Other than gun workWould anyone like to start a training diary on disciplines other than what we normally term 'working'. For instance Agility, Obedience, Tracking

I do Working Trial style tracking (and have done a very small amount of bloodtracking) but it is not something I have done with Mugi or Chase as I want them air scenting more than ground/foot scenting (both can and do foot scent to an extent).
I would be interested on peoples thoughts as to whether a Brittany should be taught to track. BTW both blood and WT tracking being done with a specific harness and tracking line.

I think tracking is very " Germanic" and blood scenting for that type of dogs.
I had asked the question on the French Forum before and had quite a few answers...The gist of it: The Brittany will do everything from avalanche work to drugs etc..( not all of them, that is definite)as they are such a versatile breed.
But at the end of the day, they are air scenting dogs and I most defintely don't want mine with the nose on the floor, not even after fur.
So, I would say if you want to track, get a breed designed for that!!
 Just my preference ..we do obedience, and have done agility.But My daughter's bitch would stand on the A frame looking out for pigeons in the trees!

I agree, I wouldn't do tracking with mine as I prefer them to hunt but for some it is a method of letting their Brittany have SOME work. They like to have something to do and why not this. Some people just don't agree with shooting so ...................

Well, I can't quibble with those thoughts cos I got into tracking with my WSS when I couldn't let him off lead. He is very good and a very determined tracker, the deerhound should be a decent bloodtracker as that was part of what they are bred for BUT he is better as a WT tracking dog and will follow the track-layers footsteps as opposed to the blood - hey ho  .
Tracking is certainly a way of giving a dog both mental and physical exercise while not worrying about free-running.

Although not necessarily over the same distances Moss was certainly following ground scents when sent for runners on the pheasant shoot last season and he did show an interest while we were following the blood scenting at last year's HPR international tests.

I taught Ghillie to track one year when we had nothing else to do....she tracked right into a spinney where friends of hers were having a very good time till she arrived. The young man [a friend of my son-in-law] still goes bright red when Ghill bounces up to him 
It hasn't made any difference to her air scenting when out on a shoot. But there again she is soooooo good at what she does when she does it

Going back to Anne's suggestion at the start of this thread, I'll have a go at posting an Agility training diary for Sherry and Ozzy.

Great, Liz. I was hoping you would - I'm taking Freckles to obedience class just now with a view to doing agility, so will be very interested.
I think someone on here was doing the tracking certificates weren't they - can't remember who.
