Mugi

Silly

Today Mugi proved once again what a nice dog he is.

I decided a few weeks ago to train my screwed up welshie to KCGC Silver level (we will never reach gold cos of the out of sight stay) which may sound a low goal but Freddy has issues and it took 2 years to achieve a 1 minute down stay at 5 paces!!!!

As the day was sunny class was moved from my safe hall venue to a playing field Crying or Very sad , Freddy cannot be trusted on a field with access to an A road, especially while his mum has her arm in a plaster cast so Mugi entered class. The class combines silver and gold standard dogs and my boy will still not down on command let alone have a bronze KCGC certificate.

Who was the only dog who would walk to heel off lead? Recall away from teenagers with food? He also was the only dog who stood on command!!

All the exercises he couldn't do (or rather we hadn't tried before) like 'Go to Bed' he attempted and acquitted himself ok if not well. For a dog pushing 10 and 3/4 he proves the old adage wrong. You most certainly can teach an old dog new tricks if you are fair and reward appropriately.

Funniest part was the retrieve, the dogs were all picking up obedience dummies but I declined that and used the bunny dummy - Mugi picked it and carried it back ish to me (as far as we have got with the exercise) and all the other dogs wanted his retrieve article!!

Just goes to show......you cannot keep a good dog down!
Brilliant, good for you Mugi.

Well done Mugi - you'll need to get him through the Bronze (Brittany Club Weekend, if not before), and then you can put him in the Silver/Gold class in his own right. Laughing

Liz - Is there any way can we get dogs through the next stage of the GC if they perhaps don't have the opportunity on their home areas. Many people do their own training without going to a training class.
Is the test separate from and independent of training classes and could someone therefore test dogs in October? If so what qualificaions does the tester need.

My understanding of the KCGC Regs is that the Bronze was the only level that could be tested "on the day", the Silver and Gold both being supposed to be class based, with a test at the end of the course. They have just brought out a new set of Guidelines which I got the other week, but haven't had time to read through yet.

The qualifications for a tester are the same - dog show judge, police dog handler, dog warden, etc, so that would not be a problem.

For our weekend, the biggest problem would be time. There is so much going on that it's hard to find a time slot, and certainly last year some people - including Guy - missed out as we couldn't get a suitable time for them.

Yes in the event a regret - as it was Barley's little chance to prove he did listen.
