rehome for puppyWe have a 6 month old orange/white dog which was picked up by Dog Warden in North Wiltshire, kept for 2 weeks and when owners contacted them, they were not willing to pay fee for having him back!
No other info at the moment, but no papers so purely a pet or non trialling work.
Being cared for in foster home at present but desperately needs new home
Contact Margaret Green on (01938) 811 717

Don't forget he could go onto the KC Agility/Obedience register to compete and can also be shown at Exemption Shows [or whatever they are called now]

how much is the fee? if a way could be found to have it met would the original owners be suitable to carry on ownership?
|
Lin Dyke
|
I expect the club has already settled things with the North Wilts dog warden and that he is with club fosterers. Is there any way his breeder could be traced to assist with re-homing or re-registering? There are very few litters registered each year.
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
There was a litter advertised in Avon which would fit, but the details are no longer on the news paper site. There again there were a few litters around that would be the same age so it's not really feasable to contact them all.

My first instinct would be that if they weren't prepared to pay the fee then perhaps they weren't that sorry the dog was gone so it wouldn't necessarily be in the dogs best interest to get him back with them.
Hope all works out, he is the same age as Chase pretty much and I vaguely remember the litter Jan eludes to but I didn't keep the details.
|
guy
|
I agree my first reaction would be like yours - but what if their circumstances dictated they could not afford the fee on top of normal monthly bills? does that make them unsuitable as owners?
The thing against them is it took them two weeks to contact a dog warden--but again they may have had reasons.
I remember when I was younger hardly being able to pay to have my vehicle released from being impounded - it had overstayed its welcome on a meter in central London. If I hadn't paid would that have made me an unfit person to own a car?
Just a thought.

No Guy and obviously I don't know the circumstances - but if pup had been unclaimed for 2 weeks and then they wouldn't pay the release fee (which I anticipate would be fairly hefty as it would be 2 weeks commercial kennelling rate plus the DW fee) it would concern me. If the dog had escaped from kennels/dog-minders etc then the 'company' would have to pay through its insurers.
I am just thinking how I would be feeling. I would be frantic if any of mine were gone for long (Freddy and his bog-off tendency is more than I can cope with sometimes and he is only gone for a few hours at a time), I would have mobilised everyone and anyone I could and certainly no Brittany's were reported on DogLost.
I appreciate that people of all circumstances make good dog owners (and conversely bad owners too) and a lack of funds does not mean you are incapable of providing for a dog.
I hope this young man gets a forever home soon.
|
guy
|
Not appearing to make any effort for two weeks stands badly against them.
Asyou say a forever home soon.
|
Lin Dyke
|
Not sure if it will help but I have just sent an e-mail to the KC asking for a list of Brittany litters registered this year. Not holding my breath for a reply, but who knows they may deliver.

2 weeks?...hmm...I hope they enjoyed their holiday: it's so much more convenient to let the dog make his own arrangements for accommodation after all...not to mention being the difference between an affordable break to the sun or not when you factor in the price of kennels.
If I am doing the 'owners' an injustice; I apologise. This unfortunately is all too common and given the timing of schools returning, holiday prices falling etc. I suspect this is a case of a dog less important than a lifestyle. I hope whoever sold the pup to these people has their tail between their legs.

I'll second that!!! Thank you, Lin and Jim for taking him on - Copper has a berautiful temperament, and deserves his lovely new home. He was really skinny so I guess he wasn't terribly well looked after.

Thank you Sue and Annie. He is a delight to have. There has been some serious stuff with the Springer but this afternoon we seem to have made a major move forward. Son Mark has a knack with animals (dogs in particular) and he did a wonderful job today, aided by myself, equipped with a "shaker-bottle" (ie: an empty plastic bottle with some gravel in.) Zac no longer wants to kill the newcomer and is much more relaxed about the whole thing, which is so much better for him aswell as Copper Rudi will still occasionally swear at him, in French, of course but I think we have cracked it enough to say a truce , if not peace, has been reached He is now micro-chipped and has a thumbs-up from the vet. Worming tablet given this evening and feeding little and often to bring his weight up. Thank you all so much for your positive comments and sound advice. Have taken lots of photos to bore you all with, will get my personal IT man to post them soon

What a happy ending to this story, I hope Lin has many happy years with copper.
I have to agree with some others too, when my beagle went missing when he was a pup I started calling every police sation and vet in Birmingham and Solihull within an hour of him going missing. I can't imagine leaving it for a day let alone 2 weeks.
But all's well now and it's nice to see the puppy is with people who obviously care about him.

Copper certainly seemed to know he was on to a good thing!
i think dogs that have had a poor start give back 110% when they are given a break. Anyway that is the result after my world survey of two.

Jan, it looks very much as though our youngsters are half brothers We have Steve Wright to thank for following up his hunch from last weekend. We have exchanged photos with the breeder and he and his wife are convinced he is one of theirs, from the same litter as Steves' Corn Dolly. Not sure what we need to do next, the breeder is prepared to help us in any way. He had already contacted the original buyer, who was "very sheepish and couldn't get off the phone quick enough". Any advice would be gratefully received.

I will ring you tonight, I have just found out that there is a sister to your boy and half sister to the Demon living just down the road from me. She is a very pretty tri-colour girl.

Here are some recent pics of Copper. Weighed him on vets scales Friday, he is now 14.95k up from 13.5k 3 weeks ago Jan , his sister looks very pretty indeed, will be interesting to see if her head colour changes.

Copper had a trip to the vet earlier this evening to complete his vaccination course. (We started again just to be sure he's fully protected.)
Really like this young vet Adrian, he liked the Britboys so much( he met Rudi & Copper together ) that he and his girlfriend (also a vet) are considering the possibility of joining our ranks Hope Cops peeing up his table didn't put him off too much Copper now weighs 16k, still a lightweight compared to his half bro' Merlin, but steady progress from 13.5k six weeks ago. We now have the necessary paperwork from the dog warden and the KC to (hopefully) get him registered to us.
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
That's brilliant, did Martin manage to sort out the KC or have you got it direct from the warden [and if so how did he/she get the paperwork?] I may see Martin and Sharon as I am going down their way next week.
Merlin is now 19.2kg and still at 50cm so I hope he will stay at that height and not grow any more. He should be OK as he was 50cm at the club show and hasn't grown since then [thank goodness]
|
Lin Dyke
|
Jan, we are going down the form 6 route to register him. We have a letter from the warden confirming our formal adoption of him, not registration papers, sorry if my post was ambiguous.
Kind regards, Lin.
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
Form6
|
Lin Dyke
|
It's a bit complicated but basically it is a "Transfer of a Registered Dog". I thought we had the wrong form to start with, as it has a section for the previous owner to sign but on the reverse of the form is a section explaining what is required if the previous owners signature cannot be obtained Hope that sums it up for you Jan.
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
No doubt it will all be made clear in the fullness of time....
|
Lin Dyke
|
Hope so Jan. Watch this space. If all goes well we'll be there in February
|
Liz
|
That sounds like the same way we got Mugi's registration sorted for Sue. We couldn't get the last owner's signature after he was returned to us, so the KC sent us a form which we had to sign to that effect.
It all went through very smoothly.
|
Lin Dyke
|
Thanks Liz, that is very encouraging. All forms filled out, covering letter written and adoption from N.Wilts dog warden confirmed. Keep your fingers/paws crossed for us
|
Lin Dyke
|
Got my credit card statement today. The KC have taken payment for my application to get Copper registered. Could this me a good sign Or maybe they take the money anyway, as they have to assess the application and charge whichever way it may go
|
Liz
|
Hopefully it means things are going through - though the KC's policy does seem to be take the money first and ask questions afterwards!
|
Lin Dyke
|
Still waiting...... but not so patiently now
|

We will keep our paws crossed here. Catja's registration papers took nearly five weeks to turn up - and then they were wrong - another week for the corrected ones to arrive.
|
Ghilliegumdrop
|
The excuse will be...they have all the Cruft's entries to process Not true, they haven't got mine yet as there was no KC stand at LKA
|

It's only been three weeks since I posted the papers. So, going by Guy's experience, we might get a response just before or just after Christmas. That would be a lovely present (providing it all goes in our favour.)

Have rung the KC. The line to the F6 registrations was busy so didn't get to speak to that dept'. The person I did talk with said that from memory, she thought they were dealing with November 11th and as my payment went thru' on 21st November I should try again in several weeks . B----- that I shall try again on Friday and hope to get thru to the F6 office
|
Ghilliegumdrop

Tell them it's urgent as you would like to enter him for Cruft's [more money for them ] and see what they say. If you do get through could I be cheeky and ask you to ask them to send me another Cruft's catalogue as I have no envelope with mine and I have to post it as Ghill is in the gamekeeper class grovel, grovel Or tell me the details and I will ring and ask for both of us

Lyn, send the KC a stroppy email. I did and with Joanne's help (she rang them and sent a copy of her letter to two departments) eventually got Belle's Endorsement lifted.
Jan, you'll get all the Crufts schedule and entry details on the FDosse Dtea link from our website - show information.

Thanks Anne, I have a schedule and have filled the form and got Ghill's bit signed BUT have no envelope because it got thrown away. I cannot enter Ghill on line because of the gamekeeper class needing a signed form .....b....KC

I have entered online for the breed classes and will be doing my paper entry for the gamekeeper classes once Simon has signed the paper. The gamekeeper entry has to go by post...don't it Seems sensible to send the lot in one envelope with a SAE for confirmation they have received it, so that is what I have done Anyway it is posted now so I cannot take it back

Lin Dyke

Without qualifying for Crufts, what classes can we enter and how do we apply I would need to have some plausible answer if I'm asked, as I'm not that good at blagging Would have to get him to walk without pulling first It must be an inherited thing Jan

You have two options to get a dog into Crufts.
Discover Dogs: Each breed has a stand with examples of dogs for the public to view and owners on hand to discuss their foibles (the dogs that is). Provide information and guidance about sourcing a puppy etc. The only thing the KC in their wisdom do not allow is the promotion of the breed clubs rescue services. Quite fun - particularly talking to Americans who are gobsmacked to see them in black :-)
BASC Gamekeeper class. This is open to all dogs, with or without pedigree (if without the dog must be registered on the activity register) The qualifying condition is the dog has to have worked on or for a shoot. There is a page in the printed application form for endorsement and signature by a gamekeeper to this end.
You cannot enter dogs as 'not for competition'
|
johnhod

I haven't got the schedule with me , but isn't there something in there for dogs with a good citizen award as well?
|
Liz

You still need to have qualified in the usual way to enter the Good Citz classes.

Many thanks for the info and link. It would be fun to do Discover Dogs.
Didn't ring the KC today as my day changed somewhat. Grandson was in a nativity play at nursery, be there for 10.30 we thought.... Beccy phoned 9.15 to say "OMG we have to be there by 10.00..7 miles to their place + 3 more to nursery.. and me in dog walking stuff and no slap on We arrived quite composed and not too late at all (10.10). Oliver did not want to dress as a shepherd, in fact he did not want to get dressed at all today (yesterday ) . He eventually put on the shepherds shirt, but there was NO WAY he was going to wear the tea towel on his head
The day got better, as I got Jim his Christmas present An air rifle, plus slip and some ammo. Someone should tip off the local squirrels, pigeons and magpies

Think I'll send a pack of Senokot to the KC Still watching letter box but suppose I'm being impatient again : Will start to hassle them soon, as I have time off next week
Copper is doing very well but we are now at the "teenager" stage. Quite serious stuff between him and Rudi, with Zac throwing in his hap'orth too. (He was castrated at age 2, due to being chryptorchid, vet Nick said it took a lot of searching to find the other one )
Zac's groomer suggested he could be sending the wrong signals due to full anal glands, which she emptied beginning of Dec'. This did not make a great difference for any length of time. Plus Rudi had an ear infection which could explain his attempts to bite Copper or anyone who got in his way
We have also reverted to the long line as Copper has taken to b-------g off when off lead We don't want to lose him and believe he doesn't want to be "lost" again but do not want to take that risk.

Have spoken to the KC this afternoon. They are currently working on paperwork received on 4th Dec' 07. As they will not have received my signed disclaimer until their return to work last week, it could still be some time before we get anywhere This is very disappointing as we were hoping to enter him in the club show next month (his only chance to enter in puppy ) We'll still be there though.
I am now going to have a cup of tea to soothe my jangled nerves, could do with a G&T but it's a bit too early, even for me
