poor Belle1

What a night!

Just back from the vet.  I noticed a black discharge from Belle at teatime and knew that was either a dead pup or a detached placentas so rushed her down to the vet.  options was oxytocin and let her whelp them two days early, but Michelle reckoned we had a better chance of saving the pups if we did a Caesar.  So it was all systems go.  Five pups down one horn - only one mummified pup in the other. So the trainee vet, Iain, and I set to rubbing them as they came out and putting them in the intensive care  incubator as soon as they started to breath.

I'm exhausted!   Salmon steak doesn't taste so good reheated  Rolling Eyes  Rolling Eyes

Oh boy...I hope Belle and babies are doing well.

At last, after a noisy night with not much sleep, they are quiet. My own fault, whelping box too big and they kept getting 'lost', but have sorted that.   All feeding fine and sleeping.  Belle is a wee bit 'hangdogged' after the anaesthetic and stitches up her tummy, but eating and drinking normally.

1 bob o/w dog 1 bob b/w dog, 1 bob o/w bitch, 2 tailed b/w dogs.  Three booked possibly four, one bob dog to sell.

Glad to hear Belle and babies are doing well, it must have been very scary Sad

Good to hear everything is going well.  Can't see you having any problem getting rid of a bob dog.

Haven't advertised anywhere as yet.  Still have to decide whether to keep one or not - depends how things go.

She's fine but gets too hot under the heat lamp so I have to turn it off when they could do with it most - at night when the central heating is off.
Patricia

I don't know how large your whelping box is...but, with mine, I pull it one side so the bitch is away from direct heat but not the pups. Also I have paper under the vet bed which I put on half the box.( but it is quite large with pig rails Razz )
I never switch off the lamp as keeping my pups warm is one of my thing. I hate seeing little babies like in some places in France ...where they are really wooly because they have needed to develop a coat.
Just try to raise the lamp a bit higger and on one side? I also find that with lots of paper on one side, they later mess on it rather than the bed Cool

My whelping box is 4 feet square and far too big at this stage so I have another box inside it to reduce the size. Prior to that the pups were getting lost. Laughing  Laughing  Laughing I raised the height of the lamp last night so all is well. Belle is more comfortable now.   I too use a good few layers of newspapers under the vet bed, so all in all they are quite warm enough. And I also have the bedding ion one half so they can use the newspapers to toilet on but they are not at that stage as yet.  I noticed however today that they are already moving around the box.  My friend who breeds Cockers came round today and was startled to find that an eye was partially open - surely it can't be yet - they aren't quite 5 days old yet! Everyone who has other breeds is always surprised how active baby Brittanys are, they do the " marathon" round the box very well, very fast and very early. That is in preparation for their future life...in the fast lane Wink
I have had other breeds of puppies previously, nothing as bright as the Brits. But then they are French Wink  Very Happy

No, these ones are Scottish - but there are very few Scottish mountains beginning with E so they may become multinational.   Laughing  Laughing
