Only really half a boastMoss and I are just back from the Kennel Club's training weekend for dogs that point.
We had a great time working the grouse moors near Masham and Grinton in North Yorkshire. The culmination of the w/e was taking the gundog working certificate, which Moss passed. Only about half the dogs entered were successful. Unfortunately, we could only take the pointer test so we didn't get to try the retrieve element. Anyway 2 good solid points and he dropped to the flush both times. Though after the first flush I cast him off in the wrong direction so we missed a second bird.
Plenty of compliments from both the judges and gun, so I'm not really too bothered that we didn't get to do the full HPR test.

Great John, Moss is a credit to you.
What a shame the KC hasn't yet managed to cater for the HPR breeds in this field. From what I can gather we have to try and organise two seperate events at which to complete the GWC. Considering the numerical number of HPR's this seems to be a labourious way of doing things.

Well done john and Moss.
I had an email conversation with the KC earlier in the year to clarify this point and they assured me it was suitable for HPRs !!!

There were a couple of people there at the W/E who were on the committee responsible for overseeing the GWC. We asked if, having completed the hunting and pointing element, we now only needed to complete the retrieve element to gain the full certificate. Unfortunately, the answer was no. We'd have to go through a full HPR certificate. If I was the suspicious type I may have thought that this was so the KC could get you to pay again for entering another event. Luckily I'm not that sort of person.
So there is a certificate for HPRs that can be taken in a single event Sue and yes Guy there is a test that's suitable for HPRs but it wasn't the one I was in. They didn't tell us that though, until we'd paid the entry fee and gone through a day's training.

Thanks Sue
I saw the spread yesterday, it came as a shock as I knew they were intending putting something in the Kennel Gazette about the day but wasn't aware that they were sending stuff to Dog world as well. The photos were taken by Paul Rawlings, who kindly sent me copies of those that Moss was involved in.

Hi John
Well done , I was out last saturday with a keeper on the moor, He was more than a bit surprised how well my little britt went compared to his setter oh and she found and pointed more birds ( I couldn't decide if he liked that bit ). What they lack in size they make up for in determination.

Thanks Patricia and Dave. I think a number of people were amazed at the way Moss dealt with the heather. Fortunately for the test it was fairly new growth but during the training on the Saturday he disappeared a few times, it was that long and thick.

Lovely photos (certainly didnt look tropical up there)!!! Neat to see a foto of my girl's uncle!! No one should ever unestimate our beloved little dogs!!!!
What altitude would that land be, John?

There was a touch of horizontal rain just as we started our run, but it didn't last long. The wind was quite strong and the dogs had scent blown in to them from a distance.
At a guess I'd say we were only at about 500 metres
