Semen to South Africa

Hello All,

I am looking for someone to help me with an excersize of exporting some semen to South Africa. I have no idea what it entails, but I do know that we need fresh genes to carry the breed forward.

Kindly contact me should you be willing to help.

Regards,

Leon Besaans

Please can you two tell us about it and what the costs are, etc, etc, etc...who knows there may be other foreigners who may be interested in as Leon intends.

To SA it will cost;

£310 for collection
£50 for the license
£50 for something else which I have forgotten
£380 FedEx If it is collected by FedEx from the SA end rather than sent from here it may work out cheaper.

This I was told by the vet in Cambridge who specialises in this type of work. Annie reckons they may be cheaper doing it from up there.

To NZ, when I enquired two years ago it worked out at around £1500/1800 because of the rules and regulations NZ asks for before letting it into the country.

Bearing in mind that you get several doses in the one shipment....it may be worth while sharing costs with others.

Thank you very much, Jan.  Is there an age range of the dog that is best for the collection?   I guess for our protocols rabies, yardy yardy would  be required.
Ghilliegumdrop

If the dog is fertile I wouldn't think age would matter Victoria.
NZ is, I have been told, one of the most awkward countries to export anything to Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil

Yes, our importation protocols are frightful which is why we do not have rabies and some of the other ghastly lurgies that lurk in other countries!!!!!!    It is a shame that our protocols are so fierce in some ways because it does deter people from importing.   At least nowadays our quarantine period for dogs and cats has gone from six to one month...my sister is importing a Bergamasco from Italy so I am learning all this (not from England and Ireland where the dogs can come straight home from the airport!!!!).  The cost of the quarantine equals more than the freight and part of the protocols in respect of  Italy is that the dog cannot leave there until 9 months old, so you are paying for seven months keep as well as the puppy price, freight and quarantine here...to say that it adds up is an understatement!!!

Victoria...it is as expensive doing it into the UK. 7 months passport ( boarding) that can be from 3 to 5 plus Euros per day plus, vaccines, blood test, microchip etc...that adds up way more than the dog itself.
Worth every penny to have the right bloodlines to add to one's gene pool...I know Jamie went through a lot of tests and patience etc...to export to New Zealand. Not everyone would have done it. And the buyer to have paid it too...
Importing is hugely expensive...But it makes you keen to bring in such and such line because they are such great dogs in France, they can be high on the scale of values, they have valuable assets etc...And you want some of that.
When I bought Ivry, I only meant to buy one...but because she was in whelp to Ebert, we just had to buy one of her pups too. Best thing we did.
As you say, it does not come cheap Rolling Eyes

Yes, there is no doubt at all that we HAVE to import, not for any personal reasons as such but FOR THE BREED.  Expensive or not, it must be done...at least, in the UK, you are much closer to the Source...and can travel to see your puppy without tooooo much trouble.   Just to get to Paris is over 20 odd hours flying time....aaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!   Worth every minute, mind you!!!!!!!!!!!!
