimes dont appreciate what we have until its under threat and its great to hear Bailey is perky, keen to let rip and get going.
Its awesome how something like this doesn't flatten a Brittany for long too.
Here's wishing Bailey the very best for a speedy recovery from Chris,Barry and the "Spice Girl's Downunder"!

Well I have tried halti's, harnesses, other items and now have a Canny Collar which seems to be doing the trick as regards pulling His lastest trick is humping Ghill....she don't like it and tells him off, he thinks it's a great game and runs around her then jumps her again. Blooming french males Mike thinks it's funny and I'm on the funny pills AGAIN good thing they are not addictive He keeps dissapearing into our bedroom [Merlin not Mike] and coming out with his mouth at a funny angle because he's nicked something. He never [so far] chews whatever it is but it's getting a bit nerve racking

Just another update,
Bailey went to the vets today to have his truss removed from his leg. The vet put him under and took him for an xray and unfortunately, his leg has popped out of the hip socket again He's such a brave little boy, didnt moan or whimper and let us know..
So, he is having an operation today to have his leg twisted and raised and then attached to the hip.. should be home later today and then a month of cage bound for rest and healing (he wont like that one little bit let the moaning commence)
Thanks again all for everything you have said. I read other posts where loved ones havent been so lucky and my thoughts go out to you all..
Tim & Bailey
Edited again.....
Bailey has had his op and has been very succesful. We have decided that the best place for him will be at the vets for about 10 days, so he can have as much rest as possible.. It's gonna be hard not having Bailey around, but I want to make sure he gets the best chance of this op being a complete success without any hiccups...
Roll on 10 days time

Mixed post here.....
I am sorry Bailey has needed surgery
I am really glad he has come through it well
and I am sorry he has to stay in hosp for a long stay.
Saying that my weim needed bilateral hip surgery and cos of my background I was allowed her home the same night after travelling to Swansea from Worcs for the surgery to be performed!!!!!!! It was heartbreaking to hear her cry and in reality very difficult to keep her calm and safe, I had to resort to zonking her out on sedation and carrying her outside for her business. So in many ways having him safe in hosp is probably for the best with a young, otherwise fit and lively dog.
Best wishes

Hope the hip stays in place this time. The next 10 days are going to seem like an eternity for you

I know, we missed him last night, especially when I was building the fire, as he likes to come lay by me and try and steal the kindling
At least we have time to get the Christmas decorations up and 'Bailey proofed' before he gets home

This is true, Well we got the decs all up and tree.. This is Baileys first Christmas, so he hasnt had the experience as yet as he was kenneled before and 2 young as well.. All the ballbauls are up high but I am sure the tree will be over at somepoint.. Just a feeling I have..
Thanks to everyone and their britbags, Bailey seems to be doing well..

It'll be better next year - you'll have all the fun of the fair with a Brit - teenager helping you. I have got wise to mine - a heavy cast iron base and the tree screwed into it - can't move - even an elephant won't shift it - yes, Jan I HAVE tried

Lots of love to Bailey. You must miss him so much, but the vet hospital is the best place for him to be. He will be quiet and calmer there, which is what he needs to get better.
Talking about Christmas trees etc..... many moons ago, when I had the Irish Reds, We (me & husband (at that time) two setters & sons, went south for Christmas. We left the dogs at my parents' whilst we visited the sister (just up the lane from Mum & Dad) Regular checks were made on the dogs. All was fine ... then Dad came back from checking them.. he was trying very hard to be cross but couldn't help laughing. He said , through his giggles, "You'd better get down there and sort it out, they've had the tree over, eaten the chocolate decorations, gone upstairs to your room and had your Roka biscuits and your After Eights" (the only way they could get the After Eights out of their wrappers was to squish them on the stairs )
Your boy will be fine Tim. Josh led a full and happy life after his hip problems. It took longer for me to adjust than it did him

Well, my little man is home.. he was in the vets for a week to get some rest and the nurses didnt want him to leave .. He came home and made a beeline for the tree after many NO's he settled for a little while.. he is load bearing on his leg now which is good news, but he did give a little yelp, so off to his cage.. He was great all night, didnt moan once about being in there which was nice as he always sleeps upstairs, but boy is he making up for it this morning
Anyway, his stiches come out Monday andf then a further weeks rest in his cage before some light lead work.
Thanks again all for all your kind words, it was very much appreciated

Yes, he is very happy to be home If his littloe stub could way any faster I am sure he would take off.. He hates being in his cage though as he would rather be out 'helping' us with stuff, like removing the tinsle from the tree, chewing the logs for the fire or finding out what we are having for dinner..
He started off being quite noisy lasy night in his cage until about 1:30 and I then had enough.. Came down, put his shock collar by his cage, told him to go to sleep and went to bed.. He then started barking, so 1 bleep on his collar and that was it, no more noise.. Just the sound of the collar works wonders now
He's still giving me heart attacks though when he goes out for his 1's and 2's.. Out of his cage, big stretch then runs to the garden, runs about and wants to start playing then runs back indoors.. all this time my heart is in my mouth preying he doesnt do any damage

Well, it's been a while since I have been on, what with new job just after Christmas and settling in, I h avent had much time to get on here, and other forums I frequent.
So, Bailey.. What a bundle of joy.. He progressed well over Christmas and new year getting stronger by the day. Gentle exercise (if thats what you can call it) for a good month and a steady increase. His leg has heeled wonderfully. He put on a fair bit of weight, but with the continued effort, it's turning to muscle now which in his legs, can only make it stronger.
We had him shaved from his head, all over in Jan. This was to make his hair grow the same length, and to be honest, I am glad we did. He has started to get all his feathers back now and his curly neck and ear fluff..
I know I need to get some cash off for my subs, which I hope to do shortly, I just need to find where I put the form.. It's here, but in a very very safe place that only the gremlins know about
Thanks again all, hope to meet some of you later this year, work and other stuff permitting
