New Arrival at Clos du Faisan Mark II
It is with great humility and joy that I introduce Dix (marron et blanc) from Canada. Here he is at seven months. I went to Auckland last Friday with Pauline and Jamie to get him after he had spent a month in the quarantine kennels up there. He is such an affectionate boy with a nose like a supersnoop. My utmost thanks to his breeder M. Antonio Morin for his overwhelming patience getting Dix through all the wretched protocols for this country. Bienvenue, Dix!!

Congrats, Victoria, I've always liked livers - can I be a supersnoop too and ask his parentage?

He is by Velvet II du Clos Becassier out of Ululani de Petit Odon. He has the sweetest nature and very fast which I love!! This breed never ceases to amaze me with their adaptability...for all those days in quarantine, he arrived here and was instantly 'at home'...Dionee puts him in his place when she thinks it necessary!!!
My sincerest thanks to Goldie who without, this could not have happened and also to the ladies at Pethaven Quarantine Kennels, who went out of their way to make his stay more comfortable.

Hope you have a good vacation this week.
Glad that Dix is out of jail finally....he is going to think it a bit odd having to go through winter again ! But, at least it will not be -30 there...
I know that when Lani returned home she was glad to be able to get out and do more running than she was allowed in Quebec.
All I can say is I hope he stays together and lives up to his background.
Antonio is heading into syrup season so I know he will not be checking
emails for the next couple of months, just processing and packing for now.

We arrived home early this evening after doing over 2500 kms! It was a great week, not as much fishing as we had hoped
Dionee and Dix travelled so well. We had a couple of very coldish days and some quite warm. The Autumn colours just coming into play and already looking beautiful.

Great pedigree Victoria, see you have vanity too, Crak, Vicomte, etc...lots of really good dogs. I wish you lots of luck with him.
How is Jamie's back faring? He was not too well last time I spoke to him...
Hope you all had a great time...

Thank you! With all our driving, I don't think it helped his back! But I was glad the weather was mostly kind. It has been so great talking and learning about the shooting and fishing over there...when driving down among the huge open country, Jamie would keep saying how great it would be for grouse!!!!

Who said Epagneul Breton do not like water!!! Today, I took Dionee and Dix for a walk along a local lagoon with Tony and his four.. Dix is a very strong swimmer.
Here he is looking for water rats. My thanks to Tony for taking the photographs.

Thank you, Patricia! I often think of what Antonio went through for our importation protocols...for one thing, the puppy must be nine months before it can leave so the breeder has that to contend with in the first place. Then I was worried about his hips being on concrete for a month in quarantine The poor boy, as you can imagine, still has his Canadian winter coat and we are heading for our Winter...I have no plans to show him until our Spring/Summer when his coat is sorted! Although yesterday it was so warm, if it had not been for the Autumn colours you could have forgiven for thinking it was still our Summer.
Liver and white in our climate will be something of a mission keeping the liver a good colour and to stop it fading. I am trying to work out just how I have him outdoors with me and still protect his colour for the show ring at the same time!!! We have one of the highest UF rates in the world, well, according to the experts!...arrrrggghhhh You see all the show horses fully rugged even in the Summer!

Try looking in your Horse show shops for some of their products that are used as sunscreens. Avoid the oil based or silicone (Dimethacone) based products as in the end constant use wil dry and or burn the coats.
A product we have her supposedly from OZ is called Mr. Crystal's Value Mix shampoo is a prety good grooming base that seems to conditions Livers well. Remind me later to send you a list of my grooming tools and products I use on my show dogs when competing.

Those may be all right for NZ but the Kennel Club have strict regulations in the UK. Perhaps you will need to check them out first. As Goldie uses them fro show dogs in America they may be OK, but better safe than sorry.

First off these products are "grooming" products that you or anyone even in the UK can use to do your daily care of a dog. These are products not used at a dog show.
Some would like you to believe that they use no products on their dogs but the fact is the dogs that win are taken very well care off at "home"
by proper feeding and use of good quality grooming shampoos and conditioners to preserve correct coat before ever setting foot in the show ring.
And yes this even occurs at FCI shows around the world where it is severely penalized "if" a foriegn substance is found on a dog. OF course you know the FCI rules since NZ is a FCI country albeit they follow UK trends.
Many of the top terriers from the UK have special products used on them.
Many of the top dogs who win at Cruft's have products used on them be it at the show (descretely) or at home as a prep for keeping a correct coat.
Many of these grooming "aids" were introduced to the USA from Judges and breed experts from the UK. Special grooming tools, etc. And as such have been found usefull to many different breeds.
By the way none of the products I mentioned have any colorants in them so no dye jobs are ever wanted. The "Isleof dogs"products everyone laughs about because of the name also came from the UK....great stuff for preventing sunburn in liver dogs.
PS- Glad to see that Dix's condition has improved from the poor diet in quarantine, he looks much more muscled now with the marsh workouts.
He still has a long way to go for maturity and filling out. Hope he has a good first season on birds.

Yes, of course, products are used for show preparation here too...the talcs, etc...seems to be the norm....some exhibitors stalls you walk pass there is seemingly a cloud of talc dust hanging in the air!!!!
Thank you, Goldie. Our UV down here is well known so special care will have to be made with the 'marron et blanc'!! We have a number of local shows in October through to February, plus a few further afield I wish to attend. Maybe get to a couple in the South Island as well.
Dix is doing well...we have been up the rivers, not hunting, just orientation so far...he loves the water!!! Good on the whistle.

Well, after today's effort up the river, the dogs are ready for me to walk behind them with the gun...put their bells on as if for the real thing, recall and stops really great from both of them. Very excited about getting out there with them for a hunt. Patience has certainly paid off (having two youngsters the same age!!!!) and I did not want them out hunting until they were ready! Dix is one of those who is very methodical in his work. He has a good retrieve as well. Only pheasant we saw was a young hen on my sister's driveway!!!!

Oh, goody, another liver has come south of the equator! He looks lovely.
With the colour, I got some tips from some chocolate labrador owners about food supplements and conditioners to preserve colour and reduce fading. The products probably have different names in different countries, but if you ask the NZ lab people you should be able to find the NZ versions.
My livers live outside in the Australian sun & since I have followed the chocolate lab owner's advice, there has been very little fading. I know that some people keep their livers indoors all the time to reduce fading, but I couldn't do that to my dogs - they want to be out and about, exploring, playing and having fun!

|
Thank you, Gundoglover! I will ask, there are a few chocolates shown locally...one in particular is a very handsome dog...he does o.k in the ring, too. There is also one that is trialled...I think he won the retriever at the New Zealands a couple of years ago. Fine specimen.
I agree, mine would go up the wall and over the top if kept indoors!

Orientation trip up the river...unfortunately area has been well frequented by shooters with only oldish roost sites found...
